Now, historian Sharan Newman elucidates the mysteries and misconceptions of the Templars, from their true first founding and role in the Crusades to more modern intrigues, including: - Were they devout knights or secret heretics? - Did they leave behind a fantastic treasure-hidden to this day? - How did they come to be associated with the Holy Grail? - Did they come to America before the time of Columbus? - Does the order still exist?

Download or read book The Moonlit Way A Novel written by Robert William Chambers and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a big moon over the Bosphorus; the limpid waters off Seraglio Point glimmered; the Golden Horn was like a sheet of beaten silver inset with topaz and ruby where lanterns on rusting Turkish warships dyed the tarnished argent of the flood. Except for these, and the fixed lights on the foreign guard-ships and on a big American steam yacht, only a pale and nebulous shoreward glow betrayed the monster city. Over Pera the full moon’s lustre fell, silvering palace, villa, sea and coast; its rays glimmered on bridge and wharf, bastion, tower arsenal, and minarette, transforming those big, sprawling, ramshackle blotches of architecture called Constantinople into that shadowy, magnificent enchantment of the East, which all believe in, but which exists only in a poet’s heart and mind. Night veiled the squalour of Balat, and its filth, its meanness, its flimsy sham. Moonlight made of Galata a marvel, ennobling every bastard dome, every starved façade, every unlovely and attenuated minarette, and invested with added charm each really lovely ruin, each tower, palace, mosque, garden wall and balcony, and every crenelated battlement, where the bronze bulk of ancient cannon slanted, outlined in silver under the Prophet’s moon. Tiny moving lights twinkled on the Galata Bridge; pale points of radiance dotted Scutari; but the group of amazing cities called Constantinople lay almost blotted out under the moon. Darker at night than any capital in the world, its huge, solid and ancient shapes bulking gigantic in the night, its noble ruins cloaked, its cheap filth hidden, its flimsy Coney Island aspect transfigured and the stylographic-pen architecture of a hundred minarettes softened into slender elegance, Constantinople lay dreaming its immemorial dreams under the black shadow of the Prussian eagle.
Download or read book The French Conundrum written by James Heatherly and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes, his trusted friend, Dr. John Watson, and his older brother, Mycroft, successfully unraveled a devious assassination plot against one of Queen Victoria's family. Aided by a colorful assortment of associates, a clever trap was set to attempt to stop the gang of villains from carrying out their deadly intent. Holmes had hoped their capture would lead him a step closer to the mastermind behind all of the wide-reaching criminalities. But, dead men tell no tales, and Holmes quickly learned whoever was at the head of this sinister house was a ruthless master, who did not suffer defeat without penalty, and who made certain no one would ever get an opportunity to tell what they knew. Meanwhile, Ormond Sacker, a friend of Holmes from their university days, insinuated himself into a group of anarchists gathered in a boisterous cabaret in Paris, and learned of another assassination planned for Germany. Racing to Berlin on the Orient Express, and with the aid of a retired French detective, C. Auguste Dupin, an Italian lothario, and a clever and fearless journalist, Sacker concocts a scheme to upend the assassination attempt, at the risk of his own life. Moreover, Holmes is convinced the world has not heard the last of this sinister house. And his apprehensions are soon realized when threats loom large in England and on the Continent.
Download or read book Raising the Barre written by Lauren Kessler and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like generations of little girls, Lauren Kessler fell in love with ballet the first time she saw The Nutcracker, and from that day, at age five, she dreamed of becoming a ballerina. But when she was twelve, her very famous ballet instructor crushed those dreams -- along with her youthful self-assurance -- and she stepped away from the barre. Fast forward four decades. Lauren -- suddenly, powerfully, itchingly restless at midlife -- embarks on a "Transcontinental Nutcracker Binge Tour," where attending a string of performances in Chicago, New York, Boston, and San Francisco reignites her love affair with the ballet--and fuels her girlhood dream. What ensues is not only a story about The Nutcracker itself, but also an inside look at the seemingly romantic -- but oh-so-gritty -- world of ballet, about all that happens away from the audience's eye that precedes the magic on stage. It is a tale told from the perspective of someone who not only loves it, but is also seeking to live it. Lauren's quest to dance The Nutcracker with the Eugene Ballet Company tackles the big issues: fear, angst, risk, resilience, the refusal to "settle in" to midlife, the refusal to become yet another Invisible Woman. It is also a very funny, very real look at what it's like to push yourself further than you ever thought you could go -- and what happens when you get there.

Download or read book Let It Bleed written by Pamela Des Barres and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the international bestseller I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, Pamela Des Barres shares with women the art of memoir writing. For the last fourteen years, Pamela Des Barres has been teaching an eight-week women's "femoir" writing workshop. She found that the music-loving ladies who showed up at her door had pent-up stories to tell. Many of them had read her two memoirs, which were wildly personal and deeply confessional, and felt comfortable opening up and experiencing that same freedom of expression. In this book, Des Barres guides women through the process of writing their memoirs. She has developed exercises to help her "dolls" recall, remember, relive, and reveal their memories, transgressions, temptations, their sleepless nights and brilliant afternoons, loves and losses, fears and regrets, secrets, sins, and sorrows. The assignments in Femoir have proven incredibly cathartic for her students. Just as intimate as one of her in-person workshops, this book includes some of Des Barres's own stories, as well as those of the women she's taught. Every person has an incredible story to tell—they just need to figure out how to tell it. By understanding themselves better through these writing exercises, women learn to be more fearless, free-spirited, and willing to try something new.
