Book Behavioral Study of Polyurethane Disc Bearings in Bridges

Download or read book Behavioral Study of Polyurethane Disc Bearings in Bridges written by Sunil Humagain and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge has a lot of components that make the structure function properly. One of the main components of a bridge is the bridge bearing. The bridge bearings transfer the loads from the superstructure to the substructure. Along with the transfer of loads, it also permits rotation and deflection during load application in order to make the bridge function properly and prevent the structure from failure. Since bridge bearings are so important to a bridge structure, its behavioral study needs to be done. There are several researches done by the Transportation Research Board regarding stiffness studies on bridge bearings. But limited number of studies of Disc Bridge Bearings is done. There is very less data available for the compressive and rotational stiffness of a disc bridge bearing. The elastomer generally used in the disc bridge bearing is a polyether urethane pad. So, in this research, compressive stiffness of the polyether urethane has been calculated using the finite element analysis software Abaqus. Pressure is applied on top of the polyether urethane bearing pad with the objective of finding its behavior. Circular and annular pads are modeled and the dimension for the pads were varied for the parametric study. Along with the finite element analysis, the closed form solution has also been done and checked with the analytical results. Through this research, the failure mechanism and the strength of a polyether urethane bearing pad can be found out. The application of different pressure in the pad helped to verify the weak elements of the pad and the mechanism of collapse. This study can be implemented to understand the behavior of a polyurethane bridge bearing pad so that the bridge engineer avoids damage in the bridge bearing.

Book Behavioral Study of Polyurethane Disc Bearings for Bridges

Download or read book Behavioral Study of Polyurethane Disc Bearings for Bridges written by Nabin Ghimire and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element analysis (FEA) has been done for polyurethane discs, one of the main components of a disc bearing, with necessary boundary conditions under compressive and rotational loadings and their integrated behavior have been studied. The compressive stiffness, rotational stiffness, bulging pattern, compressive stresses, shear stresses, and shear strain of the discs have been determined from the analysis. The results are validated with the experimental results. The results obtained from FEA are later compared with analytical results and found out that the compressive stiffness calculated from both are alike, however, the analytical method overestimates the rotational stiffness. To resemble with FEA results, the formula for both the compressive and rotational stiffnesses are proposed. In addition, failure theory has also been developed based on the FEA results. Hence, this study can be referenced to understand the behavior of the polyurethane discs, stiffnesses calculations, and develop a possible failure theory to incorporate in AASHTO specifications.

Book Ultra High Performance Concrete

Download or read book Ultra High Performance Concrete written by Caijun Shi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced cement-based composite material with compressive strength of over 120 MPa, high toughness, and superior durability. Since its development in the early 1990s, UHPC has attracted great interest worldwide due to its advantages. This book covers material selection and mixture design methods for developing UHPC, as well as the performance of UHPC, including fresh and hardened properties, setting and hardening, dimensional stability, static and dynamic properties, durability, long-term properties, and self-healing properties. A range of potential applications and case studies are presented to illustrate how UHPC meets requirements for lightweight, high-rise, large-span, heavy-load bearing, fast-construction, and highly durable structures in civil and construction engineering. Also introduced is a typical new concrete, seawater sea-sand UHPC, which avoids the use of freshwater and river sand in marine construction. The first book to fully cover the design, performance, and applications of UHPC, this is ideal for concrete technologists, designers, contractors, and researchers.
