Book Bellamy and the Brute

Download or read book Bellamy and the Brute written by Alicia Michaels and published by Clean Teen Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh twist on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast, Bellamy and the Brute proves true love really is blind. When Bellamy McGuire is offered a summer job babysitting for the wealthy Baldwin family, she's reluctant to accept. After all, everyone in town knows about the mysterious happenings at the mansion on the hill—including the sudden disappearance of the Baldwin's eldest son, Tate. The former football star and golden boy of Wellhollow Springs became a hermit at the age of sixteen, and no one has seen or heard from him since. Rumors abound as to why, with whisperings about a strange illness—one that causes deformity and turned him into a real-life monster. Bellamy wants to dismiss these rumors as gossip, but when she's told that if she takes the job, she must promise to never, ever visit the third floor of the mansion, she begins to wonder if there really is some dark truth hidden there. Tate's condition may not be the only secret being kept at Baldwin House. There are gaps in the family's financial history that don't add up, and surprising connections with unscrupulous characters. At night there are strange noises, unexplained cold drafts, and the electricity cuts out. And then there are the rose petals on the staircase. The rose petals that no one but Bellamy seems to be able to see. The rose petals that form a trail leading right up to the 3 rd floor, past the portrait of a handsome young man, and down a dark hallway where she promised she would never, ever go… As Bellamy works to unravel the mysteries of Baldwin House and uncover the truth about Tate, she realizes that she is in way over her head… in more ways than one. Can her bravery and determination help to right the wrongs of the past and free the young man whose story has captured her heart? Book Law and Providence in Joseph Bellamy s New England

Download or read book Law and Providence in Joseph Bellamy s New England written by Mark Valeri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-10-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of religious thought and social life in early America focuses on the career of Joseph Bellamy (1719-1790), a Connecticut Calvinist minister noted chiefly for his role in originating the New Divinity--the influential theological movement that evolved from the writings of Bellamy's teacher, Jonathan Edwards. Tracing Bellamy's contributions as a preacher, noted controversialist, and church leader from the Great Awakening to the American Revolution, Mark Valeri explores why the New Divinity was so immensely popular. Set in social contexts such as the emergent market economy, the war against France, and the politics of rebellion, Valeri shows, Bellamy's story reveals much about the relationship between religion and public issues in colonial New England.

The story opens by introducing us to Derek Cabell, who was glaring around at the ramshackle buildings of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. Book excerpt: Edward Bellamy's 'The Collected Works of Edward Bellamy' is a comprehensive collection of the author's most renowned works including 'Looking Backward: 2000-1887'. Bellamy's literary style is characterized by his socialistic utopian visions that serve as a critique of the industrial society of the late 19th century. Through his writing, Bellamy explores themes of equality, social justice, and the potential for societal transformation. His imaginative narratives offer readers a glimpse into a world where class divisions are eradicated and human progress is prioritized above all else. Edward Bellamy, a prominent American author and socialist thinker, was heavily influenced by the social and economic disparities of his time. His experiences as a journalist covering labor strikes and witnessing the struggles of the working class informed his writing and his passionate advocacy for social reform. Bellamy's works continue to be studied and revered for their insightful commentary on the pressing issues of his era. 'The Collected Works of Edward Bellamy' is a must-read for those interested in exploring alternative visions for society and reflecting on the enduring relevance of Bellamy's ideas in the contemporary world. This anthology offers readers a comprehensive look at the visionary works of an author whose influence extends far beyond his own time.

Book The Vast and Terrible Drama

Download or read book The Vast and Terrible Drama written by Eric Carl Link and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad treatment of the cultural, social, political, and literary under-pinnings of an entire period and movement in American letters The Vast and Terrible Drama is a critical study of the context in which authors such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Theodore Dreiser, and Jack London created their most significant work. In 1896 Frank Norris wrote: "Terrible things must happen to the characters of the naturalistic tale. They must be twisted from the ordinary . . . and flung into the throes of a vast and terrible drama." There could be "no teacup tragedies here." This volume broadens our understanding of literary naturalism as a response to these and other aesthetic concerns of the 19th century. Themes addressed include the traditionally close connection between French naturalism and American literary naturalism; relationships between the movement and the romance tradition in American literature, as well as with utopian fictions of the 19th century; narrative strategies employed by the key writers; the dominant naturalist theme of determinism; and textual readings that provide broad examples of the role of the reader. By examining these and other aspects of American literary naturalism, Link counters a century of criticism that has perhaps viewed literary naturalism too narrowly, as a subset of realism, bound by the conventions of realistic narration.

Book excerpt: Named after a trip to see South Pacific, the Bali Hotel stands not in the South Seas but in a remote corner of Southern England. Reluctantly owned by Martin Lomax, the Bali has a bar that provides refuge to residents and a group of eccentric locals including the sharp-tongued, gin-swilling Mrs Stapleton and her verbal sparring partner Adam. One fateful day, however, the mirth and merriment of the Bali is clouded by the arrival of a spectre from Martin's past. His name is Edwin Catchpole and to say that he is a vicious brute would be flattery. To Martin, the opportunity to even the score is far too tempting to resist... "Zany, with snappy dialogue and nice throw-away lines, the story carries a genuine sense of lonely tragedy beneath the chuckles." Sunday Express "Crackles with aphorisms....a powerful novel." Daily Express "High comedy...high entertainment." New Yorker
