  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Stars Beneath Us written by Paul Wallace and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ways both confident and gentle, Stars Beneath Us brilliantly shows God’s presence in the ever-evolving cosmos. Relying on his upbringing as a Baptist, his doctoral work in experimental nuclear physics and gamma-ray astronomy, and his ordination to the gospel ministry in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Paul Wallace weaves a book unlike any other in faith and science literature. Instead of engaging the debates of natural theology or proofs for the existence of God, this is a call to courage for those who fear a true encounter with the cosmos will distance them from God. With a winsome mix of compelling personal narrative and insightful biblical analysis, the author calls into perspective the scale of the cosmos and our place within it. Relying on a theology of openness to the world, Stars Beneath Us will inspire readers to engage with the natural world in new ways and find God, as it turns out, everywhere.

Book The Love Songs of a Lonely Man

Download or read book The Love Songs of a Lonely Man written by Richard Paul Haight and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Love Songs of a Lonely Man is a selection of poems wtitten over a twenty year span, but 80 ercent or more are recent. Some of the "love songs" are conventional, at least in the sence of wooing and heart palpitations, the blues, and evanescence. That the conventional themes are given unconventional treatment is suggested by the titles of some of the poems: "The Love Song of an Inadequate Man," "Advice to a Sophomore Co-ed Who's suffering From Acute Horniness," "Forgive Me, Wife." However, most of the poems are love songs in the broader sense of passionate engagement with the world and with life at this time, under these circumstances. The author has had varied experiences as a laborer, medical lab tech, radio-TV anouncer and sportscaster, university professor, principal in large-scale grant projects, officer in a funding agency, mountain route newspaper carrier, and many other ups and downs. The perspectives in his poems, accordingly, are many, ranging from those of a bag lady to those of the "Sibyl on the Rhine," from those of a student who has shot fellow students to those of a grumpy old man who can't sleep and is discussing sex in his imagination with "famous dead men" - Picasso, Goethe, Hesse. The poems themselves are in several styles and forms, but all are "accessible." Some are sololoquies in voices as varied as those of Hildegard von Bingen, oedipus, a Death Mother, a Latino bead artsist, and a Union (Civil War) soldier. the poems demonstrate a flair for psychological insight, storytelling, and powerful imagery. speaking in his own voice the author is always passionate, is often cranky, sometimes has a twinkle in his eye. One motif is american culture in such poems as "The Bellringers of Palm Springs," "Of Meadows and Parking Lots," "The 600 Block of Elm Between Pleasant and Arcadia," and several others. A second major motif is religion; the author's perspective is revealed in "Sin Is" and is elaborated in "Osiris and Medea," "Oedipus Instructs the Tribes of Isreal," "Hildegard Confesses to Febrile and Apasionata," and others. Still a third major motif is simplistic morality and moral evil, found in "How Am I Different," "Errors of Love," "Are Women the Cause of Men?" "Dearest Lucinda," and others. And a fourth motif is art and artists, in such poems as "You Can't See a Tabula Rasa Until It Disappears," "How a Poet May Self-Aggrandize," and "The poet of Beads." A feature of the collection is a group of poems culled from a once large group based on dreams women share with the author. Over time those inlcuded in Love Songs have become "more poem that dream." the poems are unambiguously feminine in detals, imagry, and themes. "Encounter With the Turban and His Beast" is unambiguously humorous and has an odd resonance with the events of 9/11. "I Hold Pain in My Arms" is based on a dream following an abortion. And "Dona Nobis Pacem" is a vivid women-on-the-verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown dream-poem. Though it is not an emphasis of this collection of poems, some autobiographical details leach out. The unpleasant details are fiction and the pleasant details are lies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Augustino said quietly. Be careful with that blade Robert. You might cut yourself! San Augustino was rewarded with Robert shouting a fearful battle cry and charging with his saber held high in an anticipated downward thrust! Gasps of horror could be heard at the display of the ungentlemanly like conduct! Robert on the other hand, was beginning to become disheartened with what he thought was going to be an easy victory with his surprise attack. He was mentally out of balance because his saber had only cut air and hit the ground! Worse was the sudden realization that he had complexly missed San Augustino and was now lying with his face in the mud! Robert immediately jumped up screaming in frustrated anger aided by the feeling of the pain of an imaginary saber blade in his back! Robert knew in his heart that he would have taken advantage of the situation, if the tables had been turned and Augustino had been the one sliding on his face. Robert neednt have feared, because San Augustino was still standing perfectly poised about ten feet away almost in the same position that he had been standing when Robert had originally charged! It was almost as if San Augustino had not moved! Robert suddenly felt a stinging sensation on his chest and looking down was horrified to see a thin red streak that was starting to spread his across his white shirt! It was the thinnest of cuts and although not very wide looked painfully deep and more importantly, was rapidly bleeding his strength away!

