They then gauge the sellers' revenue of the type of auction used and of inside information, show how bidders learn to avoid the winner's curse, and present comparisions of sophisticated bidders with students, the usual guinea pigs used in laboratory experiments.

Book Economic Insights from Internet Auctions

Download or read book Economic Insights from Internet Auctions written by Patrick L. Bajari and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper surveys recent studies of Internet auctions. Four main areas of research are summarized. First, economists have documented strategic bidding in these markets and attempted to understand why sniping, or bidding at the last second, occurs. Second, some researchers have measured distortions from asymmetric information due, for instance, to the winner's curse. Third, we explore research about the role of reputation in online auctions. Finally, we discuss what Internet auctions have to teach us about auction design.

Book The Future of EMarkets

Download or read book The Future of EMarkets written by Martin Bichler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic pricing and on-line auctions are emerging as the preferred models for e-business. Forrester Research predicts that business-to-business Internet auctions will grow to $52.6 billion by 2002, while dynamically priced business-to-business transactions will rise to $88 billion, representing 27% of the value of all business-to-business e-commerce transactions. This multi-disciplinary book presents a framework of negotiation protocols for electronic markets. It is the first book to combine economics with computer science and the first to describe multidimensional auction mechanisms - i.e. automated negotiations on multiple attributes and/or multiple units of a product. In addition it summarises the introductory economics needed to understand electronic markets, and surveys the literature on negotiation and auction theory. Case studies include the trading of financial derivatives. For use in the design, implementation and upgrade of electronic markets, for researchers in: economics, information systems and operations management, computer science and all students of the e-commerce phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Internet auctions are common in nearly all consumer categories. Hence, it is not surprising that a great deal of research has emerged on the topic in recent years. New design and format considerations and a wealth of available data from various platforms provide new questions and promising research opportunities for marketing researchers. This monograph begins with the introduction of the basic settings, concepts, and processes that are the building blocks of auction research. It then focuses on the transition from pre-Internet auction research to more recent topics. Special attention is given to research opportunities as well as to experimental methods that can provide both laboratory and field data to answer important questions. The survey reviews recent empirical and theoretical works on Internet auctions with a focus on Internet auction design, formats, and features that are currently debated in the marketing literature. Some of these issues are extensions of general auction topics, but the findings can be quite different in Internet environments. We touch on new design features that are particularly relevant to Internet auctions such as feedback ratings, buy-it-now options, and different closing rules. We also look at strategic and behavioral models that are shaping marketing research on Internet auctions. Particular emphasis is given to behaviors that are relevant in offline environments but take on new meanings and forms in Internet auction environments.

Book Understanding Auctions

Download or read book Understanding Auctions written by Asunción Mochón and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, auctions have become an important field and many markets have designed new and sophisticated auction models to assign different types of items. The prime goal of this book is to set an organized classification of the main auction mechanisms in a way that readers can understand the importance of auction design and the advantages and drawbacks of each model. Given the relevance of the subject, there is a great volume of research about this topic. Nevertheless, most of these contributions use complex mathematical language difficult to understand for the average reader. In this book, the authors summarize the main ideas of the auction theory and explain them with simple language and plenty of examples. This book is a good starting point for any researcher interested in embracing the auction design as it also includes numerous real-world examples to engage the reader in the topic. “This book fills an important gap by making the main ideas and findings of auction research accessible.” Professor Paul Milgrom, Department of Economics, Stanford University.

This paper is a brief summary of the papers presented and panel discussions at the conference. The conference covered three main issues: (1) fraud and information problems on consumer-to-consumer Internet auction sites like eBay, (2) competition between auction sites and amongst auction site users, and (3) the data generated from auction sites and what inferences may be drawn from such data. The keynote address was given by Prof. Hal Varian. Varian discussed the auctions used by Google to sell "keyword" searches.

Book Behavioral Economics in Real Estate Auction Processes

Download or read book Behavioral Economics in Real Estate Auction Processes written by Serge Koch and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This master's thesis provides an in-depth insight into each aspect of behavioral biases in the real estate market environment and bidding behavioral effects in particular through analyzing its underlying implications based on theoretical considerations, regression analysis founded on a comprehensive survey as well as a meta-analysis. It aims to establish a theoretical baseline of real estate auctions along with fundamental aspects of behavioral economics and, in a second step, to give a compelling comparison between auctions and negotiated sales of real estate. Based on his earlier analysis, the author tries to identify relevant market implications and effects with respect to the real estate market and fundamental aspects of behavioral economics followed by a thorough conclusion recapitalizing the overall working process of this paper. The results show that in the real estate market investors do not seem to act rational, nor are their misconducts uncorrelated. This thesis does thus greatly challenges the foundations of market efficiency due to the existence of behavioral biases.
