Download or read book Bela Lugosi in Person hardback written by Bill Kaffenberger and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest in a series of books by researchers extraordinaire Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger, Bela Lugosi in Person brims with new facts, figures, and never-seen photos documenting the actor's scores of live public performances from 1931 to 1945, the era of his greatest fame. Three-act plays, vaudeville sketches, variety shows, and personal appearances are all chronicled at length, bringing new perspective to Lugosi's life and career. Gary Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger have once again delivered the goods with their latest work Bela Lugosi in Person. They have combined their gift for scholarly research with an entertaining style to unveil fascinating aspects of Lugosi's stage career and the personal dramas that took place behind stage. Chockfull of surprises and new revelations that will delight every reader, but particularly aficionados who know Lugosi, but not "Lugosi in Person." Simply superb. - Robert Cremer, author of Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape I've been a fan of Bela Lugosi for some six decades. Ironically I'd never heard of the actor until the day in 1956 that he died, when my Mother informed me of his passing. Now I'm also a fan of Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger, a team who, it seems, know - and care - more about the man best known for his role of Count Dracula, and getting the facts about that man accurately recorded, than anyone else on the planet. Rhodes' previous book, Tod Browning's Dracula, and Rhodes and Kaffenberger's No Traveler Returns, are incredibly well-researched and entertaining studies of the actor's career that I could not put down once I began reading them ... and this new tome, written with the same scholarship and style, completes a literary trilogy every Bela Lugosi enthusiast should own and read. Highly recommended! - Donald F. Glut, author of The Dracula Book and The Empire Strikes Back novelization. I witnessed the intensity of my father, Bela Lugosi, firsthand. But I did not at the time realize how unique the experience was. His personal magnetism has survived in people's memories and in our culture. This is evidenced by the desire of so many people wanting to connect to Dad by connecting to me - at conventions, on the street and anywhere they hear the name "Bela Lugosi." It was Dad's elegance and captivating personality that made Count Dracula such an alluring yet horrific figure, so I can imagine the draw my father must have created when he was to appear in person - and the effect he must have had on a live audience. I am grateful that Gary Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger's new book shines a light on Dad's personal appearances, a previously uncovered facet of his career and legacy. - Bela G. Lugosi

Book The Immortal Count

Download or read book The Immortal Count written by Arthur Lennig and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bela Lugosi won immediate fame for his portrayal of the immortal count in the 1931 film Dracula. After a decade of trying vainly to broaden his range and secure parts to challenge his acting abilities, Lugosi resigned himself to a career as the world's most recognizable vampire. His last years were spent as a forgotten and rather tragic figure. When he died in 1956, Lugosi could not have known that vindication of his talent would come—his face would adorn theaters, his image would appear on greeting cards and postage stamps, his film memorabilia would sell for more than he earned in his entire career, and his Hungarian accent would be instantly recognized by millions of people. Martin Landau's Oscar-winning role as Lugosi in the 1994 film Ed Wood added an ironic twist to a career that had ended in oblivion. In 1974, devoted Lugosi fan Arthur Lennig published a highly regarded biography of the unsung actor. More than twice the length of the original and completely rewritten, The Immortal Count provides deeper insights into Lugosi's films and personality. Drawing upon personal interviews, studio memos, shooting scripts, research in Romania and Hungary, and his own recollections, Lennig has written the definitive account of Lugosi's tragic life.

