Book The Last 10 Per Cent

Download or read book The Last 10 Per Cent written by Erica Harper and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criticism that the development sector has not delivered in terms of eliminating extreme poverty, fast-tracking growth and preventing conflict, is neither new nor surprising. In fact, it may be the one thing that scholars, donors and practitioners agree on. While many of these concerns are valid, this book makes a case that the sector is closer to unlocking the gates to more effective and efficient development outcomes than is popularly believed. Specifically, it argues that by overturning a few myths, making better use of evidence and employing some different rules, practitioners, policy specialists and donors can foster the changes in the development architecture that are needed to reach the 10 percent of the world’s population still living in extreme poverty. Engaging, provocative and clear sighted, the book provides insight into interventions around democratic governance, refugee response, counterterrorism, gender mainstreaming, environmental protection and private sector engagement. It is instructive reading for professionals across the development sector, think tanks and NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babatune Olatunji's record album Drums of Passion proclaimed that the time had come for America to recognize Africa's cultural contributions to the music world. Through his many albums and live performances, the Nigerian drummer popularized West African traditional music and spread his message of racial harmony. In this long-awaited autobiography, Olatunji presents his life story and the philosophy that guided him. Olatunji influenced and inspired musicians for more than forty years - from luminaries to music students and the many ordinary people who participated in his drum circles. He writes about rhythm being "the soul of life," and about the healing power of the drum. Ultimately, The Beat of My Drum shows why at the time of his death in 2003, Olatunji had become, according to The New York Times, "the most visible African musician in the United States."

In this fast paced geopolitical journey across America, China, the Middle East and beyond, de Krassell looks at the history of the major empires of the last 150 years (including that of the USA), their achievements, shortcomings and religious failures that all lead to globalization. Learning from the past he posits "interlocalism" as the successor to globalization. This latest book in his Custom Maid series offers a completely revolutionary new approach to contemplating our future and is must read material for anyone with an interest in understanding the political and economic situation now and wanting to see how the future might look.

Book The Beat of My Own Drum

Download or read book The Beat of My Own Drum written by Sheila E. and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Grammy-nominated singer, drummer, and percussionist who is world renowned for her contributions throughout the music industry, a moving memoir about the healing power of music and spiritual growth inspired by five decades of life and love on the stage. She was born Sheila Escovedo in 1957, but the world knows her as Sheila E. She first picked up the drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three, taught by her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo. As the goddaughter of Tito Puente, music was the heartbeat of her family, and despite Sheila's impoverished childhood in Oakland, California, her family stayed strong, inspired by the music they played nightly in their living room. When she was only five, Sheila delivered her first solo performance to a live audience. By nineteen, she had fallen in love with Carlos Santana. By twenty-one, she met Prince at one of her concerts. Sheila E. and Prince would eventually join forces and collaborate for more than two decades, creating hits that catapulted Sheila to her own pop superstardom. The Beat of My Own Drum is both a walk through four decades of Latin and pop music—from her tours with Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Prince, and Ringo Starr to her own solo career. At the same time, it’s also a heartbreaking, ultimately redemptive look at how the sanctity of music can save a person’s life. Having repeatedly endured sexual abuse as a child, Sheila credits her parents, music, and God with giving her the will to carry on and to build a lasting legacy. Rich in musical detail, pop, and Latin music history, this is a fascinating walk through some of the biggest moments in music from the ’70s and ’80s. But as Sheila’s personal story, this memoir is a unique glimpse into a world-famous drummer’s singular life—a treat for both new and longtime fans of Sheila E. And above all, The Beat of My Own Drum is a testament to how the positive power of music has fueled Sheila’s heart and soul—and how it can transform your life as well.

Book The Legal Protection of Women From Violence

Download or read book The Legal Protection of Women From Violence written by Rashida Manjoo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world today, and it permeates every society, at every level. Such violence is considered a systemic, widespread and pervasive human rights violation, experienced largely by women because they are women. Yet at the international level, there is a gap in the legal protection of women from violence. There is currently no binding international convention that explicitly prohibits such violence; or calls for its elimination; or, mandates the criminalisation of all forms of violence against women. This book critically analyses the treatment of violence against women in the United Nations system, and in three regional human rights systems. Each chapter explores the advantages and disadvantages coming from the legal instruments, the work of the monitoring systems, and the resulting findings and jurisprudence. The book proposes that the gap needs to be addressed through a new United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence against Women, or alternatively an Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. A new Convention or Optional Protocol would be part of the transformative agenda that is needed to normatively address the promotion of a life free of violence for women, the responsibility of states to act with due diligence in the elimination of all forms of violence against all women, and the systemic challenges that are the causes and consequences of such violence.

