Book Estonia

Download or read book Estonia written by Jean-Jacques Subrenat and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the span of only seventy years, Estonia first proclaimed its independence, was occupied and deprived of its sovereignty, saw many of its citizens deported, and yet managed to recover its independence. How did this small nation keep its language and traditions alive during half a century of occupation, and how did it maintain such a vivid sense of identity? For the first time in English, this book gives a comprehensive view of the events which shaped the destiny of contemporary Estonia. The Editor, Jean-Jacques Subrenat, has called upon an unusually broad spectrum of the best experts (in history, archeology, political science, genetics, literature), but also on some of the leaders who took part in the rebuilding of Estonia, to offer more than a history, rather a unique testimony on a nation reborn. Estonia: Identity and Independence provides rare insight into the many aspects of a country whose location in Northern Europe, within the European Union, and as a NATO ally, but also as a close neighbour of Russia, deserves the attention of scholars, journalists, and informed readers today. This volume includes a thorough chronology of Estonia (from prehistory to accession to the European Union), and a brief c.v. of each co-author. Estonia: Identity and Independence is also available in three other languages (A. Bertricau is the pen-name of Jean-Jacques Subrenat, the initiator and Editor of this book): Estonian: 1st and 2nd edition: A. Bertricau, "Eesti identiteet ja iseseisvus," published by Avita in Tallinn, 2001 and 2002; Russian: A. Bertricau, "Samoopredelenie i nezavissimost' Estonii," published by Avita in Tallinn, August 2001; French: A. Bertricau, "Estonie, identite et independance," published by L'Harmattan in Paris, November 2001.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia is a small country located in Northern Europe. It is situated on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, bordered by Russia to the east, Latvia to the south, and the Gulf of Finland to the north. Estonia has a population of just over 1.3 million people, with the majority living in the urban areas of Tallinn, the capital and largest city, and Tartu. Estonian is the official language and the country has a strong digital infrastructure, with a majority of its citizens having access to the internet. Estonia has a rich history, with the first known human settlements dating back to around 9,000 BC. The country has been ruled by various powers throughout history, including the Danish, German, Swedish, and Russian empires. In 1918, Estonia declared its independence from Russia and became a republic. However, during World War II, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union and did not regain its independence until 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then, Estonia has undergone significant economic and political reforms, becoming a member of the European Union and NATO in 2004. Today, Estonia is known for its innovative technology sector, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant cultural scene.

Book Resilient Voices

Download or read book Resilient Voices written by Ramona Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-04 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftermath of World War II sent thousands of Estonian refugees into Europe. The years of Estonian independence (1917-1940) had given them a taste of freedom and so relocation to displaced person (DP) camps in post-war Germany was extremely painful. One way in which Estonians dealt with the chaos and trauma of WWII and its aftermath was through choral singing. Just as song festivals helped establish national identity in 1869, song festivals promoted cultural cohesiveness for Estonians in WWII displaced person camps. A key turning point in hope for the Estonian DPs was the 1947 Augsburg Song Festival, which is the center point of this book. As Estonian DPs dispersed to Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States these choirs and song festivals gave Estonians the resilience to retain their identity and to thrive in their new homes. This history of Estonian WWII DP camp choirs and song festivals is gathered from the stories of many courageous individuals and filled with the tenacious spirit of the Estonian singing culture. This work contributes to an understanding of immigration, identity, and resilience and is particularly important within the field of music regarding music and healing, music and identity, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and music and politics.

Book History Memory and Identity in Post Soviet Estonia

Download or read book History Memory and Identity in Post Soviet Estonia written by Sigrid Rausing and published by Oxford Studies in Social and C. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigrid Rausing describes the changing world of the Estonian Swedes, and the way in which this minority identity was constructed in the various ideologies that have dominated the region since the early twentieth century. In particular she is concerned with the latest of these changes: thepost-Soviet attempt to 'restore' Swedish cultural identity. Rausing touches on a wide range of issues, debates, and insights: the relationship between ideology and form, nationalist and Soviet notions of ethnicity and traditional culture and historically-framed notions of an imagined normality. The ethnographic location for these discussions is a particular former collective farm, now subject to economic decline, the Estonian nation-building ideological project, and new relationships of dependency with Sweden. One of the author's central arguments is that these changes reflect a consciousattempt to 'reform habitus' so as to match that of the local image of the West, but that the location of ethnic culture and many of the operative concepts still reflect the tropes of the Soviet era.
