Book Effect of Environment on the Stiffness of Carbon Fiber reinforced Polymer CFRP Repaired Concrete

Download or read book Effect of Environment on the Stiffness of Carbon Fiber reinforced Polymer CFRP Repaired Concrete written by Nathaniel Allen Van Etten and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens that experienced small debonded lengths exhibited bilinear behavior between the recorded uncracked and post-cracking stiffness values. Composite systems immersed at elevated temperatures are more likely to exhibit bilinear behavior than the control specimens. Meanwhile, tidal exposure was found to reduce the likelihood of bilinear behavior for beam specimens reinforced with CFRP. It was speculated that both of these phenomena were related to changes in the debonding length created by moisture exposure. Moisture exposure was found to have little effect on the post-cracking stiffness values. In some instances it was recorded that moisture exposure could produce post-cracking stiffness values higher than the control specimens. It was speculated that the high post-cracking stiffness values noticed for the immersed composite beam specimens was caused by unchanged or improved debonding behavior.

Book Bond Behaviour of Beams Reinforced with Near Surface Mounted Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer Rods Under Fatigue Loading

Download or read book Bond Behaviour of Beams Reinforced with Near Surface Mounted Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer Rods Under Fatigue Loading written by Noran Abdel Wahab and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, extensive research has been conducted on the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using externally bonded fibre reinforced polymer (FRP). More recently, near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcement has attracted an increasing amount of research as well as practical applications. In the NSM method, grooves are first cut into the concrete cover of an RC element and the FRP reinforcement is bonded inside the groove with an appropriate filler (typically epoxy paste or cement grout). The FRP reinforcement is either prestressed or non-prestressed depending on the required level of strengthening. In all cases, the bond between an NSM bar and the substrate material plays a key role in ensuring the effectiveness of NSM strengthening. The present work investigated experimentally the bond behaviour of non-prestressed and prestressed beams reinforced with near surface mounted carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars under monotonic and fatigue loading. Forty concrete beams were cast and tested in seven groups. The test variables considered in this study were: presence of internal steel reinforcement or not, the type of CFRP rod (spirally wound or sand coated) and the prestressing force (non-prestressed or prestressed).

Book Risk Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance

Download or read book Risk Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance written by Khaled M Mahmoud and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-08-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective maintenance of bridge structures comprises a broad spectrum of plans for repairs and services implemented to enable bridges to perform their intended function. These include in-depth inspection, fatigue analysis, design of mitigation measures and construction to avert component deterioration. Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. The book is aimed at bridge engineers.

Book Fundamental Behavior of Steel Concrete Composite Beams Strengthened with High Modulus Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer CFRP Materials

Download or read book Fundamental Behavior of Steel Concrete Composite Beams Strengthened with High Modulus Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer CFRP Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for a cost-effective, durable repair system that can be used for the repair and strengthening of steel bridges. Recently, high modulus carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been developed with a modulus of elasticity approximately two times greater than that of steel. Externally bonded high modulus CFRP materials have successfully been used to increase the elastic stiffness and ultimate capacity of steel-concrete composite beams However, since the technology is relatively new, the detailed behavior of steel bridge members strengthened with high modulus CFRP is not yet well understood. The current research investigates three aspects of the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams in detail. An experimental program was conducted to investigate the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams strengthened with high modulus CFRP materials. In the first phase of the study the behavior under overloading conditions was investigated. In the second phase of the research, the fatigue durability of the system was examined. In the third phase, the possible presence of shear-lag between the steel beam and the CFRP materials was investigated in detail. An analytical model was developed which can be used to determine the ultimate capacity and elastic stiffness increase for steel beams strengthened with high modulus CFRP materials. Additionally, a set of criteria are proposed which can be used to determine the allowable increase in the live load level for steel beams strengthened with high modulus CFRP materials.
