Download or read book Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal written by Jeanette Winterson and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller: The “magnificent” memoir by one of the bravest and most original writers of our time—“A tour de force of literature and love” (Vogue). One of the New York Times’ “50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years” Jeanette Winterson’s bold and revelatory novels have established her as a major figure in world literature. Her internationally best-selling debut, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, tells the story of a young girl adopted by Pentecostal parents, and has become a staple of required reading in contemporary fiction classes. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is a “singular and electric” memoir about a life’s work to find happiness (The New York Times). It is a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser, waiting for Armageddon; about growing up in a north England industrial town now changed beyond recognition; about the universe as a cosmic dustbin. It is the story of how a painful past, rose to haunt the author later in life, sending her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. It is also a book about the power of literature, showing how fiction and poetry can form a string of guiding lights, or a life raft that supports us when we are sinking. Witty, acute, fierce, and celebratory, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is a tough-minded story of the search for belonging—for love, identity, home, and a mother.

Gwen is one of 140 children who were enrolled at a boarding school in Chefoo when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded China. Life in the camp is difficult. There is not enough food or water, and even the children are forced to do hard labor. But Miss E., one of their teachers from Chefoo, has come up with an unusual scheme: she will follow the Girl Guide Code, treating Gwen and her friends as if they are part of a Girl Guide troop. Girl Guides promise not only to stay positive in the most challenging situations but also to do good turns, meaning they must be kind to others without any expectation of reward. Gwendolyn hopes that when she grows up, she will be as courageous and optimistic as Miss E. But then Gwen learns that Miss E. is not as full of answers as she seems, and she realizes that in order to protect a friend, she will have to do something that could never be considered a good turn.
Download or read book The Jealous Bridesmaid written by Gloria Marie Horne-Ingram and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is an exciting book to read and the genre is between a thriller and a mystery, because of all the twists and turns that this story takes you through. The story talks about everyday life and what really goes on in our lives. It touched upon all aspects of life and the ups and downs and the heart aches of life, death and deceptions. My husband Victor believed in me enough that he gave me this title and encouraged me to write this book. He said, Write a novel surrounding this title, The Jealous Bridesmaid. At first I laughed and I thought to myself that he was crazy, because I didnt know the first thing about writing a book. I eventually sat down at my computer and started typing and to my surprise, I wrote this novel. The Jealous Bridesmaid is based upon two best friends Rozelle Grant and Rachel Smith. Rozelle was the bad girl with good looks and lots of drama in her life and Rachel was the strong silence type; she was a spiritual woman but very bossy. The girls grow up together in a small rural town in Georgia. Rozelle Grant was a very pretty and a perky young lady with lots of problems with multi personalities, because she was envious of every body, especially Rachel. Rozelle tried to destroy Rachels relationship with her fiance Raymond. Rozelle would use whatever means possible to get what she wanted, even if she had to kill to get it. Rachel Smith came from a large family that lived on a farm. After high school, she went to college on a four year basketball scholarship to Georgia University. After college she move back to Parkerville and got a job working at a Tire Plant, where she was a supervisor. Her fiance Raymond also worked there, as a supervisor but in another department. Rachel was the rock and the support system for her large family and everybody depended on her. After dating Raymond for two years, they finally got engaged and were planning to wed, but Rozelle would try to do everything possible to destroy that relationship and to make sure that the wedding never took place. My first novel is based in a country setting, a rural town in the south of Georgia. This novel touched upon real life scenarios, such as funerals, drowning, deaths, wedding, and births. It also touches upon every aspect of life and the imagination as well. Christianity, relationships, breakups, make ups, heart aches, homosexually, bullying, voodoo rituals and lots more. There are situations about obesity, hypertension, high risk pregnancy and the outcome of what happen when it is not treated. Some parts of this story makes you laugh, cry and think about life as a whole. I compiled a lot of different situations together to come up with a great book. Readers will definitely be intrigued with my novel and cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Book excerpt: "It was 12 years ago when I moved to Mexico, leaving my comfortable, familiar life and community, driving by myself to start a new life in a foreign country. Some sort of bravado or naivete or, as my friends would say later, courage, allowed me to pooh-pooh concerns about all the unknowns- culture, language, customs-and head off nonetheless."And so begins one of the more than two dozen essays in this anthology, written by "regular" women about their "regular" lives and how they decided to change everything and move to Mexico. In simple, engaging words straight from the heart, the contributors to Why We Left share their plans and preparations, hardships and challenges, joys and satisfactions as their journeys to new lives in Mexico unfold.
