Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author—and his dog—more woofs of wisdom In his first book, John O'Hurley wrote of the many life lessons he'd learned from dogs' lessons that carried him from the New England woods of his childhood to his life today as an award-winning actor, composer, and writer amidst the bright lights of Hollywood. Now, in Before Your Dog Can Eat Your Homework, First You Have to Do It, John once again finds himself seeking the wisdom of a canine companion. After years of parenting pets, last December, he became a father to his first child, William. Along with the many new joys of being a dad, John faced a new set of challenges' and it was Scoshi, his wizened white Maltese and faithful confidant for nearly two decades, who, at every turn, pointed the way. At once poignant, profound, and laugh-out-loud funny, this book is a one-of-a-kind celebration of the joys of parenting pets and children alike, and further testament to the enduring wisdom of man's best friend.

I-15 for two months waiting for the car he knew would bring him home --Eddie, the beagle, who walked 450 miles over four months to reunite with disabled four-year-old Jimmy, inspiring the boy to work harder on his own recovery. Four-Legged Miracles will tug on readers' heartstrings, but it will also discuss common reasons dogs disappear, how to get a missing dog back faster, the dog-human bond, and the science behind some of the amazing journeys these dogs endure. Chock-full of happy endings, Four-Legged Miracles lends insight into dogs' hearts and minds, and is a treat for any animal lover.

Book excerpt: "Gandhi once said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way that its animals are treated." How people regard older animals is especially revealing. Beautiful Old Dogs honors our senior best friends and explores their current state of care and custody. This book is inspired by the exquisite photography of Garry Gross, a noted fashion photographer during the 60s, 70s and 80s who, after becoming a highly successful dog trainer in New York City, turned his camera lens towards dogs. Gross, along with Victoria Stilwell from Animal Planet's It's Me or the Dog, founded Dog Trainers of New York in 2002, and became devoted to highlighting the plight and value of senior dogs. "The older the better," Gross said. "Dogs with soul in their eyes." The book also includes a practical resource guide for those wishing to learn more about caring for senior dogs. David Tabatsky, the co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul's The Cancer Book: 101 Stories of Courage, Support and Love, has curated a selection of moving, insightful, and uplifting essays by a range of writers, with contributions from Anna Quindlen, Ally Sheedy, Dean Koontz, Marlo Thomas, and many more. Book Audiobooks as Artifacts

  • Author : David Seinberg
  • Publisher : Common Ground Research Networks

Download or read book Audiobooks as Artifacts written by David Seinberg and published by Common Ground Research Networks. This book was released on 2024-06-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their ever-evolving popularity notwithstanding, audiobooks remain a rather undertheorized phenomenon. The prevailing handful of existing studies seem to have adopted an inherently historicist approach, which fails to identify and scrutinize their aesthetic importance. Thus, rather than regarding them as mere recorded ‘versions’ of existing literary works, this book explores them as the unique products of a hitherto undefined artistic genre. As performance-based aural artefacts, the very act of listening to them is rendered an aesthetic experience in its own right. By effectively embracing an interdisciplinary approach and introducing a set of aesthetic questions and philosophical conundrums (ignited by a paradigmatic application of the New Institutional Theory of Art), this study establishes a new aesthetic category—which, in turn, not only classifies audiobooks as artworks to all intents and purposes, but also generates the criteria and parameters for evaluating their merit. Since the proof of the proverbial pudding is purportedly in the eating, in surveying a series of concrete case studies—each highlighting different degrees of complexities—this study mainly examines first-person narratives as the most natural medium for the aesthetics of the audiobook. As such, the investigation herein provides one with comparative close listenings, appropriately analyzing and debating their aesthetic properties. Finally, in exploring what this study identifies as one’s informed intuition and its role in the craft of casting audiobooks, this study also proposes a new understating of how aesthetic appreciation works in action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By breaking free from our misperceptions about what it means to be an adult, we can reshape our world and become harbingers of grace. “In our desire to grow up, mature, become adults, we become enamored with who we are supposed to be. When we have finally ‘grown up’ we realize much of who we really are has been left behind or buried under various masks and roles we play. But the knowledge of who we truly are never leaves us. To reclaim our selfhood, we must grow up again and consciously embrace all that it means to be childlike.” —from Chapter 12, “It Takes a Long Time to Become Young” By restoring the childlike ways of humility, trust, awe, wonder, playfulness and more, we can recover a fuller picture of what it means to be human. This unique spiritual resource explores what Jesus may have meant when he said, “Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” It addresses our modern misperceptions regarding the nature of maturity and the common coping mechanisms—distrust, guardedness, insecurity, judgmental thinking—we acquire, and feel we require, in adulthood. Along with the wisdom of ancient and modern spiritual luminaries, this book provides over twenty-five spiritual practices to help us cultivate the childlike ways of attention, self-awareness, joy and resilience in our inner lives as well as in our relationships with others.

Book Everybody Fights

Book excerpt: A USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller! Learn how to fight better and end your arguments with your partner feeling closer, more loved, and better understood. We take our cars in for oil changes. We mow our lawns and pull weeds. Why don't we do maintenance on our marriages? This relationship is the most important one we will ever have, so why not get better at it? For the last several years, Penn and Kim Holderness of The Holderness Family have done the hard maintenance and the research to learn how to fight better. With the help of their marriage coach Dr. Christopher Edmonston, they break down their biggest (and in some cases, funniest) fights. How did a question about chicken wings turn into a bra fight (no, not a bar fight or a bra fight)? How did a roll of toilet paper lead to tears, resentment, and a stint in the guest bedroom? With their trademark sense of humor and complete vulnerability, Penn and Kim share their 10 most common Fight Fails and how to combat them. Throughout the book, they offer scripts for how to start, continue, and successfully close hard conversations. Couples will emerge equipped to engage and understand, not do battle—and maybe laugh a little more along the way. In Everybody Fights, couples will learn how to: Use "magic words" for healthy conflict resolution Address unspoken and unrealistic expectations Banish the three Ds of unhealthy communication—distraction, denial, and delay Carry individual baggage while helping your partner deal with theirs Penn and Kim want you to know you're not alone. Everybody fights. Marriage is messy. Marriage is work. But marriage is worth it. Fight for it!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Dog Ate My Homework is the first collection of Bruce Lansky’s own poetry. In this book, Lansky introduces us to: -a “too friendly” dog who should be using Scope -a teacher who resembles her students in her avoidance of homework -a kid who thinks his cat isn’t smart because it won’t come when called and won’t shake, beg or fetch -a young “Romeo” who “climbed up the door and opened the stairs” after his first kiss - a youngthter with a looth tooth who tellth a painful thtory about a bike cwath -kids who start wishing their horrible old cook would come back after a new gourmet chef is hired -two siblings would like their parents to know about each other Lansky also offers a practical lesson on how to delay your bedtime and a sure cure for thumbsucking. This book also includes several, charming fill-in-the blank poems perfect for morning announcements on the school P.A. plus some generic New Year’s resolutions you can use in a pinch.
