Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brick and Block Masonry - From Historical to Sustainable Masonry contains the keynote and semi-keynote lectures and all accepted regular papers presented online during the 17th International Brick and Block Masonry Conference IB2MaC (Kraków, Poland, July 5-8, 2020). Masonry is one of the oldest structures, with more than 6,000 years of history. However, it is still one of the most popular and traditional building materials, showing new and more attractive features and uses. Modern masonry, based on new and modified traditional materials and solutions, offers a higher quality of life, energy savings and more sustainable development. Hence, masonry became a more environmentally friendly building structure. Brick and Block Masonry - From Historical to Sustainable Masonry focuses on historical, current and new ideas related to masonry development, and will provide a very good platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, and for learning about new materials and technologies related to masonry structures. The book will be a valuable compendium of knowledge for researchers, representatives of industry and building management, for curators and conservators of monuments, and for students.

Book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by N. Uddin and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low velocity impact response of plain autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and FRP/AAC sandwich panels has been investigated. The structural sandwich panels composed of a FRP/AAC combination have shown excellent characteristics in terms of high strength and high stiffness-to-weight ratios. In addition to having adequate flexural and shear properties, the behavior of FRP/AAC sandwich panels needs to be investigated when subjected to impact loading. During service, the structural members in the building structures are subjected to impact loading that varies from object-caused impact, blast due to explosions, to high velocity impact of debris during tornados, hurricanes, or storms. Low velocity impact (LVI) testing serves as a means to quantify the allowable impact energy that the structure is able to withstand and to assess the typical failure modes encountered during this type of loading. The objectives of this chapter are: to study the response of plain AAC and CFRP/AAC sandwich structures to low velocity impact and to assess the damage performance of the panels; to study the effect of FRP laminates on the impact response of CFRP/AAC panels; to study the effect of the processing method (hand layup versus VARTM) and panel stiffness on the impact response of the hybrid panels. Impact testing was conducted using an Instron drop-tower testing machine. Experimental results showed a significant influence of CFRPs laminates on the energy absorbed and peak load of the CFRP/AAC panels. Further, a theoretical analysis was conducted to predict the energy absorbed by the CFRP/AAC sandwich panel using the energy balance model, and the results found were in good accordance with the experimental ones.

Book Compressive Strength of Concrete

Download or read book Compressive Strength of Concrete written by Pavel Krivenko and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete made using mineral cements, the raw materials which on earth are practically endless, is known as one of the oldest building materials and during the last decades of the twentieth century has become a dominant building material for general use. At the same time, the requirements of the quality of concrete and its performance properties, in particular compressive strength, durability, economical efficiency, and low negative impact of its manufacture on the environment have not yet been completely met. Bearing these requirements in mind, researchers and engineers worldwide are working on how to satisfy these requirements. This book has been written by researchers and experts in the field and provides the state of the art on recent progress achieved on the properties of concrete, including concrete in which industrial by-products are utilized. The book is dedicated to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.

Download or read book American Environmentalism written by J. Michael Martinez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 1227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the natural environment and promoting sustainability have become important objectives, but achieving such goals presents myriad challenges for even the most committed environmentalist. American Environmentalism: Philosophy, History, and Public Policy examines whether competing interests can be reconciled while developing consistent, coherent, effective public policy to regulate uses and protection of the natural environment without destroying the national economy. It then reviews a range of possible solutions. The book delves into key normative concepts that undergird American perspectives on nature by providing an overview of philosophical concepts found in the western intellectual tradition, the presuppositions inherent in neoclassical economics, and anthropocentric (human-centered) and biocentric (earth-centered) positions on sustainability. It traces the evolution of attitudes about nature from the time of the Ancient Greeks through Europeans in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the American Founders, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and up to the present. Building on this foundation, the author examines the political landscape as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), industry leaders, and government officials struggle to balance industrial development with environmental concerns. Outrageous claims, silly misrepresentations, bogus arguments, absurd contentions, and overblown prophesies of impending calamities are bandied about by many parties on all sides of the debate—industry spokespeople, elected representatives, unelected regulators, concerned citizens, and environmental NGOs alike. In lieu of descending into this morass, the author circumvents the silliness to explore the crucial issues through a more focused, disciplined approach. Rather than engage in acrimonious debate over minutiae, as so often occurs in the context of "green" claims, he recasts the issue in a way that provides a cohesive look at all sides. This effort may be quixotic, but how else to cut the Gordian knot?
