Book Beet Root Sugar and Cultivation of the Beet Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beet Root Sugar and Cultivation of the Beet Classic Reprint written by E. B. Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beet-Root Sugar and Cultivation of the Beet The experience of Europe in the failure of their supply of cotton, caused by the late war, should teach the United States not to depend too exclusively upon foreign countries for her supply of so necessary an article as Sugar, of which the consumption is about tons, while the production of all kinds within her borders is less than tons; leaving tons to be imported. In case of war with a great maritime power, like England or France, which would, in part at least, prevent importation, sugars would necessarily advance enormously. The emancipation of slaves in the only remaining strongholds of slavery - Cuba and Brazil (which is simply a question of a very few years) -would prob ably, at first, as it has always done elsewhere, diminish the production of sugar in those countries at least fifty per cent. If such should prove to be the case, as this pro duction exceeds tons, the diminution would make so serious an inroad upon the ordinary supplies of the world that prices would materially advance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sugar Beet: Culture, Seed Development, Manufacture, and Statistics The mean summer temperature of these localities is about the same, but the continuation of a semisummer temperature through the winter in southern California greatly favors the growth and manufacture of the beets. In northern Nebraska and South Dakota the beets, which are to be manufactured during the winter time, have to be protected by expensive silos. In southern California and other places similarly situ ated the beets can be protected without any covering, or at most with only a slight covering of leaves or straw. The season for planting in a mild climate is also longer. For instance, in southern California plant-a ing can commence as early as January and continue till June, thus giv ing a beet crop coming continuously into maturity from the 1st of August to the lst of December. In other. Localities the planting must be accomplished in a short time, say from the l0th of May till the 1st of June. Before the first of these dates the ground will be too cold for planting and after the second the season will be. So late as to prevent the maturity of the beets before frost. When the field is properly plowed and subsoiled in the late autumn the farmer will be able to take advantage of the first favorable opportunity in the spring to pre pare the surface of the soil and plant the seed. The civilized nations have become so accustomed to its use as an important food that great inconvenience is experienced if it cannot be had or if the supply is reduced. This has made sugar-producing plants almost as staple as those from which bread is derived. As a result, sugar-beets, in the past century, have won an im portant place among the profitable mom of the temperate zone. In most of the European countries they have been raised extensively, whereas in America their growth has been confined to a comparatively few localities. In re cent years, however, the area has been greatly extended, and increased interest has been taken in establishing a domestic beet-sugar industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sugar Beet, Vol. 23: Devoted to the Cultivation and Utilization of the Sugar Beet; November, 1902 Beet seed preparationu-a very original mode of preparing beet seed before planting consists in submitting them to a thorough brurhing and then to the action of steam during a short period, this being followed by a treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid or any other disinfectant. The brushing has for its main object the removal of any dust and of the portion most attacked by parasites. There are advan tages in resorting to this treatment before the vapor ization, as the dried seed maybe more readily brushed than the moist; furthermore, the brushes do not become clogged with the impurities. The object of the vaporization is to render the mass of seed in a condition that it will rztpidly absorb the chemical agents used in the treatment.' Beet fertilizers.
