"Goodness no, there are a lot of numbers bigger than one hundred,” Mrs. Tramm explained, “and we will be in school for many more days after the hundredth day.” But then, on February 21, 2020, the 100th day of school, COVID-19 changed everything. From empty classrooms to kindergarten in the kitchen, teachers, parents, and students navigated uncharted waters as their world locked down in the epicenter of the Italian outbreak. For the next 100 days, residents of Vicenza learned to find joy in simplicity, country living, and community. In diary form, 100 Days Smart highlights their resilience, recognizing and remembering the fears and frustrations, humor and humanity of shared experiences on a new path forward.

Technology-Mediated Learning Environments for Young English-Language Learners is targeted to researchers, educators, and policymakers in the areas of elementary education, after-school learning, second-language teaching and learning, English language and literacy development, and reading.

Download or read book Learning from Picturebooks written by Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picturebooks, understood as a series of meaningful text-picture relations, are increasingly acknowledged as an autonomous sub-genre of children’s literature. Being highly complex aesthetic products, their use is deeply embedded in specific situations of joint attention between a caregiver and a child. This volume focuses on the question of what children may learn from looking at picturebooks, whether printed in a book format, created in a digital format, or self-produced by educationalists and researchers. Interest in the relationship between cognitive processes and children’s literature is growing rapidly, and in this book, theoretical frameworks such as cognitive linguistics, cognitive narratology, cognitive poetics, and cognitive psychology, have been applied to the analysis of children’s literature. Chapters gather empirical research from the fields of literary studies, linguistics and cognitive psychology together for the first time to build a cohesive understanding of how picturebooks assist learning and development. International contributions explore: language acquisition the child’s cognitive development emotional development literary acquisition ("literary literacy") visual literacy. Divided into three parts considering symbol-based learning, co-constructed learning, and learning language skills, this cross-disciplinary volume will appeal to researchers, students and professionals engaged in children’s literature and literacy studies, as well as those from the fields of cognitive and developmental psychology, linguistics, and education.

Download or read book Expressing the Shape and Colour of Personality written by Thérèse Mei-Yau Woodcock and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the distillation of the author's 35 years' experience of using Lowenfeld Mosaics and Lowenfeld practice in the treatment of unhappy and disturbed children, in the investigation of children' acculturation to alien cultures, and in working with the deaf. Through case studies, 80 colour mosaics made by children and adults are used to illuminate Lowenfeld's theories. Mosaics are one of several non-verbal techniques invented by Lowenfeld to enable children to express their thoughts and feelings directly without having to find words. The circumvention of language attracted Mosaics to the notice of social anthropologists, such as Margaret Mead, looking for tools for cross-cultural research. The author gives a detailed account of how to set about using Mosaics in a clinical setting, how to introduce them to a young person, and how to discuss the resultant creation. The wide range of case studies presented includes the use of Mosaics to study the degree of comparative acculturation of samples of 12-year old Chinese children, in mainland China, London, and San Francisco. Th r se Woodcock has taught the use of Mosaics to a wide range of professionals who work with children - child psychotherapists and psychiatrists, paediatric social workers, paediatric occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, play therapists, guardians, specialist nurses, workers with the deaf, among others. Expressing the Shape and Colour of Personality offers an opportunity to anyone working professionally with children or young people to benefit from her unrivalled experience.
