Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s, Indonesia has undergone a radical program of administrative decentralization and neoliberal reforms. In Methods of Desire, author Aurora Donzelli explores these changes through an innovative perspective—one that locates the production of neoliberalism in novel patterns of language use and new styles of affect display. Building on almost two decades of fieldwork, Donzelli describes how the growing influence of transnational lending agencies is transforming the ways in which people desire and voice their expectations, intentions, and entitlements within the emergent participatory democracy and restructuring of Indonesia’s political economy. She argues that a largely overlooked aspect of the Era Reformasi concerns the transition from a moral regime centered on the expectation that desires should remain hidden to a new emphasis on the public expression of individuals’ aspirations. The book examines how the large-scale institutional transformations that followed the collapse of the Suharto regime have impacted people’s lives and imaginations in the relatively remote and primarily rural Toraja highlands of Sulawesi. A novel concept of the individual as a bundle of audible and measurable desires has emerged, one that contrasts with the deep-rooted reticence toward the expression of personal preferences. The spreading of foreign discursive genres such as customer satisfaction surveys, training sessions, electoral mission statements, and fundraising auctions, and the diffusion of new textual artifacts such as checklists, flowcharts, and workflow diagrams are producing forms of citizenship, political participation, and moral agency that contrast with the longstanding epistemologies of secrecy typical of local styles of knowledge and power. Donzelli’s long-term ethnographic study examines how these foreign protocols are being received, absorbed, and readapted in a peripheral community of the Indonesian archipelago. Combining a telescopic perspective on our contemporary moment with a microscopic analysis of conversational practices, the author argues that the managerial forms of political rationality and the entrepreneurial morality underwriting neoliberal apparatuses proliferate through the working of small cogs, that is, acts of speech. By examining these concrete communicative exchanges, she sheds light on both the coherence and inconsistency underlying the worldwide diffusion of market logic to all domains of life.

Now orphaned, Alice finds herself thrust into the care of her only living relative: her tormented and alcoholic uncle, Robin. As the play oscillates between unyielding despair and uproarious comedy, Robin's turbulent past as a once-celebrated comedian seeks to raze the meek cuffs of their intertwined fates. Further calamity ensues when Robin's ex-wife meets a grim fate within his home, amidst a series of comically unfortunate events. The media frenzy surrounding this new bereavement compounds the duo's distress, testing their resilience and straining their fragile bond. As Robin's innocence is vindicated, questions loom over the future of his relationship with Alice. While he grapples with his own demons, Alice is forced into premature adulthood, wrestling with unhealed wounds and unanswered questions. In a world fraught with adversity, The Comedian poses a haunting question: Will Alice summon the strength to defy despair's relentless grip, or will she succumb to the darkness that threatens to consume all around her?

Book excerpt: A Peculiar Peril is a head-spinning epic about three friends on a quest to protect the world from a threat as unknowable as it is terrifying, from the Nebula Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer. Jonathan Lambshead stands to inherit his deceased grandfather’s overstuffed mansion—a veritable cabinet of curiosities—once he and two schoolmates catalog its contents. But the three soon discover that the house is filled with far more than just oddities: It holds clues linking to an alt-Earth called Aurora, where the notorious English occultist Aleister Crowley has stormed back to life on a magic-fueled rampage across a surreal, through-the-looking-glass version of Europe replete with talking animals (and vegetables). Swept into encounters with allies more unpredictable than enemies, Jonathan pieces together his destiny as a member of a secret society devoted to keeping our world separate from Aurora. But as the ground shifts and allegiances change with every step, he and his friends sink ever deeper into a deadly pursuit of the profound evil that is also chasing after them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When gallery owner Nellie, a giving yet neurotic New Yorker, brings together the mismatched cast of characters in the opening of Ryan Whittaker's debut, a phallic show, little does she know that she is setting the scene for odd and unpredictable relationships, much like Shakespeare in Midsummer Night's Dream. The frenzied, magical mix-up is an outrageous farce with a deep moral message: there is a RIGHT place for everyone in this world and love and friendship cement us in it. The Art of Change is a funny, smooth reading romance, which deals with bridging differences in gender, education, social milieu, in an insane but pragmatic, modern fairytale, set in New York City. The twists of the plot are written without an ounce of cynicism but simply acknowledging that life is neither here nor there, neither black or white and all can be dealt with in real friendship and love.

She is repeatedly denied promotions while younger, less-qualified employees are given the higher-paying jobs for which she applies. After being harassed by some of her female coworkers, Aurora files a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and is wrongfully terminated from her job. The backstabbing, lying, and underhanded tactics used by Executive Director Gary Davis and his "band of idiots" are not just unnerving, but are proof positive of the lows to which people will stoop to make another's life miserable. Aurora's immediate supervisor, Lou Ann Houser, is not a bright woman, and her scheming ways just might come back to haunt her once the case reaches the courtroom. Aurora's lawyer is determined to prove to the court the real personalities of the people in management. Will Aurora have the personal strength to stand up and fight for her rights?
