Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in Wisconsin Beekeeping returns the largest profit the amount of money and labor invested, of any agricultural pursuit Sometimes the return is as high as five dollars an hour for the time spent with the bees. A thorough knowledge of bees and honey production, however, is necessary before the most profitable results are possible. Fruits and berries, besides many grasses and flowers, depend on the busy bee to distribute the pollen. A few bees kept near an orchard will not only prove profitable as producers of honey, but will also increase the profits of the orchard. Soil and climate influence beekeeping. The length of the growing season often has an important bearing upon the number of kinds of plants producing nectar. On certain types of soil the best nectar producing plants do not thrive. A constant supply of nectar from the honey plants is needed by the bees. If during a part of the summer season the bees cannot collect nectar, the profits are certain to be lowered. The Italian bees are to be preferred as honey makers. Carnolian, Caucassian, and the common black German bees are other races which are not as desirable. Of the two varieties of Italian bees, the leather colored are generally preferred to the five banded or Golden Italians. To winter bees successfully is one of the essentials in beekeeping. Four essentials, sufficient and proper food supply, young fertile queens, plenty of young workers, and ample protection must be supplied. The amount of winter loss depends upon the amount of care taken by the beekeeper. A bee cellar, which is dry, dark, warm, and well ventilated will help keep the bees through the winter without loss, providing the colonies are properly prepared for wintering. There are several bee diseases known in Wisconsin. Paralysis, and sacbrood or pickled brood cause but slight damage. The American and European foul brood are the diseases which are of consequence. The bees that have excited the amazement and wonder of the world as build ers of geometric comb, with all its economy and strength, the bees that make from the nectar of the flowers the honey, that is the superlative of all things sweet and good; have not stopped with these two achievements, but have maintained a marvel with in their home, which, when understood, will amaze us more than ever. The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. In the preparation of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each system as if it were separate. This latter class far outnumbers the former, for most beekeepers have at some time or other tried their hand at rearing queens. Perhaps he had an unusually good queen from which he wished to get stock to head his other colonies, or not always being able to get queens when wanted, he decided to rear his own. Sometimes a large honey producer as Mr. Beaver runs a small queen rearing outfit. Or a beekeeper decides that since queens cost money, it won't cost him anything much but his time to rear his own. The ideal man to rear queens is one with plenty of information on and knowledge of the subject and money enough to be able to complete the job, insofar as he is able to go. Our experiment stations help us along this line. Government experts, bee specialists, bee journals all are of great help and for the most part the costs are small for all this help so that it is within the reach of all.
