Book excerpt: This is the report of the second behavioral response study to be carried out on beaked whales and pilot whales in which these animals, and other species, were exposed to carefully measured doses of underwater sound while their responses were being measured. The study is seen as a step in a series of similar experiments that are designed to safely identify the behavioral mechanisms that may be involved in the causal chain of events leading from exposure to some types of manmade underwater sound to mass strandings of beaked whales and to test whether this risk extends to other cetaceans. This short report describes the preliminary results of the Behavioral Response Study of deep-diving cetaceans carried out in 2008 (BRS-08). The rationale for the study comes from a hypothesis that some types of sonar signals can affect the behavior of some deep-diving odontocete cetaceans, especially beaked whales, and may lead to strandings on some occasions. The study was designed to examine the response of cetaceans to sonar sounds and control sounds.

Book excerpt: The long-term goals of this project are to contribute towards the development of a science-based sonar use policy for the US Navy which reduces the risk of injury to beaked whales from mid-frequency sonar. This project will also increase our understanding of the population and behavioral ecology of beaked whales and other cetacean species which occur in the AUTEC-Andros Operating Area in the Tongue of the Ocean, northern Bahamas, and will help to mitigate the effects of naval activities on these populations. The over-riding objective of this effort was to provide field support for Phase II of the Behavior Response Study which took place in 2008, known as BRS-08. Specific objectives were: 1) To work with the Marine Mammal Monitoring (M3R) program at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) to visually locate cetaceans detected acoustically on the AUTEC range, with a particular focus on finding beaked whales (Family Ziphiidae). 2) To photo-identify individual animals within each group found. 3) To attach digital acoustic tags or Dtags to beaked whales, pilot whales and other species to prepare for playback experiments and to gather baseline data on the diving behavior of these species in Tongue of the Ocean (TOTO). 4) To conduct focal follows of the tagged whale(s) before, during and after a playback experiment. 5) To conduct aerial surveys for stranded or injured cetaceans before BRS-08 commenced, following each playback (if deemed necessary), and after BRS-08 ended, as part of the BRS mitigation. 6) To provide a team from a Bahamian non-governmental organization to allow independent observation of the experiment.

Book excerpt: Animal learning and human learning traditions have been distinguishable within psychology since the start of the discipline and are to this day. The human learning wing was interested in the development of psychological functions in human organisms and proceeded directly to their examination. The animal learning wing was not distinguished by a corresponding interest in animal behavior per se. Rather, the animal learners studied animal behavior in order to identify principles of behavior of relevance to humans as well as other organisms. The two traditions, in other words, did not differ so much on goals as on strategies. It is not by accident that so many techniques of modem applied psychol ogy have emerged from the animal laboratory. That was one of the ultimate purposes of this work from the very beginning. The envisioned extension to humans was not just technological, however. Many animal researchers, B. F. Skinner most prominently among them, recognized that direct basic research with humans might ultimately be needed in certain areas but that it was wise first to build a strong foundation in the controlled environment of the animal laboratory. In a sense, animal learning was always in part a human research program in development.

The long term goals of this multi-disciplinary scientific endeavor are to provide a wide variety of basic oceanographic and biological data and urgently needed behavioral response measurements as part of a long-term international research program that addresses many of the priorities identified by scientific reviews (National Research Council, NRC 1994, 2000, 2003, 2005; the International Council for Exploration of the Seas, ICES AGISC 2005; the UK Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology, IACMST 2006, Southall et al. 2007), the report of a technical workshop on beaked whales (Cox et al. 2006) and international bodies such as an Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) regarding the understanding and protection of cetaceans from adverse effects of anthropogenic noise, including sonar. Particularly notable among these efforts were tagging, followed by sound controlled exposure experiments on beaked whales and large delphinids at a naval testing acoustic range in the Bahamas in 2007 and 2008 (referred to as Behavior Response Studies, or BRS).