Book Becoming Dracula The Early Years of Bela Lugosi Vol 1 hardback

Download or read book Becoming Dracula The Early Years of Bela Lugosi Vol 1 hardback written by Gary D. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cobwebs of time and space are finally cleared. Drawing on years of research across four countries, excavating and analyzing thousands of yellowed documents in archives as well as every digitized source, Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger shine light from their candelabrum onto a long-forgotten past, onto the creation of a legend. Becoming Dracula is a two-volume biography covering Bela Lugosi's life from his birth to 1930, when he first played the famous vampire onscreen. "No one has chronicled the life and career of Bela Lugosi with more precision than Gary Rhodes. With Becoming Dracula: The Early Years of Bela Lugosi, Volume One, Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger detail Lugosi's heretofore obscure early life in Austria-Hungary with a level of focused research akin to literary paleontology. As fascinating as the future Count Dracula's journey through Europe to America is, Lugosi-philes everywhere will rejoice that there will be a Volume Two continuation!" - Alan K. Rode, author of Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film (2017) "The path to becoming a vampire is simplicity itself: one need only fall victim to the notorious Count Dracula. The path that led to becoming Count Dracula, though, was lengthy, arduous, and fraught with disappointment, especially for the noble bloodsucker's initial cinematic portrayer, Bela Lugosi. Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger have returned to focus their impeccable research and unimpeachable historicity on that path. 'Tis a path that begs to be followed." - John Soister, author of Conrad Veidt on Screen (2009) and Many Selves: The Horror and Fantasy Films of Paul Wegener (2017)

Book Robert Florey s Frankenstein Starring Bela Lugosi

Download or read book Robert Florey s Frankenstein Starring Bela Lugosi written by Philip J. Riley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the success of Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, Universal Pictures was quick to capitalize on creating a new Lon Chaney in Bela Lugosi. Chaney had been the original choice to portray a duel role as both Dracula and Professor van Helsing, Dracula's adversary. Before production could begin Chaney died suddenly leaving Carl Laemmle Jr. without a star. Laemmle Jr. had seen Dracula on the stage in New York City, although he could not recall if he had seen Lugosi or Raymond Huntley in the role of Count Dracula. However Lugosi was performing in the touring company which happened to be in Los Angeles at that time. Was he the new Lon Chaney? Lugosi was not Carl Jr's first choice for the role. However he eventually won the part and now they needed more ideas for him. "Murders in the Rue Morgue," "Cagliostro," "The Invisible Man" and "Frankenstein" were top on the list. One day in March 1931 Robert Florey, recently returned to Hollywood from Europe, was having lunch at the Musso and Frank Restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard. He was approached by an old acquaintance, Richard Schayer, head of Universal's story department. Schayer told him that his studio was looking for ideas for a new horror film to star Bela Lugosi and he knew Florey was involved with The Theatre du Grand-Guignol de Paris, (a small theater, in an obscure alley in Paris which specialized in sadistic, shocking, explicit, violent melodramas and became known as the "Theater of Horrors." It opened in 1897 and closed in 1962.) They both agreed on "Frankenstein" being the best choice. Schayer suggested that Florey would stand a better chance at being asigned writer and director if he were to present the idea to Carl Laemmle Jr. We present now the script for"Frankenstein" as it would have been had Bela Lugosi starred; and Rober Florey directed.

Book excerpt: The Pilgrims is no ordinary alternate-world fantasy; with this first volume in The Pendulum Trilogy, Will Elliott's brilliantly subversive imagination twists the conventions of the alternate-world fantasy genre, providing an unforgettable visionary experience. Eric Albright is a twenty-six-year-old journalist living in London. That is to say he would be a journalist if he got off his backside. But this luckless slacker isn't all bad—he has a soft spot for his sometimes friend Stuart Casey, the homeless old drunk who mostly lives under the railway bridge near his flat. Eric is willing to let his life just drift by...until the day a small red door appears on the graffiti-covered wall of the bridge, and a gang of strange-looking people—Eric's pretty sure one of them is a giant—dash out of the door and rob the nearby newsagent. From that day on Eric and Case haunt the arch, waiting for the door to reappear. When it does, both Eric and Case choose to go through...to the land of Levaal. A place where a mountain-sized dragon with the powers of a god lies sleeping beneath a great white castle. In the castle the sinister Lord Vous rules with an iron fist, and the Project, designed to effect his transformation into an immortal spirit, nears completion. But Vous's growing madness is close to consuming him, together with his fear of an imaginary being named Shadow. And soon Eric may lend substance to that fear. An impossibly vast wall divides Levall, and no one has ever seen what lies beyond. Eric and Casey are called Pilgrims, and may have powers that no one in either world yet understands, and soon the wall may be broken. What will enter from the other side? The Pendulum Trilogy #1 The Pilgrims #2 Shadow #3 World's End At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
