Bella Burton is in town to help her aging grandfather—and to take a break from her flailing singing career. Download or read book Genre Reception and Adaptation in the Twilight Series written by Anne Morey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the criticism on Stephenie Meyer's immensely popular 'Twilight' novels has underrated or even disparaged the books while belittling the questionable taste of an audience that many believe is being inculcated with anti-feminist values. Avoiding a repetition of such reductive critiques of the series's purported shortcomings with respect to literary merit and political correctness, this volume adopts a cultural studies framework to explore the range of scholarly concerns awakened by the 'Twilight novels and their filmic adaptations. Contributors examine 'Twilight's debts to its predecessors in young adult, vampire, and romance literature; the problems of cinematic adaptation; issues in fan and critical reception in the United States and Korea; and the relationship between the series and contemporary conceptualizations of feminism, particularly girl culture. Placing the series within a broad tradition of literary history, reception studies, and filmic adaptation, the collection offers scholars the opportunity to engage with the books' importance for studies of popular culture, gender, and young adult literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the days of Teutonic rulers... barons, dukes and counts of Prussian royal lineage, the ambitious coachman, Johann Kutsche, had struck a deal with Baron von Keidel. In 1862 the secret agreement had been designed to fulfill the needs of both the royal patriarchy and the working class family. This deal with the devil would allow the Kutsches to break free from their rigid social structure. Heinrich, the coachman’s son, was to be the primary benefactor of his father’s actions. Raised and educated alongside the young baron, Max von Keidel, Heinrich had come to believe that his privileged life would last forever. Upon tragedy, war and scandal, Heinrich’s conflicted world had collapsed in disillusionment. Tormented by this darkness, he took a new path in life... to the New World and into the arms of his loving wife, Emma. Living within two worlds, "Henry" was caught between the rich and the poor, never knowing where he truly belonged. His demons would come to haunt all those who had crossed his path, including his loving wife and their six children. Struggling to survive horrendous living conditions in the tenements of New York City, Henry’s sons and daughters would rise above all obstacles to find the way to redemption. His beautiful daughter, Bella, would be the link between the past and the present, as she faced difficult decisions of her own.

Download or read book In the Twilight of Patriarchal Culture The Struggle for Female Identity in Stephenie Meyer s Twilight Saga written by Astrid Ernst and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates Meyer's popular Twilight saga from a feminist point of view, focusing on the development of Bella's character and her quest for identity in a rigidly patriarchal world. Bella's life is entirely determined by the two central male characters who form a polarized axis which slowly tears her apart. Bella's low self-esteem and her strong attachment to the over-idealized Edward Cullen are read as symptoms of her placelessness in a world that does not grant her space to develop as an autonomous subject. Bella's wish to become a vampire can be equalled with a woman's desire to gain access to a higher social realm via her husband and thereby escape her marginalisation in patriarchal culture. In order to live eternally in the idealized, capitalist, patriarchal and overly religious world that Edward represents, Bella has to make a series of sacrifices. Leaving her mother behind, she moves into a male dominated world which is divided into morally idealized vampires and racially devalued werewolves. She is forced to give up her friendship with Jacob Black, who represents her autonomous self, in order to find her patriarchal pre-defined destiny as mother and wife. Similar patterns of stereotypical representations of femininity can be found in various characters of the saga. A more controversial note is brought in by Bella's half-vampire child who can be seen as a destabilizing factor of the saga's rigid dichotomy. Taking all this into consideration, we have to ask whether it is desirable that millions of young women worldwide admire Bella and set her up as their role model.

Download or read book The Woman Fantastic in Contemporary American Media Culture written by Elyce Rae Helford and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Marleen S. Barr, Shiloh Carroll, Sarah Gray, Elyce Rae Helford, Michael R. Howard II, Ewan Kirkland, Nicola Mann, Megan McDonough, Alex Naylor, Rhonda Nicol, Joan Ormrod, J. Richard Stevens, Tosha Taylor, Katherine A. Wagner, and Rhonda V. Wilcox Although the last three decades have offered a growing body of scholarship on images of fantastic women in popular culture, these studies either tend to focus on one particular variety of fantastic female (the action or sci-fi heroine), or on her role in a specific genre (villain, hero, temptress). This edited collection strives to define the "Woman Fantastic" more fully. The Woman Fantastic may appear in speculative or realist settings, but her presence is always recognizable. Through futuristic contexts, fantasy worlds, alternate histories, or the display of superpowers, these insuperable women challenge the laws of physics, chemistry, and/or biology. In chapters devoted to certain television programs, adult and young adult literature, and comics, contributors discuss feminist negotiation of today's economic and social realities. Senior scholars and rising academic stars offer compelling analyses of fantastic women from Wonder Woman and She-Hulk to Talia Al Ghul and Martha Washington; from Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series to Cinda Williams Chima's The Seven Realms series; and from Battlestar Gallactica's female Starbuck to Game of Thrones's Sansa and even Elaine Barrish Hammond of USA's Political Animals. This volume furnishes an important contribution to ongoing discussions of gender and feminism in popular culture.
