Download or read book The Elson Basic Readers written by William Harris Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 1930 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elson Basic Readers: Primer The second aim in this revision was to incorporate new features demanded by experience and the results of recent experiments in reading. Four such features merit Special emphasis: (a) organization of the material to promote sequential habits of thinking; (b) simplicity in content, sentence structure, and vocabulary to insure rapid progress, confidence, and keen interest; (0) balanced variety to cause a steady growth in diversified reading interests; and (d) a practical method, based on the results of scientific studies, to build an early foundation for the various reading attitudes, habits, and skills that are essential in modern life. An additional distinctive feature of the Primer relates to the extreme care exercised in every stage of its construction. In addition to continuous and painstaking effort by the authors, the materials included were subjected to the constant criticism of experts in primary instruction. Furthermore, studies were continually in progress with respect to various problems which were subject to quantitative determination. These are listed in the manual which accompanies the Primer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, structured literacy is conceptualized as an umbrella term encompassing a variety of intervention methods, instructional approaches, and commercial programs. In addition to focusing on SL approaches to intervention, this book is organized around common poor reader profiles that have been identified in research. The chapters in this volume are written by experts who are well known as researchers but who are also highly skilled at writing for practitioners. Chapters were written with a strong foundation of research that is summarized, but with a concentration on translating research into practice, including case studies, sample intervention activities, and lesson plans. Each chapter includes application activities at the end to check for and extend readers' understanding"--

Download or read book Dick and Jane written by William H. Elson and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the original Dick and Jane book published in 1930 as one of the Elson-Gray Readers. This book was published by William H. Elson (1856-1935) and William S. Gray (1885-1960). It was a revised version of the series of Elson Readers that were being published by 1909. Before the Elston Readers there were the McGuffy Readers starting in 1881. The McGuffy Readers showed a picture of a cat chasing a rat with the sentence "The Cat and the Rat Ran." These readers were used universally in schools for 40 years. The Elston Readers starting in 1909 had more of a story line and avoided unpleasant but realistic pictures of cats eating rats. It had a short list of repeatable words. This was a series of readers with different stories for different grade levels. Dick and Jane were just two of the characters but they were the ones who seemed to catch on. However, other stories became famous such as "The Little Engine that Could."

Download or read book What We Talk About When We Talk About Books written by Leah Price and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports of the death of reading are greatly exaggerated Do you worry that you've lost patience for anything longer than a tweet? If so, you're not alone. Digital-age pundits warn that as our appetite for books dwindles, so too do the virtues in which printed, bound objects once trained us: the willpower to focus on a sustained argument, the curiosity to look beyond the day's news, the willingness to be alone. The shelves of the world's great libraries, though, tell a more complicated story. Examining the wear and tear on the books that they contain, English professor Leah Price finds scant evidence that a golden age of reading ever existed. From the dawn of mass literacy to the invention of the paperback, most readers already skimmed and multitasked. Print-era doctors even forbade the very same silent absorption now recommended as a cure for electronic addictions. The evidence that books are dying proves even scarcer. In encounters with librarians, booksellers and activists who are reinventing old ways of reading, Price offers fresh hope to bibliophiles and literature lovers alike.
