Book Basic Electronics for Scientists and Engineers

Download or read book Basic Electronics for Scientists and Engineers written by Dennis L. Eggleston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideal for a one-semester course, this concise textbook covers basic electronics for undergraduate students in science and engineering. Beginning with the basics of general circuit laws and resistor circuits to ease students into the subject, the textbook then covers a wide range of topics, from passive circuits through to semiconductor-based analog circuits and basic digital circuits. Using a balance of thorough analysis and insight, readers are shown how to work with electronic circuits and apply the techniques they have learnt. The textbook's structure makes it useful as a self-study introduction to the subject. All mathematics is kept to a suitable level, and there are several exercises throughout the book. Password-protected solutions for instructors, together with eight laboratory exercises that parallel the text, are available online at www.cambridge.org/Eggleston.

Book Cycles of Invention and Discovery

Download or read book Cycles of Invention and Discovery written by Venkatesh Narayanamurti and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cycles of Invention and Discovery offers an in-depth look at the real-world practice of science and engineering. It shows how the standard categories of “basic” and “applied” have become a hindrance to the organization of the U.S. science and technology enterprise. Tracing the history of these problematic categories, Venkatesh Narayanamurti and Toluwalogo Odumosu document how historical views of policy makers and scientists have led to the construction of science as a pure ideal on the one hand and of engineering as a practical (and inherently less prestigious) activity on the other. Even today, this erroneous but still widespread distinction forces these two endeavors into separate silos, misdirects billions of dollars, and thwarts progress in science and engineering research. The authors contrast this outmoded perspective with the lived experiences of researchers at major research laboratories. Using such Nobel Prize–winning examples as magnetic resonance imaging, the transistor, and the laser, they explore the daily micro-practices of research, showing how distinctions between the search for knowledge and creative problem solving break down when one pays attention to the ways in which pathbreaking research actually happens. By studying key contemporary research institutions, the authors highlight the importance of integrated research practices, contrasting these with models of research in the classic but still-influential report Science the Endless Frontier. Narayanamurti and Odumosu’s new model of the research ecosystem underscores that discovery and invention are often two sides of the same coin that moves innovation forward.

Book Basic Electronics

Download or read book Basic Electronics written by Sean Westcott and published by Mercury Learning and Information. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for both the student and hobbyist, this updated revision is an introduction to the theory and practice of electronics including advances in microcontrollers, sensors, and wireless communication. Each chapter contains a brief lab to demonstrate the topic under discussion, then moves on to use all of the knowledge mastered to build a programmable robot (Arduino and Netduino). New material on using Raspberry Pi and Python has been included. The companion files include short videos of the labs, soldering skills, and code samples for programming of the robot. Covering both the theory and also its practical applications, this text leads the reader through the basic scientific concepts underlying electronics, building basic circuits, learning the roles of the components, the application of digital theory, and the possibilities for innovation by combining sensors, motors, and microcontrollers. It includes appendices on mathematics for electronics, a timeline of electronics innovation, careers in electronics, and a glossary. FEATURES: Includes companion files with over twenty video tutorials on currents, soldering, power supply, resistors, decoder circuits, Raspberry Pi, animations of featured circuits and more Features a chapter on using Raspberry Pi and Python in electronic projects and a new chapter on Cybersecurity and the Internet of Things (IoT) Leads the reader through an introductory understanding of electronics with simple labs and then progressing to the construction of a microcontroller-driven robot using open source software and hardware (Netduino and Arduino versions) Presents theoretical concepts in a conversational tone, followed by hands-on labs to engage readers by presenting practical applications. Book Forces Shaping the U S Academic Engineering Research Enterprise

Download or read book Forces Shaping the U S Academic Engineering Research Enterprise written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-08-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which academic engineering research is financed and public expectations for the outcomes from such research are changing at an unprecedented rate. The decrease in support of defense-related research, coupled with the realization that many U.S. technological products are no longer competitive in the global market, has sent a shock wave through research universities that train engineers. This book argues for several concrete actions on the part of universities, government, and industry to ensure the flow and relevance of technical talent to meet national social and economic goals, to maintain a position of leadership in the global economy, and to preserve and enhance the nation's engineering knowledge base.

Book Basic Digital Electronics

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.A. Strong
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-12
  • ISBN : 940113118X
  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book Basic Digital Electronics written by J.A. Strong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern electronics is the most visible result of research in solid state physics. Transistors and integrated circuits are used everywhere in ever increasing numbers. The microprocessor controlled coffee-pot exists. Most experimental physicists, and, indeed, experimental scientists in most disciplines, study their subject with the aid of apparatus containing significant amounts of electronics and much of that electronics is digital. In order to design experiments and apparatus or simply to understand how a piece of equipment works, an under standing of electronics has become increasingly important. In recognition that electronics has pervaded so many areas, courses in digital electronics are now a recommended part of physics and many other science degree courses. At the introductory level, digital electronics is, primarily, a practical subject with relatively few basic concepts and any complex ity arises from the coupling together of many simple circuits and the extensive use of feedback. Designing an electronic circuit and then getting it to work correctly provides an experience, and a sense of achievement, which is significantly different from most undergradu ate work as it more closely resembles project work than standard laboratory practicals.
