Download or read book Painting California written by Jean Stern and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luminous, gorgeously realized landscape paintings made en plein air by members of the California Art Club over the past 100 years. This volume showcases 200 works by California Art Club artists who have focused on the evocative seascapes, charming seaside towns, and beach communities from San Diego to San Francisco, demonstrating a breathtaking range of natural settings suffused with atmosphere, drama, and light. Since the dawn of the twentieth century, California has been home to artists from all over America and Europe who aspired to depict the state’s compelling natural landscapes on canvas. In 1909, these artists founded the California Art Club, which stands today as one of the most esteemed painting societies in the United States. This volume, which follows Skira Rizzoli’s luminous California Light: A Century of Landscapes, presents more of the club’s distinctive and lush plein air painting, an impressionistic style in which painters work outdoors in order to capture the ephemeral moment when the natural lighting of a landscape elevates an already beautiful scene into something sublime. As observed by W.H. Auden, “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” We as a species are drawn to the sea—artists perhaps even more so than others, as beautifully evidenced in this book.

Book Art Deco of the Palm Beaches

Download or read book Art Deco of the Palm Beaches written by Sharon Koskoff and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Deco design is a jazzy celebration of the Machine Age, mass production, geometry, and the straight line. In Palm Beach County, sleek themes are seen representing tropical, nautical, masculine, and stylized motifs that reflect speed and technology. Elements include eyebrows, flat roofs, porthole windows, rounded corners, columns, glass blocks, bandings, multiples of three, and Zig-Zag steps. Palm Beach County has dozens of Art Deco treasures built throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, which are located in the downtowns of Delray Beach up through West Palm Beach. Art Deco architecture found in Palm Beach County is spread out rather than concentrated in one location. These buildings are significant to the history of South Florida because they represent some of the earliest structures ever built in the area. These remarkable gems are in danger of being demolished due to the ever-increasing amount of development throughout the county.

Book excerpt: What began as a self-imposed discipline took on a life of its own. On April 1, 2020 the Town of Falmouth closed its beach parking lots as a proactive measure to reduce Covid 19 viral spread. It meant I lost the option of painting beach scenes from the front seat of my car. They remained closed until May 24. A total of 54 days. One year later, March, 2021, I found myself sitting in my car in a beach parking lot, painting and wondering "why didn't I do this more often last year?" Then I remembered. I couldn't get there. The idea came to me to celebrate how life is different this year. So on April 1, 2021, I began a series of 54 paintings of the Falmouth beaches. My personal commitment was to complete the paintings in 54 days, one a day, every day, by May 24. You hold in your hands the result of that commitment. In this new expanded version, I include The Other 46, the paintings completed in the 46 days following the completion of the 54 project. They take the alla prima "a painting a day" run to a full 100 days. Please enjoy, and thank you for looking.

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Sargent and the Sea written by John Singer Sargent and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ships and the sea through the eyes of one of the most remarkable painters of the early 20th century As a young man the American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was passionate about the sea and deeply knowledgeable about ships and seafaring. Between the ages of 18 and 23 he started his career as a professional painter with a remarkable range of maritime works that form the subject of this exhibition and book. The key works are the two versions of the Oyster Gatherers of Cancale, painted in 1878 on the northern coast of Brittany in France, and the group of studies and sketches around them. The authors relate Sargent's freely handled marine drawings, large and small, to his watercolors, oil sketches, and finished oil paintings of marine subjects. The works demonstrate his transition from a plein-air painter to a tonalist exploring interiors and urban scenes. Also presented is a unique scrapbook, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that includes more than 50 drawings and sketches, mostly of sea scenes, and postcards and commercial photography of works of art, architecture, and tourist views. This scrapbook provides an intimate glimpse at the thoughts and experiences of the young artist on his first European voyage. Exhibition Schedule: Corcoran Gallery, Washington (9/12/09 - 1/3/10) The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2/14/10 - 5/23/10) Royal Academy of Arts, London (7/10/10 - 9/23/10)
