Download or read book A Voice of Hope written by Nadia Salomon and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable life of Myrlie Evers-Williams is honored and celebrated in this stunningly illustrated picture book biography of a civil rights hero--the very first of its kind. Myrlie Evers-Williams’ voice is gentle yet strong, soft yet powerful. It is a soaring song of hope. Myrlie’s voice didn’t start out that way. She was born into the segregated South and the beautiful brown color of her skin made her a target for hate. It meant she didn’t have the same opportunities as white children, and that meant her dream of playing music onstage one day would be harder to achieve. But this didn’t stop Myrlie. As she grew, she marched for equal rights alongside her husband and activist, Medgar Evers. She fought against Jim Crow laws and for voting rights. She became the chair of the NAACP, and finally she realized her dream of performing at Carnegie Hall. After that, as a voice for hope and change, Myrlie spoke at President Obama’s second inauguration, inspiring a nation. Nadia Salomon’s lyrical text and London Ladd’s exquisite artwork honor and celebrate the legendary life of Myrlie Evers-Williams and share her message of hope with the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever biography of Mozhdah Jamalzadah: refugee, pop singer, and champion of women’s rights. Many have tried to silence her, but Mozhdah Jamalzadah remains the most powerful female voice of her generation in Afghanistan, boldly speaking out about women’s rights. Voice of Rebellion charts her incredible journey, including arriving in Canada as a child refugee, setting her father’s protest poem to music (and making it a #1 hit), performing that song for Michelle and Barack Obama, and, finally, being invited to host her own show in Afghanistan. The Mozhdah Show earned her the nickname “The Oprah of Afghanistan” and tackled taboo subjects like divorce and domestic violence for the first time in the country’s history. But even as her words resonated with women and families, Mozhdah received angry death threats—some of them serious—and was eventually advised to return to Canada. Traversing Central Asia and North America, Voice of Rebellion profiles a devoted singer and activist who continues to fight for change, even from afar.

Download or read book The Voice of Hope written by Aung San Suu Kyi and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aung San Suu Kyi has suffered constant harassment and abuse from the Burmese authorities, long separation from her family and six years of house arrest. In these 12 interviews, she talks about her passion for justice and the sacrifices she has had to make. One of the very few people she has trusted enough to take her message to the wider world is Alan Clements. The Voice of Hope is the result of the secret and dangerous meetings they had over several years, and offers unquestionably the most wide-ranging collection of her views on the political situation inside Burma, her non-violent approach to democracy and human rights, her Buddhist beliefs, her family, and how she keeps a sense of meaning and purpose under the most appalling conditions. Brand new material includes an inspiring discussion with U-Gambira, the leader of the All-Burma Monks Alliance, conducted after the 2007 uprising (he has since 'disappeared'). There is also an updated Chronology of Events of recent Burmese history, a new introduction and a new list of Burma-related websites.
Download or read book A Theology of Hope written by Sang Yun Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee advocates a "theology of hope," essentially different from the Moltmann version on which the idea is developed. Lee shows how Cho's message, particularly in its promise of a "saved" healthy, happy and prosperous life (the "Threefold Blessing"), was the antidote to the events that had ravaged the Korean peninsula in the 1950s. At the same time, Asian Pentecostal scholars might also need a greater appreciation for both the diversity and richness of their cultural and religious past. . . . [They] have found both culturally and biblically acceptable alternatives to, and adaptations from, the practices of their ancient religions and are seeking to provide answers to the needs of their own context. --Allan H. Anderson, University of Birmingham, England (From the Foreword)

Download or read book Voices of Hope for Mental Illness written by Jackie Goldstein and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We hear about inadequate mental health care. We ask questions regarding a link between mental illness and violence. We do NOT hear as much about the stigma of mental illness that complicates one's ability to cope with a diagnosis that becomes a label, resulting in "self-stigma,"discouraging individuals from seeking and/or complying with treatment. Too often community members only "experience" mental illness through dramatic or dire media stories that fail to inform us about the real world of mental illness. Thus, stigma feeds, and is fed by, myths and misunderstandings leading to a community sense of hopelessness and fear of mental illness. In contrast, Geel, a stigma-free community in Belgium, has a centuries' old history of accepting those with mental illness - even as boarders in their own homes. Geel acknowledges the human needs of those with mental illness and responds to those needs by providing social opportunities and meaningful work, within the community While the U.S. does not have the same history as Geel, we do have programs that offer a fostering environment, offering hope for those with a diagnosis of mental illness as well as for the communities in which they live. In a language and style that can be understood by anyone and everyone, the author shares what she's learned and experienced regarding tolerance and inclusion - in Geel and in our own country - offering individuals and communities an opportunity to hear the encouraging "voices of hope for mental illness." When the general population is freed of myths and misunderstandings regarding mental illness, we can focus on mental health fostered by community care that thrives in "caring communities."
