Book The Light in the Darkness

Download or read book The Light in the Darkness written by Ellen Fisher and published by Loveswept. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ellen Fisher’s charming novel of romance and redemption in colonial Virginia, a tormented widower rediscovers his passion for life with a most unlikely bride. Edward Greyson is one of the most eligible bachelors in the New World—and he couldn’t care less. Haunted by the death of his wife, scornful of female wiles, and completely contemptuous of any attempt to bring happiness into his life, the brooding rogue known as Grey hardly considers himself a catch. And yet, if only to put an end to his sister’s incessant nagging, Grey chooses a new bride after all, albeit one who confounds the expectations of polite society: an ignorant, unkempt, timid young tavern wench. No one knows better than Jennifer Wilton that she isn’t a suitable match for an aristocrat like Grey. And though she can’t begin to explain Grey’s stormy temperament, one thing is sure: Whatever his intentions, the astonishingly handsome stranger saved her from a life of drudgery and cruelty. To repay his kindness, Jenny vows to transform herself into a ravishing, accomplished beauty, the kind of wife who would make him proud—and the kind of woman with whom he might just fall in love. Includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Book The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman

Download or read book The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman written by Andrzej Szczypiorski and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reissued with an introduction by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a stunning and disquieting novel of heroism and cowardice A masterful novel that was a huge bestseller in Europe, The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is a testament to the power of literature. Now with an introduction by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who named it her “favorite book no one else has heard of” in the New York Times, the novel follows Irma Seidenman, a young Jewish widow in Nazi-occupied Warsaw in 1943, who possesses two attributes that can spell the difference between life and death: blue eyes and blond hair. With these features, and a set of false papers, she slips out of the ghetto, passing as the wife of a Polish officer, until one day an informer spots her on the street and drags her off to the Gestapo. At times a dark lament, at others a sly and sardonic thriller, The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is the story of the thirty-six hours that follow Irma's arrest and the events that lead to her dramatic rescue as the last of Warsaw’s Jews are about to meet their deaths in the burning ghetto.

Book Reading Humility in Early Modern England

Download or read book Reading Humility in Early Modern England written by Jennifer Clement and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While humility is not especially valued in modern Western culture, Jennifer Clement argues here, it is central to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century understandings of Christian faith and behavior, and is vital to early modern concepts of the self. As this study shows, early modern literary engagements with humility link it to self-knowledge through the practice of right reading, and make humility foundational to any proper understanding of human agency. Yet humility has received little critical interest, and has often been misunderstood as a false virtue that engenders only self-abjection. This study offers an overview of various ways in which humility is discussed, deployed, or resisted in early modern texts ranging from the explicitly religious and autobiographical prose of Katherine Parr and John Donne, to the more politically motivated prose of Queen Elizabeth I and the seventeenth-century reformer and radical Thomas Tryon. As part of the wider 'turn to religion' in early modern studies, this study seeks to complicate our understanding of a mainstream early modern virtue, and to problematize a mode of critical analysis that assumes agency is always defined by resistance.
