Book Being a Vegetarian by Choice A Natural Healthier Alternative

Download or read book Being a Vegetarian by Choice A Natural Healthier Alternative written by Dueep Jyot Singh and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Arguments for Vegetarianism A Little Bit about Religious Fasting Reasons to Grow Your Own Food “Bon Marche-Bargain Prices” Different Beliefs about Vegetarianism Some home truths about a non-vegetarian diet (told to me by a Doctor) Fishy Tales Eggs. Eggs. Eggs… Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction A couple of months ago, a number of my friends were talking to me, about different lifestyles and food choices, and when I told them that I was thinking of turning vegetarian after more than four decades of being a thorough carnivore and omnivore, the derisive laugh that went up was enough to nearly shatter sensitive eardrums. And then the ribbing started. See that holy pious cat, going on a pilgrimage after downing down a thousand rats. I told them that it was not necessary for them to follow in my footsteps and they could continue chomping down on their juicy barbecues, hamburgers, and steaks, but I had decided to follow a vegetarian lifestyle to see how it affected my health in the long run. Many people may think that this response is a bit too much but the real reason is that the fixed nature of our habits and the unwillingness to change our lifestyles to something else is inherent in the majority of us. I come in that category. So naturally when I decided to change my diet choice, my friends were skeptical. And naturally so because they could not think of changing their own dietary habits of a lifetime to try something else, especially a totally vegetarian diet. All right, let me admit it. I turned semi- vegetarian in 1999, up to 2004, and I must say that I was never more healthy, more energetic and even I must admit more “good-looking”, ever in my life. My hair and skin shone and glowed. Now I understood the secrets of the ancient ladies, who never ate meat, because according to them, that was a diet best left for the men.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of vegetarianism, a lifestyle that embraces the power of plant-based eating for the betterment of your health and the planet. its impact on personal well-being, and the environment. Prepare to embark on a journey of discovery, as we delve into the comprehensive guidance this book offers for adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. A vegetarian is an individual who follows a dietary and lifestyle choice that abstains from the consumption of meat, poultry, and seafood. Vegetarians primarily rely on plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds for their nutritional needs. The vegetarian lifestyle is guided by various motivations, including health, ethics, the environment, and cultural or spiritual beliefs. Many vegetarians choose this path to improve their overall health by embracing a diet rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, while reducing their intake of saturated fats and cholesterol often found in animal-based products. By doing so, they aim to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and other chronic illnesses. Additionally, vegetarian diets are often associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and improved weight management. Potential Cost Savings: In some cases, a vegetarian diet can be more affordable compared to a diet that includes meat. Plant-based proteins such as legumes, tofu, and whole grains are often more cost-effective than animal proteins. By reducing or eliminating the purchase of expensive meat products, individuals can potentially save money on their grocery bills. It's important to note that while vegetarianism offers numerous benefits, it's essential to plan and maintain a balanced diet to ensure adequate nutrient intake. Paying attention to protein, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids is particularly important for vegetarians. Overall, being a vegetarian allows individuals to reap the benefits of improved health, ethical choices, reduced environmental impact, culinary exploration, and even potential cost savings. It is a lifestyle choice that aligns personal values with actions that promote well-being for oneself,

Book The Vegetarian Alternative

Download or read book The Vegetarian Alternative written by Vic S. Sussman and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 1978 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The fundamentals of a sensible vegetarian diet areexamined, reviewing nutrition, health, ethics, philosophy and kitchen techniques. Vegetarians can be divided into three groups: the lacto-vegetarian, who uses milk; the lacto-ovo-vegetarian, who uses milk and eggs; and the vegan or total vegetarian who eats no food of animal origin. The most important nutritional guideline for vegetarians is to eat a wide variety of foods. Scientists and researchers, looking at the possible dietary causes of many diseases of western industrialized countries, are discovering that vegetarian diets may be a link to preventive health. Additionally, vegetarian diets, if properly maintained, can easily provide adequate amounts of protein, vitamins, minerals and calories. Those switching to vegetarian diets can do so without purchasing costly new equipment, except perhaps a food processor. Sample recipes include soybean pate, deep fried tofu and falafel.

