Book excerpt: Beam-based alignment of quadrupole and sextupole magnets is crucial for the overall performance of linear collider final focus systems, especially for elimination of backgrounds and higher-order aberrations. At the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB), alignment tolerances required for achieving the desired spot size are 100 microns in the horizontal and 30 microns in the vertical. Using a combination of independent magnet power supplies, hi-h-resolution stripline beam position monitors and precision magnet movers, the FFTB can be aligned to these tolerances in about 8 hours. Description of the algorithm, presentation of alignment results, and possible improvements to the system are discussed.

Book excerpt: Using a new extraction line currently under construction, the ATF2 experiment plans to test the novel compact final focus optics design with local chromaticity correction intended for use in future linear colliders. With a 1.3 GeV design beam of 30nm normalized vertical emittance extracted from the ATF damping ring, the primary goal is to achieve a vertical spot-size at the IP waist of 37nm. We discuss our planned strategy for tuning the ATF2 beam to meet the primary goal. Simulation studies have been performed to asses the effectiveness of the strategy, including 'static' (installation) errors and dynamical effects (ground-motion, mechanical vibration, ring extraction jitter etc.). We have simulated all steps in the tuning procedure, from initial orbit establishment to final IP spot-size tuning. Through a Monte Carlo study of 100's of simulation seeds we find we can achieve a spot-size within (almost equal to)10% of the design optics value in at least 75% of cases. We also ran a simulation to study the long-term performance with the use of beam-based feedbacks.

Book excerpt: Final focus systems for linear colliders present many exacting challenges in beam optics, component design, and beam quality. Efforts to resolve these problems as they relate to a new generation of linear colliders are under way at several laboratories around the world. We will outline criteria for final focus systems and discuss the current state of understanding and resolution of the outstanding problems. We will discuss tolerances on alignment, field quality and stability for optical elements, and the implications for beam parameters such as emittance, energy spread, bunch length, and stability in position and energy. Beam-based correction procedures, which in principle can alleviate many of the tolerances, will be described. Preliminary results from the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) under construction at SLAC will be given. Finally, we mention conclusions from operating experience at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC).

Book excerpt: In order to meet their luminosity goals, linear colliders operating in the center-of-mass energy range from 3,50 to 1,500 GeV will need to deliver beams which are as small as a few Manometers tall, with x:y aspect ratios as large as 100. The Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) is a prototype for the final focus demanded by these colliders: its purpose is to provide demagnification equivalent to those in the future linear collider, which corresponds to a focused spot size in the FFTB of 1.7 microns (horizontal) by 60 manometers (vertical). In order to achieve the desired spot sizes, the FFTB beam optics must be tuned to eliminate aberrations and other errors, and to ensure that the optics conform to the desired final conditions and the measured initial conditions of the beam. Using a combination of incoming-beam diagnostics. beam-based local diagnostics, and global tuning algorithms, the FFTB beam size has been reduced to a stable final size of 1.7 microns by 70 manometers. In addition, the chromatic properties of the FFTB have been studied using two techniques and found to be acceptable. Descriptions of the hardware and techniques used in these studies are presented, along with results and suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: Beam based alignment is being routinely applied in the SLC Final Focus and has proved to be a very useful tool for determining the quality of the zeroth order orbit as defined by various beam line elements. Given the stringent requirement on the beam quality at the interaction point, a well aligned beam line is essential in that it minimizes the confusion which would otherwise arise in the higher order optics, the demand called on the correctors which also serve as optical knobs, and the problem associated with the background radiation. In the SLC final focus we have been relying on an interplay between the field survey and the orbit analysis to achieve this purpose. Mechanical alignment generally provides coordinate information of various beam line elements and offset values inferred from these data and the model of the beam line. Beam based alignment is done mainly by recording the beam orbit under controlled experiment where optical elements or orbit conditions are varied. Due to the complexity of the beamline layout and special power supply configuration in the SLC Final Focus, the latter method is useful only when coupled with off-line analysis which disentangles the data taken at each measurement. In this report we describe the techniques used and the underlying principle, the procedure as applied in the Final Focus, the outcome of this exercise and some problems encountered. 6 figs.

One of the challenges of this LC will be to focus the beam down to nm level transverse sizes at the interaction point, to obtain a high luminosity. The two LC projects (lLC and CLlC) require beam delivery systems with the same local chromaticity correction scheme in the final focus (FF). ATF2 at KEK (Japan) implements this scheme scaled down in energy, uses the beam extracted from the ATF damping ring. The ATF2 goals are to prove the feasibility and the stability of the LC FF system and to define and test the experimental correction procedures. The work in this thesis was st3lied before the commissioning and covered its first year at KEK. At the beginning, we observed that the striplines BPMs were not working properly. The problem was characterized and later solved in 20] 0 by upgrading the electronics. We then developed an efficient procedure to check the modelling of the beam line. Then, we were able to successfully test the trajectory correction algorithm which had been developed. We also successfully developed an algorithm to reconstruct pulse to pulse beam trajectory fluctuations with sub-flm precision. This reconstruction also gave a precise determination of the energy fluctuation, allowing a global fit of the dispersion function along the beam line with a precision of a few mm. A simple and robust IP beam size tuning method using sextupoles displacements was also studied in simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attainment of high luminosity in linear colliders is a complex problem because of the interdependence of the critical parameters. For instance, changing the number of particles per bunch affects the damping ring design and thus the emittance; it affects the wakefields in the linac and thus the momentum spread; the momentum spread affects the final focus design and thus the final [beta]*; but the emittance change also affects the final focus design; and all these come together to determine the luminosity, disruption and beamstrahlung at the intersection. Changing the bunch length, or almost any other parameter, has a similar chain reaction. Dealing with this problem by simple scaling laws is very difficult because one does not know which parameter is going to be critical, and thus which should be held constant. One can only maximize the luminosity by a process of search and iteration. The process can be facilitated with the aid of a computer program. Examples can then be optimized for maximum luminosity, and compared to the optimized solutions with different approaches. This paper discusses these approaches.

Book excerpt: The goal of the Final Focus Test Beam experiment (FFTB) is to produce an electron beam spot of 1 .mu.m by 60 nm in transverse dimensions. In the future linear collider of TeV region (TLC), a typical spot size of 100 nm by 1 nm at the interaction point is required to get luminosity of 1 x 1034cm/sup /minus/2/s/sup /minus/1/. This spot size is about 1/1000 of the SLC in the vertical dimension, and is demanding for an optics design, alignments, beam diagnostics, and tuning procedures. The spot size of the FFTB will be an important next step from the SLC toward the TLC. This paper describes the design of the beam optics. 11 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Requirements for final focusing of the beams severely restrict the bunch to bunch energy variation during the rf pulse. To accurately determine the accelerating fields and energy variation, the dispersion related transient behavior of the rf drive pulse must be considered. A numerical study of dispersion effects on several different accelerating structures is presented.