Book Feasting Dragon Starving Eagle

Download or read book Feasting Dragon Starving Eagle written by Peter G. de Krassel and published by CAL Books. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of how America, through its misguided and bankrupt economic, financial and foreign policies and alliances, has allowed China and its citizens to prosper at the expense and suffering of Americans, who are picking up most of the global economic rehabilitation tab. The ongoing domestic, foreign, economic and geopolitical policy failures of career politicians in Washington, D.C., financed by their Wall Street backers and executed by their politically connected, incompetent bureaucrats charged with implementing the congressional and presidential non-starters are graphically analyzed and described. America’s career politicians and corporate titans are blamed directly for their stupid and misguided policies. While America has spent more than $10 billion to $15 billion a month for five years on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and continues to do so China has spent the same amount of money on education, developing new technologies and building state-of-the-art infrastructure relevant to the 21st century. It doesn’t take much to figure out which country made the better investment. The 2008 Beijing Olympics, where China won more gold medals than the U.S., are a reaction on how China has raised its game in the daily global competition for economic, political and sports supremacy, not military. China is not a military threat to America. China and America differ in their geopolitical and domestic approach and how each country’s soldiers must serve their citizens. Two visually poignant pictures of which country uses its armed forces more productively are the images of the People’s Liberation Army helping the victims of the devastating Sichuan earthquake in 2008, and removing the masses of algae from a beach in Qingdao, where the Olympic sailing events took place. What a contrast to America scrambling to find emergency personnel to help out in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. America is now playing catch-up with its economic stimulus package in an effort to continue to be a relevant global inter-local power. America and China can continue to learn from each other as their people and economies become more intertwined. Both countries must join hands to lead the world through climate, economic and political change in the 21st century as true political partners to ensure that the world avoids Armageddon.

Book Spirit Drumming

Download or read book Spirit Drumming written by Gabriel Horn and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt examination of the spiritual power of Native American drumming, including authentic stories, chants, and rituals. Perhaps the first conscious beating of the drum sound occurred as we gestated in the wombs of our mothers. Beat after beat, we grew within the sea of our births, and then we were born into the air of the world—when did we begin to separate from that beat? How long will it be before we hear the beating again? Gabriel Horn, White Deer of Autumn, is an award-winning writer who has provided a nuanced look at Native American culture and spirituality for decades. Now, he shows how drumming can take us back to our true selves and connect us to each other and the earth. Spirit Drumming follows his journey to the drums, including a history of drumming in Native American communities, an investigation of drums as living beings, and an authoritative reckoning on vibration as a conduit for healing. In addition to sharing stories of people he has known who have been affected by the drums, he also provides information on how to integrate other sacred elements in your drumming (such as feathers, cedar, sweetgrass, and tobacco), transcripts of chants you can use in your own practice, and ceremonies for thanksgiving, birth, the harvest, children, and more.