Book Vegetarian Nutrition and Wellness

Download or read book Vegetarian Nutrition and Wellness written by Winston J. Craig and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large amount of research effort goes into assessing the health benefits of a plant-based diet, resulting from human desire to consume a more sustainable diet that is less destructive of the earth’s natural resources. In addition, a growing number of people are choosing the vegan or total vegetarian diet because of the potential to greatly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and mortality rates. Although this interest in plant-based eating is popular, there exist concerns on the safety of some vegetarian diets, especially a vegan diet. This book describes issues of the vegetarian diet and outlines ways to prevent nutrient deficiencies. Vegetarian Nutrition and Wellness focuses on synthesizing research around vegetarian diets and human health. A major section of the book deals with how a vegetarian diet protects population groups from the major chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and various cancers. Based upon ecological and clinical studies, chapter authors explain the health-promoting properties of plant-based diets, and compare/contrast health outcomes obtained from consuming omnivorous diets with a vegetarian or vegan diet. Fruits and vegetables figure prominently in vegetarian diets and provide a substantial effect in disease reduction and health-promoting properties of a plant-based diet. Vegetarian Nutrition and Wellness is written for the academic community, registered dietitians, health professionals, and graduate students in nutrition and public health. Each chapter provides a comprehensive review of the scientific literature and includes a concise summary at the beginning of each chapter. The time is ripe for this book to update the scientific community with a collage of well-documented topics on vegetarian nutrition.

Download or read book To Eat or Not To Eat Meat written by Charlotte De Backer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, people are shifting to vegetarian, plant-based, or vegan diets. This shift is having profound effects on our social interactions, and this is the focus of this book. Becoming a vegetarian or vegan involves more than just changing your diet. It can change how you socially and emotionally connect with family, friends and the broader community, shape your outlook on life, and open up new worlds and contacts. It can also lead to uncomfortable situations, if dietary choices involving a rejection of meat are read by others as an ethical and moral judgement on mainstream dietary choices. This book adopts an innovative narrative approach, and draws on stories across the globe to consider how the food choices we make in our everyday lives can lead to complex, and sometimes life changing, social consequences. The narratives cover a range of topics, including the moral reasons behind some individuals’ decision to change their diets, the religious or ecological considerations, and the potential health and social ramifications. To date, the social consequences of selecting a plant-based diet have been sorely overlooked in favour of texts that have documented the benefits of such diets, and usually focus on health, animal welfare and/or environmental issues, with the aim of persuading readers to give up meat, and change to a ‘healthy’ and/or ‘sustainable’ diet. Cultural studies texts considering vegetarianism or veganism have typically targeted academic audiences with analyses of how identity is constructed through food and dietary choices. In contrast, this book offers a unique window onto how our social lives are implicated in our food choices, and is critical in understanding the importance of diet as embedded in complex social processes.

Book The Vegetarian Imperative

Download or read book The Vegetarian Imperative written by Anand M. Saxena and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have learned not to take food seriously: we eat as much as we want of what we want when we want it, and we seldom think about the health and environmental consequences of our choices. But the fact is that every choice we make has an impact on our health and on the environment. In The Vegetarian Imperative, Anand M. Saxena, a scientist and a vegetarian for most of his life, explains why we need to make better choices: for better health, to eliminate world hunger, and, ultimately, to save the planet. Our insatiable appetite for animal-based foods contributes directly to high rates of chronic diseases—resulting in both illness and death. It also leads to a devastating overuse of natural resources that dangerously depletes the food available for human consumption. The burgeoning population and increasing preference for meat in all parts of the world are stretching planetary resources beyond their limits, and the huge livestock industry is degrading the agricultural land and polluting air and water. Continuing at this pace will bring us to the crisis point in just a few decades—a reality that threatens not only our current lifestyle but our very survival. This book shows us a way out of this dangerous and vicious cycle, recommending a much-needed shift to a diet of properly chosen plant-based foods. Any one of these arguments alone—personal health, worldwide hunger, and environmental degradation—provides reason enough to stop consuming so much animal-based food; taken together, they make an unassailable case for vegetarianism. The Vegetarian Imperative will make you rethink what you eat—and help you save the planet.

Book excerpt: In our modern society, there is an increasing awareness of the impact our dietary choices have on our overall well-being and the environment. One such lifestyle choice gaining popularity is vegetarianism. But what exactly is a vegetarian diet? A vegetarian diet primarily consists of plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It excludes the consumption of meat, poultry, and seafood. However, there are different types of vegetarian diets, varying in the level of strictness or flexibility. The most common type is lacto-ovo vegetarianism, which allows for the consumption of dairy products and eggs. On the other hand, lacto-vegetarians consume dairy but avoid eggs. Vegans take it a step further by excluding all animal products and by-products from their diets, including dairy, eggs, and even honey. Why do people choose to adopt a vegetarian diet? There are several reasons, and the benefits extend beyond personal health. Firstly, a vegetarian diet tends to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, making it a heart-healthy option. It is also rich in fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals, providing all the necessary nutrients for a well-balanced diet. Moreover, vegetarianism has a positive impact on the environment. The production of meat and other animal products is resource-intensive and contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing a vegetarian diet, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and help preserve our planet for future generations. Another significant benefit of a vegetarian diet is its potential to prevent and manage various chronic diseases. Studies have shown that vegetarians have a lower risk of developing conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. Additionally, adopting a plant-based diet has been associated with improved digestion, increased energy levels, and enhanced weight management
