Book Behavioral Pharmacology of the Cholinergic System

Download or read book Behavioral Pharmacology of the Cholinergic System written by Mohammed Shoaib and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-29 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular genetics of the cholinergic system including both muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, cholinesterases, acetylcholine synthesis and release have provided significant insights into potential targeting for pharmacological intervention. Cholinergic drugs are being used or evaluated for the treatment of diseases. Thus, this volume aims to broaden our understanding of the current state of cholinergic mechanisms to enable implementation of novel approaches for the development of more effective treatments.

Book Cholinergic Mechanisms and Psychopharmacology

Download or read book Cholinergic Mechanisms and Psychopharmacology written by D. Jenden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of papers which were contributed by participants at a Symposium for Cholinergic Mechanisms and Psycho pharmacology, held in La Jolla, California on March 28-30, 1977. The were chosen to emphasize areas in which there has been substantial topics progress in the past 2-3 years and fall into seven major groups dealingwith: cholinergiC receptors; chemistry, histochemistry and enzymology; cyclic nucleotides and cholinergiC mechanisms; storage, compartmentation and release of acetylcholine; regulatory mechanisms in acetylcholine metab olism; modulation of acetylcholine metabolism; and behavioral and clin ical manifestations of cholinergiC function and dysfunction. Each group contains one or more reviews and a number of shorter contributions de scribing current work. This symposium was the third in a series of which the first two were held in Skokloster, Sweden in 1970 and Boldern, Switzerland in 1974. The Proceedings of the meetings indicate a rapid development of knowledge of cholinergiC mechanisms which for many years lagged behind that of other neurotransmitters and neuroregulators. The inclusion of a large section in the present volume dealing with clinical manifestations of cholinergiC dysfunction reflects one of the most important trends in current research on cholinergiC mechanisms, namely the close inter-relationship and mutual support of basic science and clinical investigation. I hope that this volume will be of value to all those whose work relates to cholinergiC function, at both basic and clinicalleve18, and will continue to stimulate the vigorous exchange of ideas which was such a prominent feature of the Symposium.

Book Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology

Download or read book Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology written by F. van Haaren and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology is unique in offering a complete description and critical evaluation of most, if not all, methods available to study the effects of drugs on behavior. It stands apart in that it is not limited to the analysis of a particular class of pharmacological agents in a limited number of paradigms. Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology covers all paradigms without reference to specific pharmacological compounds. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the methodology used to study the behavioral effects of legal and illegal drugs. It also provides an in-depth presentation of dependent variables, their quantification and a critical evaluation of their advantages and disadvantages. An excellent work, contributed to by well-known experts in the different fields of behavioral pharmacology.

Book Contemporary Research in Behavioral Pharmacology

Download or read book Contemporary Research in Behavioral Pharmacology written by Derek Blackman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-08 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of drugs on behavior are of inherent interest and psycho pharmacology has provided a focus for research activity for many years. Until recently, however, it could be claimed that the contribution of pharmacology was more obvious than that of psychology in the de velopment of what should surely prove to be a matter for interdis ciplinary endeavor. Pharmacological analyses of drug action have frequently been expressed in terms of dose-response functions, for ex ample, with the dependent variable taking the form of patterns of be havior whose controlling influences were but poorly understood. The introduction of operant conditioning techniques has transformed psy chopharmacology in this respect. Operant analyses have traditionally emphasized the environmental determinants of behavior and have ex plored the behavioral outcomes of many different experimental ar rangements. These different behavioral repertoires have quickly proved to be of great importance in influencing the behavioral effects of drugs, and so psychologists have begun to playa role which better balances that of the pharmacologist in experimental psychophar macology. To reflect the development of these interdisciplinary studies, several excellent books have been published in recent years. These 1 have included introductory texts, collections of important experi mental reports which had appeared in learnedjournals,2 and authorita 3 tive handbooks which survey the current scene.

Book Central Cholinergic Transmission Behavioral Aspects of Cholinergic Transmission

Download or read book Central Cholinergic Transmission Behavioral Aspects of Cholinergic Transmission written by Roger W. Russell and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be argued that the ultimate criterion for establishing a relation between the cholinergic system and a particular behavior pattern would be demonstration that arousal of or changes in the behavior occur following release of ACh, a criterion analogous to that for establishing the existence of chemical transmission at an interneuronal or a neuron-neuroeffector site. This criterion would require the collection of ACh and its quantitative assessment during the same period when the behavior was being measured, a technological feat beyond our present capabilities. It is necessary to fall back upon procedures which have provided indirect evidence for cholinergic transmission. These are pharmacological in nature, using drugs as 'tools' to alter the cholinergic system in some specified manner or to mimic the role of ACh. The operational definition of the phrase, 'relation between the cholinergic system and behavior, ' is in terms of concomitant variation between these two classes of variables. The paper begins by considering logical and methodological issues in the search for such relations: specification and measurement of neurochemical and behavioral variables; manipulation of variables; and localization in experimental variation of the neurochemical system. A discussion of examples from the research literature illustrates current trends in the search. (Author).