Book The Cries and Appeals of Afghan

Download or read book The Cries and Appeals of Afghan written by Engineer Fazel Ahmed Afghan MSc and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the so-called April 1978 revolution, the killing of President N. M. Taraki by H. Amin and president H. Amin by Russians, and the unjustified open invasion of the Russians in Afghanistan, in 1979, installing Babrak Karmal and Dr. Najib one after the other as their poppets during ten years of atrocities and destruction of Afghanistan, forcing millions of people to leave their motherland to live in Pakistan, Iran, and other parts of the world and more than two million Afghans and 15000 Russians lost their lives the the Russian mission ended and left Afghanistan, via Hairatan, on February 15, 1989, Where president Babrak Karmel was living helplessly in an old container, in deprivation regretting and admitting to a foreign journalist that "relying on foreign powers is a big mistake." Later when he seriously got sick was hospitalized in Russia until he lost his last breath then his body was brought back and buried in honour by family and devoted followers in Hairatan, and then in1996, before the Taliban took over the power in Kabul from another traitor such as president Burhanuddin Rabani, disrespectfully blew up his grave. When they took over, Kabul executed president Dr. Najeebullah and his brother with no respect for human rights. Later two days before the tragedy of September 11, Ahmed Shah Masoud was also mysteriously assassinated in Khwaja Bahawadin, Afghanistan. The irony was after the withdrawal of Soviet troops. Unfortunately, the so-called Mujahideen, Taliban, and the defenders of democracy, such as president Hamed Karzai and President Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the last planned victim of the USA, Britain, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan leaders, didn't learn the lesson from the history. They also became the stooge of foreign powers and did the same things Russia and her puppets had done to our beloved motherland. As a result, the country we are proud of returned to the stone age and lost everything we achieved in the last twenty years. Yes, those bloodsuckers once again did it; I meant on August 15, 2021, they returned the same Taliban from Pakistan who were kicked out as terrorists from Afghanistan in October 2001; shame on them. Thus with my last letter on 21/02/2021, expressing my appeals and warning to the concerned organizations this book is the "END" of the cries and appeals of Engineer Fazel Ahmed Afghan to the world leaders and organizations, started 37 years ago, "BUT NOT ENDED" up to his last breath, on the contrary, will get louder and more vital for unity, peace, justice, and equal rights. Democracy, freedom, and national and territorial sovereignty of his beloved motherland Afghanistan. We should understand that only I and all Afghans can't achieve our Sacred goal because, since the defeat of Communism, the enemies of Islam created a new phenomenon of Islam-o-Phobia to create hatred of Islam throughout the world. Afghanistan is one of the Islamic countries in the south Asian region with lots of underground wealth and a strategic position. Therefore, for all Afghans and Muslim nations, in particular, the Islamic scholars, is necessary to wake up and redefine Islam with a new vision of the social, economic, and political structure of the world as well as the development of new technology and the making of sophisticated arms in the world which were not available 1400 years ago. I understand, and by heart, I believe that the Holy Quran is the last Holly book, adaptable and flexible in all situations up to the end of the world. Therefore, it is the job of all Muslim scholars to wake up and think scholarly with open eyes to define Islam according to the true definition of Sharia, especially respecting other religions and the equal rights between men and women in all aspects of life, given the situation in the 21st century and after. Therefore, the Islamic Conference needs to give a universal adaptable definition and guideline of Islam in vital issues to the United Nations that all Muslim countries should act the same. Furthermore, the Muslim scholars, along with the other non-Muslim scholars, should establish a definition for terrorism, terrorist and the act of terrorism on the surface of the earth and the air. That also should be submitted to the United Nations and be adopted universally. If these two things are adopted, Islam-o-Phobia globally will be stopped. Then, hopefully, peace will prevail globally, especially in Afghanistan and all Muslim countries. Therefore, I seek God’s help to achieve our sacred goals to see peace in the world and an independent, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan in my life.

Book How Educational Ideologies Are Shaping Global Society

Download or read book How Educational Ideologies Are Shaping Global Society written by Joel Spring and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Joel Spring explores three major international educational ideologies that are shaping global society: neo-liberal educational ideology, human rights education, and environmentalism. Neo-liberal ideology reflects a rethinking of nationalist forms of education as the nation-state slowly erodes under the power of a growing global civil society. Traditional nationalist education attempts to mold loyal and patriotic citizens who are emotionally attached to symbols of the state, whereas the goal of neo-liberal educational ideology is to change nationalist education to serve the needs of the global economy. These changes are fueling a clash between the ideas of free-market and consumer-based neo-liberals and those of human rights and environmental educators. Human rights education is concerned with creating activist global citizens. It is rooted in the idea that inherent in human rights doctrines is a collective responsibility to ensure the rights of all people. Environmentalism is the most radical of the ideologies because it rejects the industrial and consumerist paradigm that has dominated most economic thought, including capitalism and communism. Spring synthesizes and analyzes the effect of these educational ideologies on shaping the future of the global society. In the concluding section, he compares the effect of these ideologies on global society with the possibility of a world divided between conflicting civilizations. How Educational Ideologies Are Shaping Global Society: Intergovernmental Organizations, NGOs, and the Decline of the Nation-State features: *a critical exploration of the transition of schooling from a function of the nation-state to a globalized economic and political system; *a discussion of the major organizations and trading blocs shaping the future globalization of educational policies; *an analysis of the major competing global ideologies of education--including national and corporate models that emphasize training workers for a competitive global free market; the worldwide network of human rights and peace educators who are teaching a global set of ethics; and the environmental movement's efforts to create a common set of educational standards for sustainable development and sustainable consumption; and *an exploration of the possible future of global educational policy and school organizations. By integrating a wide range of previously scattered information within a bold new framework for understanding educational ideologies and their impact on the global society, Spring raises important questions for researchers, professionals, and students in history and philosophy of education, educational policy, educational studies, comparative education, multicultural education, curriculum studies, critical media studies, global studies, human rights education, and related areas.