Book excerpt: What if our pain was the most beautiful thing about us? From best-selling and award-winning author Kevin Brockmeier: a new novel of stunning artistry and imagination about the wounds we bear and the light that radiates from us all. At 8:17 on a Friday night, the Illumination commences. Every wound begins to shine, every bruise to glow and shimmer. And in the aftermath of a fatal car accident, a private journal of love notes, written by a husband to his wife, passes into the keeping of a hospital patient and from there through the hands of five other suffering people, touching each of them uniquely. I love the soft blue veins on your wrist. I love your lopsided smile. I love watching TV and shelling sunflower seeds with you. The six recipients—a data analyst, a photojournalist, a schoolchild, a missionary, a writer, and a street vendor—inhabit an acutely observed, beautifully familiar yet particularly strange universe, as only Kevin Brockmeier could imagine it: a world in which human pain is expressed as illumination, so that one’s wounds glitter, fluoresce, and blaze with light. As we follow the journey of the book from stranger to stranger, we come to understand how intricately and brilliantly they are connected, in all their human injury and experience.

Book Beneath the Broom Tree

Download or read book Beneath the Broom Tree written by Jill Penrod and published by Jill Penrod. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Ninian’s Sanctuary is a spiritual retreat center on a mysterious island so far south it’s nearly in Antarctica. At this center guests find healing, hope, and renewal, or so says its website. Ione Stavros needs it to be true, because she needs healed. Memories of horror haunt her, and she’s desperate to hear God again and regain her life. Soon after she arrives she meets Callen McGill, who is clearly as haunted as she is. Through an unspoken agreement, they don’t share their pain, but they share adventures, sometimes dangerous adventures, digging more deeply into the island’s secrets. God begins to knit Ione’s wounds, but Callen falls farther into darkness, and he doesn’t understand why God won’t heal him. If God is dealing with them together—and it seems that’s what He means to do—surely He will heal both of them. At least Callen hopes so, because this isn’t simply about healing their spirits. It’s also about rebuilding their lives, and Callen needs a job, a home, and mostly a way to keep Ione in his everyday life, whatever that will look like. It isn’t until God puts everything in Callen’s life to the test that he realizes God’s paths might lead to places he never expected to go. Small-town Christian contemporary romance with an island twist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting trip below the surface of Michigan's rocks and fossils. Most people recognize Michigan by its mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula and the Great Lakes embracing the state. Underneath the earth's surface, however, is equally distinctive evidence of an exciting history. Michigan rests on sedimentary rocks that reach down into the earth's crust more than fourteen thousand feet--a depth three-and-a-half times deeper than the Grand Canyon. Within these layers of rock rest all sorts of ancient fossils and minerals that date back to the eras when tropical seas spread across Michigan and hot volcanoes flung molten rock into its skies--long before mile-thick glaciers bulldozed over Michigan and plowed through ancient river valleys to form the Great Lakes. Under Michigan is the first book for young readers about the geologic history of the state and the structure scientists call the Michigan Basin. A fun and educational journey, Under Michigan explores Earth's geological past, taking readers far below the familiar sights of Michigan and nearby places to explain the creation of minerals and fossils and show where they can be found in the varying layers of rock. Readers will learn about the hard rock formations surrounding Michigan and also discover the tall mountain ridges hidden at the bottom of the Great Lakes. With beautiful illustrations by author Charles Ferguson Barker, a glossary of scientific terms, and charming page to keep field notes, Under Michigan is a wonderful resource for young explorers to use at home, in school, or on a trip across Michigan.
