Book Point of View in Plays

Download or read book Point of View in Plays written by Dan McIntyre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of how point of view is manifested linguistically in dramatic texts. It examines such issues as how readers process the shifts in viewpoint that can occur within such texts. Using insights from cognitive linguistics, the book aims to explain how the analysis of point of view in drama can be undertaken, and how this is fruitful for understanding textual and discoursal effects in this genre. Following on from a consideration of existing frameworks for the analysis of point of view, a cognitive approach to deixis is suggested as being particularly profitable for explaining the viewpoint effects that can arise in dramatic texts. To expand on the large number of examples discussed throughout the book, the penultimate chapter consists of an extended analysis of a single play. This book is relevant to scholars in a range of areas, including linguistics, literary studies and cognitive science.

Book excerpt: British industry at the start of the New Elizabethan Age was a world leader. The first - British - jet airliner was taking to the skies, the first nuclear power station was under construction at Calder Hall and British firms were pioneering the computer. Our shipyards reigned almost supreme, and from Britain's factories came cars, lorries, buses, heavy machinery, aircraft and locomotives, exported all over the world. Sixty years on, many of these industries and millions of jobs have disappeared, while competitors have flourished. Much of what remains is under foreign ownership. Britain has lost many export markets, and essential goods have to be imported. How did all this happen? Britain's loss of competitiveness has traditionally been blamed on outdated working practices, failure to invest and modernise, poor management, bloody-minded unions, the loss of Empire and the ability of post-war Germany and Japan to rebuild from scratch. All this is true, but the picture is far more complex. The role of Whitehall and successive governments, Britain's relationship with Europe, corporate greed, misjudgement and even suicide, and sheer bad luck all play a part. In Surrender, Nicholas Comfort revisits the past six decades and identifies some of the factors behind the greatest mass extinction since the dinosaurs.

But who knows which coupé was designed by Frua, which limousine by Engel, which station wagon by Opron? For a long time, car design was considered to be anonymous, the designers stood in the shadow of the perception of the design, even though their designs can be found on the roads in millions. This richly illustrated book captures the origin of a profession and maps the development of car design based on a comprehensive introduction and the career biographies of over 200 selected designers who contributed to the design of cars and many different associated products in the USA, Europe, and Japan between 1900 and 2000.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 'Travel Narrative Book of the Year' in 2005 by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW), The Coast Road presents an idiosyncratic and illuminating snapshot of England and what it is to be English today. In this travelogue, award-winning writer Paul Gogarty travels 3,000 miles in a motorhome, exploring intimate coastal communities and ruminating on the future of the English coast. All points of the compass are covered; after an unsettling benediction at Dover's Eastern Docks he travels to Derek Jarman's Dungeness; to rakish Brighton and Madame Rosina's Bournemouth; the mudflats and Arabian sands of the north- west, where he joins a roomful of George Formbys in Blackpool; the now infamous Morcambe Bay; Billy Butlin's Skegness; and a parachuting vicar. The journey comes full circle in the secret creeks of East Anglia. The Coast Road is a warm-hearted tribute to England's coastline written by a romantic spirit who beautifully captures both the idiosyncrasies of the nation and the euphoria of the open road.

Book Bedford Camper Vans and Motorhomes

Download or read book Bedford Camper Vans and Motorhomes written by Martin Watts and published by Crowood Press UK. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedford is a name from British automotive history that became synonymous with quality commercial vehicles. Between 1930 and the late 1980s few companies, large or small, did have at least a couple of Bedfords within their fleet. These were dependable vehicles used by fleet operators all over the UK and beyond. When the new lesiure activity of motorcaravanning became popular in the mid-1950's, it was hardly surprising that converters turned their attention to the Bedford CA light commercial van, which had been unveiled in 1951. The CA and CF ranges were the perfect size for compact camper vans that could nevertheless provide a good level of comfort and luxury. Add in the smaller HA and the later Midi and Rascal models, and Bedford offered a host of attractive options. Here Martin Watts, founder of the Classic Camper Club, tells the complete story of all the Bedford camper and motorhome vehicles.

Book Performativity Politics and the Production of Social Space

Download or read book Performativity Politics and the Production of Social Space written by Michael R. Glass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of performativity have garnered considerable attention within the social sciences and humanities over the past two decades. At the same time, there has also been a growing recognition that the social production of space is fundamental to assertions of political authority and the practices of everyday life. However, comparatively little scholarship has explored the full implications that arise from the confluence of these two streams of social and political thought. This is the first book-length, edited collection devoted explicitly to showcasing geographical scholarship on the spatial politics of performativity. It offers a timely intervention within the field of critical human geography by exploring the performativity of political spaces and the spatiality of performative politics. Through a series of geographical case studies, the contributors to this volume consider the ways in which a performative conception of the "political" might reshape our understanding of sovereignty, political subjectification, and the production of social space. Marking the 20th anniversary of the publication of Judith Butler’s classic, Bodies That Matter (1993), this edited volume brings together a range of contemporary geographical works that draw exciting new connections between performativity, space, and politics.
