This book was released on 2004 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report on the BBC's Charter review focuses on four inter-related issues: i) the scope and remit of the BBC in the context of the growth of digital TV and on-going technological developments in audiovisual communications; ii) its funding mechanism; iii) its governance and regulation; and iv) whether a Charter provides the most appropriate means of establishing the Corporation in a rapidly-changing communications environment. Key aspects considered include the role, definition and scope of public service broadcasting, the growth of multichannel television, the on-going roll-out of broadband networks, and the Government's plans to switch off the analogue television signal. The report makes 38 conclusions and recommendations, including i) the BBC should be placed on a statutory basis by Act of Parliament at the earliest opportunity, with allowance for pre-legislative scrutiny by a joint Committee of both Houses; with a five year Charter to cover the interim period, between the date the current Charter expires at the end of 2006 and the passing of the recommended legislation; and ii) fundamental changes in the governance system of the BBC, with responsibility for corporate governance separated from maintenance and regulation of its independence.

Book excerpt: The many public debates launched by governments on education, such as Tony Blair's emphasis on "education, education, education" have nonetheless failed to consider the place of the good society in educational endeavour. The traditional account of education is that it not only teaches pupils the skills to earn a living, but also teaches a concern for the welfare of others, a love of the many cultures of learning and a commitment to the best values of society. Education and the Good Society seeks to examine these considerations and to restore them to the centre of the educational debate.
Download or read book Branding Television written by Catherine Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Branding Television examines why and how the UK and US television industries have turned towards branding as a strategy in response to the rise of satellite, cable and digital television, and new media, such as the internet and mobile phone. This is the first book to offer a sustained critical analysis of this new cultural development. Branding Television examines the industrial, regulatory and technological changes since the 1980s in the UK and the USA that have led to the adoption of branding as broadcasters have attempted to manage the behaviour of viewers and the values associated with their channels, services and programmes in a world of increased choice and interactivity. Wide-ranging case studies drawn from commercial, public service, network and cable/satellite television (from NBC and HBO to MTV, and from BBC and Channel 4 to UKTV and Sky) analyse the role of marketing and design in branding channels and corporations, and the development of programmes as brands. Exploring both successful and controversial uses of branding, this book asks what problems there are in creating television brands and whether branding supports or undermines commercial and public service broadcasting. Branding Television extends and complicates our understanding of the changes to television over the past 30 years and of the role of branding in contemporary Western culture. It will be of particular interest to students and researchers in television studies, but also in creative industries and media and cultural studies more generally.
Download or read book The implications of cuts to the BBC World Service written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foreign Affairs Committee believes the BBC World Service is of such value to the nation that its income should be ring-fenced against spending cuts. The Service has suffered a disproportionate reduction in its future Grant-in-Aid under the spending review settlement, by comparison with that of the 'core FCO': allowing for inflation, 16% as against 10% across the four years 2010-11 to 2014-15. High-level discussions between the Government and the BBC about a transfer of funding responsibility started only nine days before the formal announcement of the change. The report says that the decision to reduce World Service spending by 16% during the 2010 spending review period should be reversed, and resources made available for it to continue its operations at roughly the 2010-11 level of staffing and output. If the Service's funding is reduced in spite of this recommendation, the committee urges for damage limitation with an unreduced BBC Hindi and BBC China Mandarin shortwave service, and enhanced resources to BBC Arabic as required by the recent and continuing political developments in the region. Some of the activity of the World Service contributes to the wider aims of the Department for International Development, and a transfer of just 0.35% of DFID's resource budget over the next three years would compensate for the proposed 16% reduction in World Service funding. There is no reason why such a transfer should not be made if the political will to carry it out is present.

Download or read book BBC licence fee settlement and annual report written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Culture Media and Sport Committee says that the main outcomes of the BBC Trust's strategic review do not move the BBC on to the extent required by current circumstances, and that the incoming Chairman will have much to get grips with. The new licence fee agreement was reached "unexpectedly" in October 2010 between the Department for Culture Media and Sport and the BBC, but without any time for wider consultation with viewers or Parliament. The Committee believes the agreement reached is a reasonable one, but the process undermined confidence in both the Government's and the BBC's commitment to transparency and accountability. On the partnership between BBC and S4C, it is unclear how S4C can retain its independence under the new arrangements. It is extraordinary that the Government and the BBC should agree such wide-ranging changes without consultation or giving S4C any notice or say at all. The Committee is particularly concerned that National Audit Office still does not have the promised access to conduct independent assessments of the BBC's value for money. The Committee is also disappointed that banded information on talent salaries is still not in the public domain. The BBC opened itself to predictable ridicule with the decision to hire a "migration manager" who had to commute from the United States to manage the transition to the new Salford site. The report concludes that big questions remain over how radically the BBC needs to reconfigure both content and delivery in the years ahead.
Download or read book Market Driven Politics written by Colin Leys and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the globalisation of the capitalist economy the economic role of national governments is now largely confined to controlling inflation and facilitating home-grown market performance. This represents a fundamental shift in the relationship between politics and economics; it has been particularly marked in Britain, but is relevant to many other contexts. Market-Driven Politics is a multi-level study, moving between an analysis of global economic forces through national politics to the changes occurring week by week in two fields of public life that are both fundamentally important and familiar to everyone.television broadcasting and health care. Public services like these play an important role, because they both affect the legitimacy of the government and are targets for global capital. This book provides an original analysis of the key processes of commodification of public services, the conversion of public-service workforces into employees motivated to generate profit, and the role of the state in absorbing risk. Understanding the dynamics of each of these trends becomes critical not just for the analysis of market-driven politics but also for the longer-term defence of democracy and the collective values on which it depends.
Download or read book Public Diplomacy and the Politics of Uncertainty written by Pawel Surowiec and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book explores the multi-layered relationships between public diplomacy and intensified uncertainties stemming from transnational political trends. It is the latest wave of political uncertainty that provides the background as well as yields evidence scrutinised by authors contributing to this book. The book argues that due to a state of perpetual crises, the simultaneity of diplomatic tensions and new digital modalities of power, international politics increasingly resembles a networked set of hyper-realities. Embracing multi-polar competition, superpowers such as Russia flex their muscles over their neighbours; celebrated ‘success stories’ of democratisation – Hungary, Poland and Czechia – move towards illiberal governance; old players of international politics such as Britain and America re-claim “greatness”, while other states, like China, adapt expansionist foreign policy goals. The contributors to this book consider the different ways in which transnational political trends and digitalisation breed uncertainty and shape the practice of public diplomacy.
Download or read book Destigmatising mental illness written by Vicky Long and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical study of mental healthcare workers’ efforts to educate the public challenges the supposition that public prejudice generates the stigma of mental illness. Drawing on extensive archival research, this book argues that psychiatrists, nurses and social workers generated representations of mental illness which reflected their professional aspirations, economic motivations and perceptions of the public. Sharing in the stigma of their patients, healthcare workers sought to enhance the prestige of their professions by focussing upon the ability of psychiatry to effectively treat acute cases of mental disturbance. As a consequence, healthcare workers inadvertently reinforced the stigma attached to serious and enduring mental distress. This book makes a major contribution to the history of mental healthcare, and critiques current campaigns which seek to end mental health discrimination for failing to address the political, economic and social factors which fuel discrimination. It will appeal to academics, students, healthcare practitioners and service users.
