Book Bastards Bitches and Heroes

Download or read book Bastards Bitches and Heroes written by Herman I. Neuman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the horrors of our family which started during World War II in Germany, and continued for years thereafter because our father abandoned us. After twenty court processes, involving two dozen lawyers and judges, our family lost everything. My little brother, Siggi, and I suffered severe illnesses, starvation and homelessness. When we were about five and seven, our mother forced us to scavenge pig's innards from a manure pile. With the ever-present wire whip that she usually kept pinned to her skirt, she enticed us to eat them. A judge evicted us from our home. On Christmas Eve Day. For one year we squatted in a stranger's attic without water, sewer, heat, power or hope. When we were fourteen and sixteen, our relatives invited us to America. We now thought that our lives would improve: Cowboys and Indians! But when we later arrived on their dairy farms, they enslaved us. I was not allowed to bathe but once a year. At the age of twenty-one, I still lived without water, heat, power, or outhouse. After we finally escaped, Siggi and I worked our way through college, became American citizens and world travelers.

Book Darkness for the Bastards of Pizzofalcone

Download or read book Darkness for the Bastards of Pizzofalcone written by Maurizio de Giovanni and published by Europa Editions. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in the contemporary Italian crime fiction series featuring Inspector Lojacono by the bestselling author of the Commissario Ricciardi novels. A kidnapped child and the burglary of a high-class apartment: Two crimes that seem to have no connection at all until Inspector Lojacono, known as “The Chinaman,” starts to investigate. Darkness for the Bastards of Pizzofalcone is the second book in a series set in contemporary Naples that draws inspiration from Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct novels and features a large cast of complicated cops doing battle with ruthless criminals. De Giovanni is one of the most dexterous and successful writers of crime fiction currently working in Europe. His award-winning and bestselling novels, all set in Naples, offer a brilliant vision of the criminal underworld and the police that battle it in Europe’s most fabled, atmospheric, dangerous, and lustful city. “Imagine Fellini and Chandler collaborating on a Neapolitan remake of Our Town, and that begins to give you an idea of what you’re in for with Darkness for the Bastards of Pizzofalcone. . . . While de Giovanni never wavers from a world where terrible people do terrible things, motivated by selfishness, greed, and loathing (for themselves, for others, for both), he illuminates the soft underbelly of fear and loss without being manipulative.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “The police characters are flawed, lovable, and believable—you cannot but take to them. . . . Naples comes through loud and clear in the story.” —Tripfiction

Book Thanks But This Isn t for Us

Download or read book Thanks But This Isn t for Us written by Jessica Page Morrell and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun, practical guide that reveals the essentials of good fiction and memoir writing by exposing the most common mistakes literary writers make. All great works of fiction and memoir are unique-but most bad novels, stories, and memoirs have a lot in common. From clunky dialogue to poorly sketchedout characters, sagging pacing to exaggerated prose, these beginners' mistakes drive any agent or editor to their stock rejection letter, telling the aspiring writer "Thanks, but this isn't for us," and leaving many to wonder what exactly it is that they're doing wrong. Veteran writing coach, developmental editor, and writing instructor Jessica Page Morrell will fill in the gaps in every rejection letter you've ever received. In Thanks, But This Isn't for Us, Morrell uses her years of experience to isolate the specific errors beginners make, including the pitfalls of unrealistic dialogue, failing to "show, not tell," and over-the-top plot twists. These are just a few of the problems that keep writers from breaking through with their work. Sympathetic and humane, but pulling no punches, Thanks, But This Isn't for Us shows writers precisely where they've gone wrong and how to get on the right track. In sixteen to-the-point chapters, with checklists, exercises, takeaway tips, and a glossary, Morrell helps readers transcend these mistakes so that they don't have to learn the hard way: with another rejection letter.

Book excerpt: In December 1835, eight officers and one hundred men of the U.S. Army under the command of Brevet Major Francis Langhorne Dade set out from Fort Brooke at Tampa Bay, Florida, to march north a hundred miles to reinforce Fort King (present-day Ocala). On the sixth day, halfway to their destination, they were attacked by Seminole Indians. By four o'clock in the afternoon, only three wounded soldiers survived what came to be known as the Dade Massacre. Only two of those men managed to struggle fifty miles back to Fort Brooke. One of them—wounded in the shoulder and hip, a bullet in one lung—was Private Ransom Clark. It is the story of great duplicity, not on the part of Seminole Indians, but of the politicians and officers who sent the men of Dade's command to their death. The Dade Massacre was the pretext the U.S. government needed to begin the Second Seminole War, the longest and most expensive Indian war in American history. In 1839 Ransom Clark wrote a brief account of his ordeal, entitled The Surprising Adventures of Ransom Clark, Among the Indians in Florida. Although he promised to later supply an entire account, he didn't live long enough to do so, succumbing to his grave wounds. In Nobody's Hero, Frank Laumer completes Clark's story.
