Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the haunted history of this Florida Gulf Coast city with tales of battles, murders, natural disasters and the restless spirits they left behind. Located on the coast of Florida’s panhandle, Panama City offers plenty of charm, fun and sun. But it also has a dramatic past that still lingers among its old buildings and historic landmarks. Staff at the City Center for the Arts can still hear the footsteps of inmates pacing the cells of the Old County Jail that once occupied the grounds, and a phantom known as Virginia still frequents the elevators of the historic Bay County Courthouse. Not all spirits bring doom and gloom, however—one local family learned how to befriend the resident ghost of their new home that was fond of whistling at night. Using extensive research and interviews, author Beverly Nield details the ghastly history of haunted Panama City.

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Careful study of the home region furnishes an excellent foundation for the later study of the geography, history, and government of our nation and of other nations. It is interesting and understandable because the child is living in the midst of the conditions, events, and things studied. He sees old friends in a new light. Moreover, most of the elements in the more advanced studies are to be found at home in the regional study. The interaction between man and his physical surroundings has taken place in many ways right here in Bay County. The forests furnish the best example, for they attracted the people here, furnished them with their occupations, and in the meantime were cleared away by those people who established rich farms and built great factories in their places. Bay City furnishes a good example of two types of cities, as it combines the elements both of the trading and distributing center and of the manufacturing center. Government has developed step by step from the very simple government of an unsettled region into the complex government of a densely populated county.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who would have thought a city would one day stand where there was nothing but swamp, with long grass--where there was scarcely an opening in the woods, and in which the wolves made plenty of howling. This observation was made by Leon Trombley, one of the first to try to settle in this part of the Michigan "frontier" in the early 1800s. His nephews, Mader and Joseph, would soon follow and ultimately become noted among the area's first permanent residents. The residents of Bay City have always aspired to be legendary, whether by design, accident, or sheer determination. Annie Edson Taylor, the area schoolteacher turned daredevil who would ride her Bay City-built barrel over Niagara Falls (and survive!), is only one among a large group of local legends that includes Olympic champions, community leaders, artists, musicians, scholars, philosophers, and historians.

Book excerpt: When the phrase "Do you remember?" is uttered in Bay City, it is usually followed by the name of a hotel, restaurant, business, or building. Slowly, many parts of local history have been lost to the sands of time. Fire took many, followed by condemnations and the inevitable advance of progress. An empty lot may be all that remains of a once-prominent structure, but sometimes a new landmark emerges. In the case of one famous address at Center and Water Streets, the Wenonah Hotel rose out of the ashes of the Fraser House, another prominent facade. Seven decades later, the Wenonah, too, succumbed to fire; out of those ashes rose the Delta College Planetarium, a third-generation landmark. Photographs help residents remember, though each person who experienced something firsthand has his or her own distinct connection with these pieces of lost Bay City.

Download or read book Panama City written by Glenda A. Walters and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First platted as Park Resort and later Harrison, Panama City received its current designation in 1909. More than 100 years ago, men of vision recognized the attractiveness and potential of this land along the shores of St. Andrews Bay, and those visionaries established a city that is now anticipating its centennial year. A local newspaper once reported that such men "saw that nature had dealt kindly with that section of the country and that with properly directed effort a great future awaited it." Others claimed the area was "nothing but a wilderness." Today nature's kindness to those who reside on these shores is apparent. This volume pays tribute to the city by recognizing the places, events, and, most importantly, the individuals who have inspired its success.

Book excerpt: Since the 1830s when the first hints of permanent settlement appeared on the banks near the mouth of the Saginaw River, the river and bay have supported the busy traffic of a major Great Lakes seaport, the humming saws of hundreds of lumber mills, the waves caused by countless vessel launches, and the many other sounds, sights, and smells indicative of industry and innovation. Bay City and West Bay City became major players in the lumbering, shipping, and shipbuilding industries on the Great Lakes from the mid-1800s into the 19th century. Indeed, innovation and perseverance have been the keys to Bay County's world-class maritime industry and culture that are still apparent today.
