Book excerpt: Over twenty-two months in 1979 and 1981 nearly two dozen children were unspeakably murdered in Atlanta despite national attention and outcry; they were all Black. James Baldwin investigated these murders, the Black administration in Atlanta, and Wayne Williams, the Black man tried for the crimes. Because there was only evidence to convict Williams for the murders of two men, the children's cases were closed, offering no justice to the families or the country. Baldwin's incisive analysis implicates the failures of integration as the guilt party, arguing, "There could be no more devastating proof of this assault than the slaughter of the children." During their years on the road, she sang and played the piano as “Mama” in The Mullins Family as they traveled America in evangelism and gos-pel music from 1978 – 1994. To-day, she works daily in the office of Hope for the World Albania with her husband, Roger and their daughter, Cindy. Since 1994, they have been ministering to thousands of orphan children of Albania, hundreds of senior citizens and the handicapped through Hope for the World as Directors of this ministry. This book is her third in a series under the title of “The Making of a Wonderful Life” . The first was subtitled “Recording Reflections” and specifically pertained to two of the family’s recording projects produced in the 90’s. Her second book was subtitled “Family Foundations” and covered Cherie’s childhood days through the beginning of Bible College for her husband. This book, subti-tled Joyous Journey takes you through their lives from 1970—1994 in which they were involved full-time as a family in church ministry, evangelism and gospel music. Cherie believes she has one more book to write which will portray their years since 1994 in the field of foreign mission work in the country of Albania with Hope for the World. They have fo-cused on assisting orphans, widows, and handicapped and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. She believes that book will be subtitled “Mission Memoirs”, or something very similar. She hopes to have that one published within a couple of years. It is her desire that as you read this book, you will get to know her family personally and understand all that went into The Making of “their” Won-derful Life through this volume subtitled “Joyous Journey”.

In the United States, famed aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran formed the Women Airforce Service Pilots program, where over one thousand women flyers ferried aircraft from factories to airbases throughout the United States and Canada from 1942 to 1944. The WASP operated from 110 facilities and flew more than 60 million miles in 78 different types of aircraft, from the smallest trainers to the fastest fighters and the largest bombers. The WASP performed every duty inside the cockpit as their male counterparts, except combat, and 38 women pilots gave their lives in the service of their country. Notwithstanding their outward appearance as official members of the U.S. Army Air Forces, the WASP were considered civil servants during the war. Despite a highly publicized attempt to militarize in 1944, the women pilots would not be granted veteran status until 1977. In the Soviet Union, Marina Raskova, Russia's Amelia Earhart, famous for her historic Far East flight in 1938, formed the USSR's first all-female aviation regiments that flew combat missions along the Eastern Front. A little over one thousand women flew a combined total of more than 30 thousand combat sorties, producing at least 30 Heroes of the Soviet Union. Included in their ranks were at least two fighter aces. More than 50 women pilots were killed in action. Sharing both patriotism and a mutual love of aviation, these pioneering women flyers faced similar obstacles while challenging assumptions of male supremacy in wartime culture. Despite experiencing discrimination from male aircrews during the war, these intrepid airwomen ultimately earned their respect. The pilots' exploits and their courageous story, told so convincingly here, continue to inspire future generations of women in aviation.

It was ‘Sultans of Swing’, a very wordy song with lots of driving guitar, a tight rhythm section and some killer musicianship. Dire Straits, unlikely pop stars led by a 29-year-old Geordie who could play guitar brilliantly, had finally arrived. Six years later, they were, for a time, the biggest band in the world. Brothers in Arms sold by the truckload, one of the first massive sellers on CD. Since then, however, their star has fallen. Over exposure as the safe, boring champions of the CD age has resulted in Dire Straits becoming, to many, the embodiment of a certain sort of benign, homogenised music. Mark Knopfler, their singer, guitarist, producer and songwriter, became a caricature of the middle-aged rocker in the minds of many. Their music remains stubbornly unfashionable but retains its huge fanbase. Dire Straits On Track revisits, re-evaluates and contextualises the band’s six studio albums and two live albums, as well as EPs and archive releases. Race and Retail documents the extent to which retail establishments, both past and present, have often catered to specific ethnic and racial groups.
