There are in Europe a rich amount of Fairy tales which made the fame of renowned collectors such as the Grimm brothers or Hans Christian Andersen. But for some country, few is actually known about the variety of their Fairy Tales outside their borders. The following list is a selection of the best Fairy Tales or pieces of literature for children collected in every European country. Folklore of the Low Countries, often just referred to as Dutch folklore, includes the epics, legends, fairy tales and oral traditions of the people of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. Traditionally this folklore is written or spoken in Dutch. Some of the Pre-Christian Dutch mythology took less sacred forms in the Middle Ages folklore and fairy tales, for example tales of the witte wieven, elf and kabouter continued, combining Christian and fairy tale elements. The mythology of Wodan on the Wild Hunt sailing through the sky, is thought to have been one of the tales that changed into tales of Christian Sinterklaas traveling the sky.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboulaye's Fairy Book: Fairy Tales of All Nations Pro/mpted in part by the desire to please a certain Prince Charming of my acquaintance, I have amused the leisure of an arduous undertaking by collecting the exquisite tales which M. Laboulaye has been in the habit for some years past of scattering through various books and journals, and which can not fail to delight both young and old by their sparkling wit and richness of fancy. The brilliant author of Paris in America needs no introduction to American read ers. One of the first humorists, as well as one of the first ju dicial writers of France, it is his favorite recreation to amuse children with tales wherein the grotesque veils a keen and subtle satire rarely equaled. The style is inimitable, and the fancies are not surpassed even by those of the famed Hans Christian Andersen. Book Russian Legends Folk Tales and Fairy Tales

Download or read book Russian Legends Folk Tales and Fairy Tales written by Patty Wageman and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Legends, folk tales and fairy tales all had a profound impact on Russian painting of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Russian artists who dealt with these subjects chose sometimes to paint large canvases in which the greatness and grandeur of the Russian countryside fuses with the magical world of the imagination. The paintings of Viktor Vasnetsov, Nikolai Roerikh, and Mikhail Vrubel, the illustrations of Ivan Bilibin and Elena Polenova, and the works of Vasily Kandinsky register most impressively the worlds of fantasy and the imagination." "This book presents more than 90 illustrations of these fascinating works, while the essays shed interesting light on how these stories contributed to and influenced the visual arts. The book also contains summaries of the fairy tales depicted in these paintings, whereby the reader is given an overview of the major Russian folk tales."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Tales of magic tales in print

Download or read book Tales of magic tales in print written by Willem De Blecourt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineteenth century folklorists, and the general public in their wake, have assumed the orality of fairy tales. Only lately have more and more specialists been arguing in favour of at least an interdependence between oral and printed distribution of stories. This book takes an extreme position in that debate: as far as Tales of magic is concerned, the initial transmission proceded exclusively through prints. From a historical perspective, this is the only viable approach; the opposite assumption of a vast unrecorded and thus inaccessible reservoir of oral stories, presents a horror vacui. Only in the course of the nineteenth century, when folklorists started collecting in the field and asked their informants for fairy tales, was this particular genre incorporated into a then feeble oral tradition. Even then story tellers regularly reverted to printed texts. Every recorded fairy tale can be shown to be dependent on previous publications, or to be a new composition, constructed on the basis of fragments of stories already in existence. Tales of magic, tales in print traces the textual history of a number of fairy tale clusters, linking the findings of literary historians on the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries to the material collected by nineteenth- and twentieth-century field workers. While it places fairy tales as a genre firmly in a European context, it also follows particular stories in their dispersion over the rest of the world.

Book FOLK TALES OF FANTASTIC BEASTS AND MEN 24 Illustrated Folk and Fairy Tales

Download or read book FOLK TALES OF FANTASTIC BEASTS AND MEN 24 Illustrated Folk and Fairy Tales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-01-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rather poignant that this collection of Folk and Fairy Tales from the Flanders region of Belgium was published in 1918, for in the closing stage of the Great War I don’t think there were many, soldiers and civilians living in Flanders, who in 1918 had the fantasy world of folk and fairy tales foremost in mind. Herein are 24 well illustrated tales from the Flanders region of Belgium illustrated by Jean De Bosschère. Also included are 12 full page colour plates plus 106 pen and ink illustrations. To make the volume even more sumptuous, each story has an individually illustrated drop capital. Some of the stories in this superb volume are: Ups And Downs The Three Monkeys How The Goldfinch Got His Colours The Cock And The Fox Sponsken And The Giant The Choristers Of St. Gudule The Magic Cap Sugar-Candy House Poor Peter The Peasant And His Ass The Reward Of The World and many more. So we invite you to download this volume, settle back with a steaming hot toddy, and be prepared to be entertained by this most enjoyable volume from yesteryear. 10% of the net profit will be donated to charities. REVIEWS from 1918: “This handsome and well-illustrated book is one of the most attractive we have seen this season. It gives us renderings of the popular fables and legends current in Flanders and Brabant which have a colour and quaintness of their own, yet combines adventures with an unobtrusive and so more effective moral.”—Saturday Review. “There are delightful stories; even more attractive than the letterpress are M. de Bosschère’s illustrations. Conceived with inexhaustible fancy, full of quaint detail, and set down with a fascinating naïveté they embody the characters and scenes of the tales with a fullness of particularism that should provide endless entertainment to youthful readers. They are the best and most complete series of designs yet produced by the artist.”—Connoisseur. “The illustrations by Jean de Bosschère are of a droll fancy. The artist has a notable power of the grotesque, and both in colour and black and white he uses it.”—Daily Telegraph.
