Book excerpt: The publisher presents the entirety of Beethoven's Letters in two volumes, inclusive of the musical staves which the legendary composer appended to his personal correspondences. The first volume of Ludwig van Beethoven's letters covers the period from his youth as an ambitious and fledgling young talent living in Vienna, to his peak years wherein he saw musical composition not merely as a career, but as his life's purpose. Early in his career, Beethoven's writings are divided between professional correspondence between members of the aristocracy who sponsored him; and tender missives to young women whom he desired to court; and a few close and valued friends. Reliant on the patronage of the wealthy, it is during this period that Beethoven penned many fine works. Beethoven was however hampered by romantic failures owing to his lower social class - Josephine Brunsvik, an aristocratic woman who reciprocated his advances, is eventually forced to break off the relationship. Later, in confessing his feelings to his 'Immortal Beloved', it is apparent that Beethoven suffered with depression. We see in Beethoven's early correspondences a sensitive and emotional soul, well-versed in the courtly manners of the day. When talking with friends, he demonstrates a keen and sometimes jocular sense of humor, which the translator of this edition - Lady Grace Jane Wallace - did her utmost to maintain in English. This volume closes on a more uplifting note; the mature Beethoven has settled upon his life's purpose of musical composition. His love of music's sublimity has led him to compose soaring and bold symphonic works. However, he also becomes embroiled in a legal struggle regarding his nephew Carl.

Book excerpt: Beethoven's Letters 1790-1826, Volume 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven Excerpt im to know it) he is over-fatigued by the injudicious distribution of his lesson hours. Unluckily it is not easy to alter this; so pray, however strict you may be, show him every indulgence, which will, I am sure, have also a better effect on Carl under such unfavorable circumstances. With respect to his playing with you, when he has finally acquired the proper mode of fingering, and plays in right time, and gives the notes with tolerable correctness, you must only then first direct his attention to the mode of execution; and when he is sufficiently advanced, do not stop his playing on account of little mistakes, but only point them out at the end of the piece. Although I have myself given very little instruction, I have always followed this system, which quickly forms a musician; and this is, after all, one of the first objects of art, and less fatiguing both to master and scholar. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven's correspondences reveal much about his personality, inner struggles, and love of music. This edition appends the musical staves appended by the great composer to his letters. The second volume of Beethoven's letters begin with the composer in maturity. In these later years, several of his most accomplished and beautiful musical works were completed. It is clear from these written correspondences that music occupies a greater place in Beethoven's life; more frequently, he appends samples of and discusses musical phrasing and notation, giving readers insight into his methods of composition. Although Beethoven concealed his increasing deafness for years, it eventually became public knowledge. His ability to compose beautiful music was however undiminished, and demonstrated in concerts around Europe. Thought remarkable by the public, Beethoven nevertheless lived in quite modest circumstances, but felt deep appreciation for the acclaim with which he was held by various orchestral and philharmonic societies. In personal matters, Beethoven demonstrates great affection for his nephew Carl, whom he had won custody in the courts. However, the letters also reveal an irascible and controlling side to the composer: insistent that his nephew - whom he came to view as a son - be musically trained, the news that Carl's musical talents are negligible is a blow. Carl's subsequent intention to pursue a military career strains their relationship further. Despite these trials, Beethoven had the support of friends until the very end; his illness worsening, he was able to borrow money to pay for care, but it soon became clear he was on his deathbed. The great composer's final words comprise a short will, in which his estate is bequeathed to Carl. Ludwig van Beethoven died the next day, as a thunderstorm raged outside his apartment.

Book The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven Complete

Download or read book The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven Complete written by Alexander Wheelock Thayer and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 1474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If for no other reasons than because of the long time and monumental patience expended upon its preparation, the vicissitudes through which it has passed and the varied and arduous labors bestowed upon it by the author and his editors, the history of Alexander Wheelock Thayer’s Life of Beethoven deserves to be set forth as an introduction to this work. His work it is, and his monument, though others have labored long and painstakingly upon it. There has been no considerable time since the middle of the last century when it has not occupied the minds of the author and those who have been associated with him in its creation. Between the conception of its plan and its execution there lies a period of more than two generations. Four men have labored zealously and affectionately upon its pages, and the fruits of more than four score men, stimulated to investigation by the first revelations made by the author, have been conserved in the ultimate form of the biography. It was seventeen years after Mr. Thayer entered upon what proved to be his life-task before he gave the first volume to the world—and then in a foreign tongue; it was thirteen more before the third volume came from the press. This volume, moreover, left the work unfinished, and thirty-two years more had to elapse before it was completed. When this was done the patient and self-sacrificing investigator was dead; he did not live to finish it himself nor to see it finished by his faithful collaborator of many years, Dr. Deiters; neither did he live to look upon a single printed page in the language in which he had written that portion of the work published in his lifetime. It was left for another hand to prepare the English edition of an American writer’s history of Germany’s greatest tone-poet, and to write its concluding chapters, as he believes, in the spirit of the original author. Under these circumstances there can be no vainglory in asserting that the appearance of this edition of Thayer’s Life of Beethoven deserves to be set down as a significant occurrence in musical history. In it is told for the first time in the language of the great biographer the true story of the man Beethoven—his history stripped of the silly sentimental romance with which early writers and their later imitators and copyists invested it so thickly that the real humanity, the humanliness, of the composer has never been presented to the world. In this biography there appears the veritable Beethoven set down in his true environment of men and things—the man as he actually was, the man as he himself, like Cromwell, asked to be shown for the information of posterity. It is doubtful if any other great man’s history has been so encrusted with fiction as Beethoven’s. Except Thayer’s, no biography of him has been written which presents him in his true light. The majority of the books which have been written of late years repeat many of the errors and falsehoods made current in the first books which were written about him. A great many of these errors and falsehoods are in the account of the composer’s last sickness and death, and were either inventions or exaggerations designed by their utterers to add pathos to a narrative which in unadorned truth is a hundredfold more pathetic than any tale of fiction could possibly be. Other errors have concealed the truth in the story of Beethoven’s guardianship of his nephew, his relations with his brothers, the origin and nature of his fatal illness, his dealings with his publishers and patrons, the generous attempt of the Philharmonic Society of London to extend help to him when upon his deathbed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String Quartets in Beethoven’s Europe is the first detailed study of string quartets in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Europe. It brings together the work of nine scholars who explore little-studied aspects of this multi-faceted genre. Together, this book’s chapters deal with compositional responses to Beethoven’s string quartets and the prestige of the genre; varied compositional practices in string quartet writing, with a particular emphasis on texture and performance elements; and the reception of Beethoven’s string quartets ca. 1800. They include discussions of quartets composed for the amateur and connoisseur markets in Beethoven’s Europe; virtuosity, the French Violin School, and the quatuor brillant; the relationship between quartet composers and their audiences during Beethoven’s era; and the cross-pollination of quartet styles in Europe’s musical centers such as Vienna, Paris, and St. Petersburg.
