Book Beholding the Invisible Embracing the Infinite

Download or read book Beholding the Invisible Embracing the Infinite written by Franklin L. Best and published by . This book was released on 2022-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God exist? How do you perceive Him? "How can we conceive of God, and what is the nature of our relationship with Him? What may we expect of our relationships with God and our fellow believers, and what may they expect of their relationships with us? In Beholding the Invisible, Frank Best skillfully deploys abundant and well-chosen passages of scripture to answer these and other eternal questions and, for good measure, defends the Christian faith against the assaults of atheists and rival religions. Beholding the Invisible is a must-read for Christians who want to draw closer to God and their fellow believers and, along the way, equip themselves with informed responses to those who are critical of our faith." -Brett Preston, author of One Taken "Not wild about books about religion? Prepare to be shocked and delighted. Beholding the Invisible, Embracing the Infinite is required reading for anyone curious about the concepts of faith, eternity and, well, the meaning of life. Frank Best gives you new and intriguing takes on the likes of Bertrand Russell, Sigmund Freud, and Erich Fromm. Does God exist? Is God dead? Will good works get you where you want to go? You may never think about these questions the same way after reading this remarkable and accessible volume." -Royal Oakes, co-host of the podcast Too Many Lawyers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers reflections on a number of theological themes, going beyond abstraction to ask what is involved in coming to know God--through all the praying, struggling, and rejoicing that entails. For speaking accurately about God cannot be done apart from beholding him. We are all too prone to forget the innocence of life's immediacy as we become weathered by the passage of time. Wonder is a fragile thing that struggles for breath amidst our everyday habits, environment, and slothfulness of vision. We require guidance to see the world's wonder, but we are given to a time that is less than hospitable to transcendental ends. This book's purpose is to inspire perpetual reconsideration of the wonder of things. Behold Our God does not relate personal experience or dogmatic confession for the sake of a certain end, but rather seeks to excite the rhapsody of God and reveal the profundity of life, anticipating the day when it shall be said, "Behold, this is our God" (Isa 25:9).

Book Divine Beauty

Download or read book Divine Beauty written by John O'Donohue and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eagerly awaited follow-up to his international bestsellers Anam Cara and Eternal Echoes, John O'Donohue turns his attention to the subject of beauty - the divine beauty that calls the imagination and awakens all that is noble in the human heart. In these uncertain times of global conflict and crisis, we are riven with anxiety; our trust in the future has lost its innocence, for we know now that anything can happen from one second to the next. In such an unsheltered world, it may sound naive to suggest that this might be the moment to invoke and awaken beauty, yet this is exactly the claim that this book seeks to explore. DIVINE BEAUTY is a gentle but urgent call to awaken. O'Donohue opens our eyes, hearts and minds to the wonder of our own relationship with beauty. Rather than 'covering' this theme, he uncovers it, exposing the infinity and mystery of its breadth. His words return us home to the dignity of silence, the profundity of stillness, the power of thought and perception, and the eternal grace and generosity of beauty's presence. In this masterful and revelatory work, O'Donohue encourages our greater intimacy with beauty, and celebrates it for what it really is: a homecoming of the human spirit. As he focuses on the classical, medieval and Celtic traditions, on art, music, literature, nature and language, O'Donohue reveals how beauty's invisible embrace invites us towards new heights of passion and creativity. DIVINE BEAUTY is an exquisite treasury of Forms of the Beautiful. Its surface employs narrative, image, anecdote and myth, while into the silence of its subtext are sown seeds of reflection that gradually blossom in the heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) earned the title, ''The Prince of Preachers'' by his untiring pulpit work which produced many thousands of sermons in his 40+ years of preaching. This fine collection of Spurgeon's sermons on faith has twelve different sermons, variously displaying various kinds of faith. Sermon 1: Little Faith. Some born-again Christians have little, or weak, faith. Spurgeon points out first that it is a burden to have but little faith. Though Little-faith is quite sure of Heaven, Yet he suffers from lack of assurance. Unlike normal faith, it does not grow steadily from faith to faith. He quotes Bunyan as saying that one of little faith has a host of fears. ''It has more lives than a cat, '' if you kill it over and over, it still lives. He is always safe, but he seldom knows it. Sermon 2: Here the reader is instructed in ''Seeing Jesus, '' by faith. Faith is the eye of the soul. It alone will be ''looking unto Jesus.'' Seeing Jesus is a continuous thing with faith. It is not just a now and then thing. It is current, not future. It never completely loses sight of the Savior as long as it is exercised. He is everywhere, therefore we can see Him everywhere we are, or where we go. Sermon 3: The difference between little faith and great faith is not such a great gulf as that between little faith and no faith. At times Jesus called the apostles ''Little faiths'' (Matt. 8:26; 16:8; Luke 12:28). Peter had faith to walk on the water until he looked at the wind instead of Jesus. Faith is never in danger as long as it has its eye on Jesus. Sermon 4: Faith is essential to please God. (Heb. 11:6). No invention of men can please God without faith. If God is pleased to give us everlasting life, it should be the object of our lives to please God. To faith, His commands will be precious, and the faithful will always be obeying. Sermon 5: There is a necessity of growing faith. The apostle was cheered that the Thessalonians had faith that grew exceedingly (2 Thess. 1:4). If we know our faith is growing, it is a subject for devout thanksgiving. Increased faith is of unspeakable value. Let us diligently pursue it. Sermon 6: Faith is a shield (Eph. 6:16). All Christians are born to be warriors, and faith is our shield to use against the world, the flesh, and the devil. The more the faith, the more the attacks, and the shield of faith receives many a blow. Christians should learn to wield the shield, and the lessons are all in the Bible. Christ used Scripture to fight off Satan's attempts to down him. Sermon 7: Increased faith increases peace. Sermon 8: Mature faith was illustrated by Abraham's offering up of Isaac. First there was the trial. He must lose the son of the promise by his own act. Abraham did not hesitate, he was quick to obey. He was careful to take everything necessary to do the deed. Lastly, he proceeded to very instant of putting the knife to the throat of his beloved son. Did this not display mature faith indeed? Sermons 9, 10, 11, 12 are equally precious and rewarding: Faith and Life; Faith's Dawn and Cloud; Faith and Its Privileges; and lastly, the Nobleman's Faith.