Download or read book Shades of Freedom written by A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few individuals have had as great an impact on the law--both its practice and its history--as A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr. A winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, he has distinguished himself over the decades both as a professor at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard, and as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals. But Judge Higginbotham is perhaps best known as an authority on racism in America: not the least important achievement of his long career has been In the Matter of Color, the first volume in a monumental history of race and the American legal process. Published in 1978, this brilliant book has been hailed as the definitive account of racism, slavery, and the law in colonial America. Now, after twenty years, comes the long-awaited sequel. In Shades of Freedom, Higginbotham provides a magisterial account of the interaction between the law and racial oppression in America from colonial times to the present, demonstrating how the one agent that should have guaranteed equal treatment before the law--the judicial system--instead played a dominant role in enforcing the inferior position of blacks. The issue of racial inferiority is central to this volume, as Higginbotham documents how early white perceptions of black inferiority slowly became codified into law. Perhaps the most powerful and insightful writing centers on a pair of famous Supreme Court cases, which Higginbotham uses to portray race relations at two vital moments in our history. The Dred Scott decision of 1857 declared that a slave who had escaped to free territory must be returned to his slave owner. Chief Justice Roger Taney, in his notorious opinion for the majority, stated that blacks were "so inferior that they had no right which the white man was bound to respect." For Higginbotham, Taney's decision reflects the extreme state that race relations had reached just before the Civil War. And after the War and Reconstruction, Higginbotham reveals, the Courts showed a pervasive reluctance (if not hostility) toward the goal of full and equal justice for African Americans, and this was particularly true of the Supreme Court. And in the Plessy v. Ferguson decision, which Higginbotham terms "one of the most catastrophic racial decisions ever rendered," the Court held that full equality--in schooling or housing, for instance--was unnecessary as long as there were "separate but equal" facilities. Higginbotham also documents the eloquent voices that opposed the openly racist workings of the judicial system, from Reconstruction Congressman John R. Lynch to Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan to W. E. B. Du Bois, and he shows that, ironically, it was the conservative Supreme Court of the 1930s that began the attack on school segregation, and overturned the convictions of African Americans in the famous Scottsboro case. But today racial bias still dominates the nation, Higginbotham concludes, as he shows how in six recent court cases the public perception of black inferiority continues to persist. In Shades of Freedom, a noted scholar and celebrated jurist offers a work of magnificent scope, insight, and passion. Ranging from the earliest colonial times to the present, it is a superb work of history--and a mirror to the American soul.

  • Author : Dan LeRoy
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2022-10-06

Download or read book Dancing to the Drum Machine written by Dan LeRoy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing to the Drum Machine is a never-before-attempted history of what is perhaps the most controversial musical instrument ever invented: the drum machine. Here, author Dan LeRoy reveals the untold story of how their mechanical pulse became the new heartbeat of popular music. The pristine snap of the LinnDrum. The bottom-heavy beats of the Roland 808. The groundbreaking samples of the E-MUSP-1200. All these machines-and their weirder, wilder-sounding cousins-changed composition, recording, and performance habits forever. Their distinctive sounds and styles helped create new genres of music, like hip hop and EDM. But they altered every musical style, from mainstream pop to heavy metal to jazz. Dan LeRoy traces the drum machine from its low-tech beginnings in the Fifties and Sixties to its evolution in the Seventies and its ubiquity in the Eighties, when seemingly overnight, it infiltrated every genre of music. Drum machines put some drummers out of work, while keeping others on their toes. They anticipated virtually every musical trend of the last five decades: sequencing, looping, sampling, and all forms of digital music creation. But the personalities beneath those perfect beats make the story of drum machines a surprisingly human one-told here for the very first time.
