Book Behind the Stained Glass

Download or read book Behind the Stained Glass written by Christopher M. Hamlin and published by Crane Hill Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most infamous incident of the Civil Rights Movement occurred on 15 September, 1963. Four young black girls, planning to serve as worship leaders for Youth Day at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, were killed in a massive dynamite explosion shortly before the Sunday service. Hamlin, the current pastor, provides a detailed history of the church as it approaches its 125th anniversary. This history differs little from that of other urban Southern black churches, and it would thus hold limited interest were it not for the tragic incident. The congregation had little involvement in social issues before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. turned the church into a staging area for his Birmingham protests. Much of the history involves a frequent turnover of pastors because of continuously disgruntled minority factions. The Reverend Hamlin has remained nine years and apparently has set the church on a positive path. This book is of interest to social historians.

Book excerpt: The reality of a stained glass ceiling is familiar to most women called to the pastorate. Despite being more likely to be seminary educated, female clergy constitute less than 10 percent of Protestant leading pastorates and those who do hold such pastorates are generally paid less than their male counterparts. In light of such statistics, Pastor Chris Smith explores how to overcome the challenges in breaking through the stained glass ceiling and she goes a step further. She shares the lessons learned and best practices of the success stories those women who are currently serving in solo or senior pastorates. Based on a national survey of female clergy, this volume is rich in insights based on data as well as personal anecdotes insights that will empower not only women called to the pastorate but also their male colleagues and denominational leaders who want to support them.

Book Arts Crafts Stained Glass

Download or read book Arts Crafts Stained Glass written by Peter Cormack and published by Paul Mellon Centre. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful corrective demonstrating the Arts and Crafts Movement's indelible impact on British and American stained glass Beautifully illustrated and based on more than three decades of research, Arts & Crafts Stained Glass is the first study of how the late-19th-century Arts and Crafts Movement transformed the aesthetics and production of stained glass in Britain and America. A progressive school of artists, committed to direct involvement both in making and designing windows, emerged in the 1880s and 1890s, reinventing stained glass as a modern, expressive art form. Using innovative materials and techniques, they rejected formulaic Gothic Revivalism while seeking authentic, creative inspiration in medieval traditions. This new approach was pioneered by Christopher Whall (1849-1924), whose charismatic teaching educated a generation of talented pupils--both men and women--who produced intensely colorful and inventive stained glass, using dramatic, lyrical, and often powerfully moving design and symbolism. Peter Cormack demonstrates how women made critical contributions to the renewal of stained glass as artists and entrepreneurs, gaining meaningful equality with their male colleagues, more fully than in any other applied art. Cormack restores stained glass to its proper status as an important field of Arts and Crafts activity, with a prominent role in the movement's polemical campaigning, its public exhibitions, and its educational program. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
