Book excerpt: In Becoming Alive and Real, Cherie McCoy depicts the process of Self Acceptance Training, a healing method which delivers insights into the connections between life experiences and the patterns of emotions, tensions and pain which can be held within the body. Utilizing tools and principles she has refined over 47 years of teaching, she describes guiding students in search of understanding, catharsis, and ultimately peace. Along with explaining the philosophy behind her work, Cherie offers real life examples of how Self Acceptance Training can bring physical, emotional and spiritual life changes. In our very intellectual and analytical culture where so much power and credence is given to the mind, we often forget that we are essentially a body, with an ability to think, which separates us from other animals. As we journey into the body's truth, we're exploring a new frontier, and just like the pioneers of history, we don't always know what we will discover. This is an exciting and sometimes scary adventure which is always extremely rewarding. At the end of each foray into these discoveries, the gifts of peace, self confidence, inner strength, and a wondrous connection with our true self emerges.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to be and feel alive and real? How do we become and be alive together? Human beings are uniquely concerned with the question and marvel of what it means to feel alive and real, as well as the lifelong struggle of being alive together. Becoming Alive proffers a psychoanalytic theory of experiences of being alive, acknowledging that analyst and patient, indeed, each of us, are caught up in the larger drama and mystery of being alive. Focusing on the challenge in any psychoanalytic theory to demonstrate the relation between culture, community, and the individual, LaMothe's theory provides a bridge between the three, arguing that organizations of experiences of being alive are inextricably yoked to cultural stories, rituals, and practices. Enlivened by clinical illustrations and examples drawn from wider culture, Becoming Alive brings together psychoanalytic developmental perspectives, infant-parent research, semiotics, and philosophy in providing a comprehensive, lucid, and systematic description of subjective and intersubjective experiences of being alive.

Book All American Boys

Download or read book All American Boys written by Jason Reynolds and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. In this New York Times bestselling novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension. A bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? There were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken directly from today’s headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

Book excerpt: A radical revaluation of how contemporary society perceives death—and an argument for how it can make us happy. “He who would teach men to die would teach them to live,” writes Montaigne in Essais, and in How to Die: A Book about Being Alive, Ray Robertson takes up the challenge. Though contemporary society avoids the subject and often values the mere continuation of existence over its quality, Robertson argues that the active and intentional consideration of death is neither morbid nor frivolous, but instead essential to our ability to fully value life. How to Die is both an absorbing excursion through some of Western literature’s most compelling works on the subject of death as well as an anecdote-driven argument for cultivating a better understanding of death in the belief that, if we do, we’ll know more about what it means to live a meaningful life.

Download or read book Being Alive written by Tim Ingold and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology is a disciplined inquiry into the conditions and potentials of human life. Generations of theorists, however, have expunged life from their accounts, treating it as the mere output of patterns, codes, structures or systems variously defined as genetic or cultural, natural or social. Building on his classic work The Perception of the Environment, Tim Ingold sets out to restore life to where it should belong, at the heart of anthropological concern. Being Alive ranges over such themes as the vitality of materials, what it means to make things, the perception and formation of the ground, the mingling of earth and sky in the weather-world, the experiences of light, sound and feeling, the role of storytelling in the integration of knowledge, and the potential of drawing to unite observation and description. Our humanity, Ingold argues, does not come ready-made but is continually fashioned in our movements along ways of life. Starting from the idea of life as a process of wayfaring, Ingold presents a radically new understanding of movement, knowledge and description as dimensions not just of being in the world, but of being alive to what is going on there.

Book The Supernatural Media Virus

Download or read book The Supernatural Media Virus written by Rahel Sixta Schmitz and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, the virus and the network metaphors have become increasingly popular, finding application in a broad range of everyday discourses, academic disciplines, and fiction genres. In this book, Rahel Sixta Schmitz defines and discusses a trope recurring in Gothic fiction: the supernatural media virus. This trope comprises the confluence of the virus, the network, and a deep, underlying media anxiety. This study shows how Gothic narratives such as House of Leaves or The Ring feature the supernatural media virus to negotiate as well as actively shape imaginations of the network society and the dangers of a globalized, technologized world.

