Book Beam Breakup in a Microtron

Book excerpt: In a microtron, the path length change from pass to pass is a fixed multiple of the RF wavelength, and the accelerating system can be reasonably well approximated as a single cavity. Under such circumstances it is possible to derive an analytical formula for the multipass beam breakup threshold current. The threshold current determined by numerical simulations agrees very well with the formula for a machine with a small number of passes. The analytic formula can serve as a useful guide in examining optics designs to improve the BBU threshold.

Book Principles of Charged Particle Acceleration

Download or read book Principles of Charged Particle Acceleration written by Stanley Humphries and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative text offers a unified, programmed summary of the principles underlying all charged particle accelerators — it also doubles as a reference collection of equations and material essential to accelerator development and beam applications. The only text that covers linear induction accelerators, the work contains straightforward expositions of basic principles rather than detailed theories of specialized areas. 1986 edition.

Book Cumulative Beam Breakup in Radio frequency Linacs

Download or read book Cumulative Beam Breakup in Radio frequency Linacs written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytic model of cumulative beam breakup has been developed which is applicable to both low-velocity ion and high-energy electron linear accelerators. The model includes arbitrary velocity, acceleration, focusing, initial conditions, beam-cavity resonances, and variable cavity geometry and spacing along the accelerator. The model involves a continuum approximation'' in which the transverse kicks in momentum imparted by the cavities are smoothed over the length of the linac. The resulting equation of transverse motion is solved via the WKBJ method. Specific examples are discussed which correspond to limiting cases of the solution. 16 refs.

Book Beam Breakup Instability and Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Limits of the Particle Accelerator CBETA

Download or read book Beam Breakup Instability and Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Limits of the Particle Accelerator CBETA written by William Lou and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of Cornell BNL Energy-Recovery-Linac Test Accelerator (CBETA) was completed at Cornell University's Wilson Laboratory in 2019. CBETA is designed to accelerate electrons from 6 MeV to 150 MeV in four linac passes using a single Fixed Field Alternating gradient (FFA) return beamline accepting all energies from 42 to 150 MeV. Energy recovery is achieved by decelerating the beam within the Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities, in which the beam returns energy to the electromagnetic field. Energy recovery allows CBETA to produce a beam current much higher than with conventional storage rings. This thesis focuses on two important limits of CBETA: the beam current limit due to Beam Breakup (BBU) instability and the bunch charge limit due to Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) effects. For BBU, elementary theories are revisited to benchmark the simulation codes. Additional theory regarding the scaling law of the threshold current and the effect of chromaticity are also investigated. For CSR, a new "2-bend" theory has been developed by extending the conventional 1-bend theory using the Lienard-Wiechert formula. The new theory is essential to describe CSR wake propagation when magnets are located close to each other, as in CBETA. These new theories could benefit designs and researches of future ERLs. For both topics, extensive simulations have been performed using the software developed by Cornell University, Bmad.

Book excerpt: We have modeled an induction linac that will accelerate a 4-MeV, 3-kA beam of electrons to 16- to 20-MeV in 64 gaps. To suppress beam- breakup (BBU) instabilities induced by excitation of rf deflecting modes, the growth factor [Gamma] must be kept sufficiently small (e.g.
