Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beaumarchais and the American Revolution In the winter of 1906 - 1907, the General Society of the Daughters of the Revolution offered a prize of fifty dollars in gold for the best essay which should be submitted on any phase of the American Revolution. The competition was open to members of the class of 1907 in any of our colleges for women. The judges awarded this prize to Blanche Evans Hazard of Radcliffe College, and the gold coins, enclosed in a blue and buff case, were presented to her at the Class Day exercises of the Radcliffe graduates of 1907. By vote of the Society, the accepted essay was to be owned and published by the General Society of the Daughters of the Revolution, and it is herewith given to the public so that the younger and older students of American History may know more of the problems and patriotism of their revolutionary forefathers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beaumarchais and "the Lost Million" A Chapter of the Secret History of the American Revolution To this man our forefathers were told in the early days of the Revolution to look for succor and safety. The more they heard about him the more completely did his position seem a mystery and riddle to them. To their sober and practical minds it was hard to conceive of him as a benefi cent fairy who, unsolicited, was willing to send us millions of dollars' worth of the supplies we most needed to carry on the war, and who, as they were told by Arthur Lee, the earliest American commissioner in Europe, never suggested that he was to be paid for them, but merely hinted that it would be well for Congress to make him certain shipments of tobacco to conceal his transactions from the English. The Americans had no experience of merchants who carried on business in this way. It was not their interest, however, to inquire too closely into the source from which these supplies came, and they were inclined to settle down into the belief that Beaumarchais was a convenient frag-mm for the French government, which had so many reasons for encouraging us in our resistance, and so many more to conceal the aid it was giving us in our struggle with Great Britain. Whatever the Secret Committee or the Committee on Commerce of the old Congress may have thought or suspected, they did not, so long as the military supplies were provided in reasonable abundance, inquire with too much curiosity into their source. They accepted them with thankfulness, not doubting that they would discover in due time to whom they were indebted. Book Frederick William Von Steuben and the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Frederick William Von Steuben and the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by Joseph Beatty Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frederick William Von Steuben and the American Revolution An apology seems scarcely necessary for offering to the reading public at this time a new biography of Baron Frederick William Von Steuben. It frequently happens that one's true place in history is not fixed at or near the period when the events in which he participated occurred, but long after, when the lengthening perspective allows a more mature and better judgment of what the characters were or what they accomplished. This is true especially of the Revolutionary heroes. So far as Washington was concerned there was never any serious doubt as to his position, although even he did not escape the detraction of factions or disappointment of friends. But, like the sun, whose influence is so decided that there could be no question as to it being the controlling factor in holding and regulating the whole solar system, Washington's figure looms so far above all others connected with the Revolution that the superiority so generally accorded him by his contemporaries has only become more evident with each succeeding year. Great, however, as he was in patriotism, enlightened in statesmanship, skilled in military affairs, albeit most of his early experience was in the backwoods, he was but human, and even his most enthusiastic admirers will not claim that he could have brought his wonderful work to a successful issue without the counsel and assistance of the strong and capable men he gathered around hm. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Materials for the History of the American Revolution Two years ago I had occasion to examine certain documents on file in the French archives relating to the American Revolution, the French agency in which can not be exaggerated. I had not read many of them before I came to the conclusion that we were not yet as well informed about that event as we should be, a conclusion fully confirmed by a subsequent examination of the various histories of our country. France furnished a large proportion of the soldiers, arms, officers, and military supplies, nearly the whole of the navy, and most of the credit and money by which the war was successfully terminated. The risk to France was great, the cost enormous - amounting to twelve hundred and eighty million livres - and the effect on the country disastrous, increasing as it did the financial difficulties which led up to the French Revolution. In taking up the cause of the American insurgents France was obliged, in many respects, to control the war, and this necessarily made it a joint operation.