Book The Way to Become a Person in Heaven While Living

Download or read book The Way to Become a Person in Heaven While Living written by Woo Myung and published by Cham books LLC. This book was released on 2024-08-31 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate answer to the questions about the reason and purpose of our existence. Why are we born into this world, and what do we live for? Teacher Woo Myung provides the answer to this deep question through his book, The reason why humans are born is to achieve human completion and to become Truth. It is not for the purpose of just making money or having a comfortable life. In other words, he is saying that one needs to know why he is born into this world and where he goes when he dies. One has to live the life of Truth, know the principle and meaning behind life and death. Life of Truth is the life of great liberation without any concerns or worries. It is the life lived following the flow of the universe just as nature does. It is natural for anyone to have a wishful thinking about living such a life. However, if you are not able to achieve it in reality, what use would it be? Teacher Woo Myung talks about ‘how to’ become a ‘person in Heaven’ in this reality that we are living in at the moment, ‘while living’. He talks about living the life of nature’s flow. This is possible because even though we are currently living with stress, having become enslaved to materials, fame, and desires, our original self is nothing like this. Which means that you can become a complete existence if you discard the self-centered human mind and recover your true nature. The ultimate happiness and life of Heaven can be achieved by becoming the mind of Truth while one is alive. The author earnestly convey throughout the book that Heaven is not a place one goes to after death, that one should go while living. Such a level of consciousness cannot be understood from within human conceptions or knowledges, not to mention one cannot reach that level. It can only be achieved through the process of emptying the mind, through self-reflection and enlightenment. With this method it is possible for everyone to achieve it regardless of their ethnicity, level of knowledge, or any other background. Perhaps, it was said that Truth is truly fair because this process that is taking place now is open to everyone. The life that all humankind has been yearning and dreaming for is given to all of us who are living at this moment, not just to a special someone in a distant future.

Book The Velveteen Rabbit at 100

Download or read book The Velveteen Rabbit at 100 written by Lisa Rowe Fraustino and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Kelly Blewett, Claudia Camicia, Alisa Clapp-Itnyre, Lisa Rowe Fraustino, Elisabeth Graves, Karlie Herndon, KaaVonia Hinton, Holly Blackford Humes, Melanie Hurley, Kara K. Keeling, Maleeha Malik, Claudia Mills, Elena Paruolo, Scott T. Pollard, Jiwon Rim, Paige Sammartino, Adrianna Zabrzewska, and Wenduo Zhang First published in 1922 to immediate popularity, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams has never been out of print. The story has been adapted for film, television, and theater across a range of mediums including animation, claymation, live action, musical, and dance. Frequently, the story inspires a sentimental, nostalgic response—as well as a corresponding dismissive response from critics. It is surprising that, despite its longevity and popularity, The Velveteen Rabbit has inspired a relatively thin dossier of serious literary scholarship, a gap that this volume seeks to correct. While each essay can stand alone, the chapters in "The Velveteen Rabbit" at 100 flow in a coherent sequence from beginning to end, showing connections between readings from a wide array of critical approaches. Philosophical and cultural studies lead us to consider the meaning of love and reality in ways both timeless and temporal. The Velveteen Rabbit is an Anthropocene Rabbit. He is also disabled. Here a traditional exegetical reading sits alongside queering the text. Collectively, these essays more than double the amount of serious scholarship on The Velveteen Rabbit. Combining hindsight with evolving sensibilities about representation, the contributors offer thirteen ways of looking at this Rabbit that Margery Williams gave us—ways that we can also use to look at other classic storybooks.

Download or read book The Fish in the Sea is Not Thirsty written by Osho and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fish in the sea is not thirsty -- but man is. Man lives in God, and is absolutely unaware of it. Man is born in God, breathes in God, and one day will dissolve in God. MAN IS GOD, made of the stuff called God, and yet completely oblivious of the fact. The fish is not thirsty in the sea, but man is. God is the sea -- God surrounds you, within and without. All that is is divine. God is not a person: God is the presence that is overflowing everywhere in all directions. The radiance, the beauty of existence, the splendour, the majestic, the miraculous, the mysterious -- the whole magic of life is God. God has not to be worshipped: God has to be lived. And to live God you need not go anywhere -- you are already in him. To live God you need not cultivate any character. God is already the case. He is your consciousness.
