Book The Last and Greatest Battle

Download or read book The Last and Greatest Battle written by John Bateson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly every day an active-duty soldier in the United States military resorts to suicide, and nearly every hour a veteran does the same. In recent years the problem of military suicides has reached epidemic proportions, but it's all too easy for most of us to gloss over the headlines or tune out the details. In The Last and Greatest Battle--the first book devoted exclusively to the problem of military suicides--John Bateson brings this neglected crisis into the spotlight. Bateson, the former executive director of a nationally certified suicide prevention center, surveys the history of suicide in the United States military from the Civil War to the present day and outlines a plan to save lives-and ultimately end the tragedy of military suicides. He uses the stories of individual soldiers to illuminate the unique challenges faced by American troops today. Transitioning from the front lines to the home front is difficult for many service members, and many need help both during and after their deployments. But even though the military is spending millions of dollars on suicide prevention programs, record numbers of soldiers continue to take their lives. To that end, Bateson outlines a plan of action. If the military works to remove stigma, to make treatment more effective and more accessible, and to limit risk factors for suicide in the first place by taking measures like reducing the number and length of deployments and adjusting pre-deployment training to take into account the way that wars are waged today, an end to the problem of military suicide is as possible as it is essential.

Book American Battle Monuments Commission

Download or read book American Battle Monuments Commission written by Steven J. Sebastian and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Created in 1923, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) operates and maintains 24 American military cemeteries on foreign soil; 25 federal memorials, monuments, and markers; and 7 non-federal memorials. For FY 2010, the Commission incurred program costs of $69.6 million to maintain its cemeteries and federal memorials. This is the report of the official audits of the financial statements of the Commission for the fiscal years ended Sept. 30, 2010, and 2009. The audits were done to determine whether, in all material respects: (1) the ABMC's financial statements were presented fairly; and (2) ABMC management maintained effective internal control over financial reporting. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Book The Battle of Turkey Thicket

Download or read book The Battle of Turkey Thicket written by Christopher Russell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Battle of Turkey Thicket" is the true story of Philip Thomas Hughes, an orphan who rebelled against the oppressive wishes of his adoptive parents. His battle raged across state lines, from Washington, D.C.'s Brookland community to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It spilled across the border into Canada, then coursed through Chicago's Skid Row. Philip's journey took a romantic interlude in post-war Japan before reaching its climax during the darkest days of a war in Korea, in the shadow of a place that the U.S. Army called "Hill 300." "The Battle of Turkey Thicket" recalls Philip's journeys and the enduring outcome of his final sacrifice.

Book The Battle for Western Europe Fall 1944

Download or read book The Battle for Western Europe Fall 1944 written by John A. Adams and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engrossing and meticulously researched volume reexamines the decisions made by Dwight D. Eisenhower and his staff in the crucial months leading up to the Battle of the Bulge. In late August 1944 defeat of the Wehrmacht seemed assured. On December 16, however, the Germans counterattacked. Received wisdom says that Eisenhower's Broad Front strategy caused his armies to stall in early September, and his subsequent failure to concentrate his forces brought about deadlock and opened the way for the German attack. Arguing to the contrary, John A. Adams demonstrates that Eisenhower and his staff at SHAEF had a good campaign strategy, refined to reflect developments on the ground, which had an excellent chance of destroying the Germans west of the Rhine.
