In Divine Games, Steven Brams analyzes games that a human being might play with an omnipotent and omniscient godlike being. Drawing on game theory and his own theory of moves, Brams combines the analysis of thorny theological questions, suggested by Pascal's wager (which considers the rewards and penalties associated with belief or nonbelief in God) and Newcomb's problem (in which a godlike being has near omniscience) with the analysis of several stories from the Hebrew Bible. Almost all of these stories involve conflict between God or a surrogate and a human player; their representation as games raises fundamental questions about God's superiority. In some games God appears vulnerable (after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit in defiance of His command), in other games his actions seem morally dubious (when He subjects Abraham and Job to extreme tests of their faith), and in still other games He has a propensity to hold grudges (in preventing Moses from entering the Promised Land and in undermining the kingship of Saul). If the behavior of a superior being is indistinguishable from that of an ordinary human being, his existence would appear undecidable, or inherently unknowable. Consequently, Brams argues that keeping an open mind about the existence of a superior being is an appropriate theological stance.

Running from your fears and chasing your dreams are two totally different entities. One has you as the runner and the other as the chaser, and we all know that it is better to be the hunter than the game. Running from your fears is what you are most likely to do when you lack trust in God and confidence in yourself. God doesnt reward us for running away from our fears but for pursuing our dreams. When you have trust and confidence, you are more subject to pursue your dreams. Knowing this is the reason I wrote this book especially for the young men on the corner selling drugs and deceived by the myths of the game. I firmly believe that if they can just be made to believe that God is on their side and that they have greater gifts and talents within them than they show by standing on the corner selling drugs and committing other crimes that they will prove all their detractors wrongthose who say they are hopeless and worthless. It goes without saying that when we know better, we do better. At the same time, it has to be said that the Dough Boys likely know better and that they can do better than they know, if they simply apply themselves to doing the simple thing of just trusting God and having self-confidence. So this is a book written for anyone who has yet to experience the blessing of being able to pursue their dreams without the fear of not being able to make it unless they give into the status quo: do what they consider as the only game in town for people like them, with three strikes against them, namely, being young, having no wisdom (strike one), being black, having no vision (strike two), and being unskilled and having no fortitude (strike three). It is meant to make you aware of the fact that there is more to life than what you can gain by running with the crowd and among those miserable pessimists who believe that the streets are the only life available to them. Know this one thing: if you dont open this book and only read the back cover, the greatest success is had by those who have a God that not only blesses them with the desires of their heart but also gives them a heart of faith and spirit of courage. Dough boys, man up and put your trust in God!
