Download or read book Basic Guide to ADHD and Mood Swings written by Aaron Wilmoore MD and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday life is a roller coaster of emotions. You may feel on top of the world one day because of a high-profile promotion or an awesome grade on a test. Another day, you may feel down in the dumps due to relationship problems, financial troubles, or because you got a flat tire on the way to work. These are normal fluctuations in mood that come and go. When your mood starts to have an impact on your daily activities and in your social, educational, and vocational relationships, you may be suffering from a mood disorder.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.Children with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school. Symptoms sometimes lessen with age. However, some people never completely outgrow their ADHD symptoms. But they can learn strategies to be successful. While treatment won't cure ADHD, it can help a great deal with symptoms. Treatment typically involves medications and behavioral interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in outcome. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors interfere with school and home life. It's more common in boys than in girls. It's usually discovered during the early school years, when a child begins to have problems paying attention.

Book Basic Guide on ADHD and Depression

Download or read book Basic Guide on ADHD and Depression written by Aaron Wilmoore MD and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's estimated about 18.6 percent of adults are affected by both ADHD and depression. The symptoms of depression include the loss of interest in familiar activities, feeling tired a lot of the time, and experiencing unplanned changes in sleep and eating habits. Some people struggling with depression describe feeling numb to their own life, disconnected from others, and alone even when they are not. They may also feel agitated, with a sense of wanting to get out of their own skin.Depression is different from the "blues," or sadness that follows the end of a relationship or a period of grief after a loved one dies, although those can turn into depression if they last for the long term."Sometimes with situations like bereavement, a breakup, or a job loss, it can snowball into a clinical depressive episode," says Roberto Olivardia, PhD, a clinical associate at McLean Hospital and lecturer in psychology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Olivardia is a member of CHADD's Professional Advisory Board. "So, if someone notices after about a two-week period that these symptoms are still happening, then they should definitely be talking to someone."In both clinical and community settings, the clinical significance of ADHD and depressive disorders is substantial when they co-occur. ADHD is a chronic disorder that often persists into adulthood; it is also among the most common psychiatric disorders. In DSM-5, the more lenient criteria for age of onset and lower required number of symptoms for adult ADHD will likely increase the rates of ADHD diagnoses. In adults, episodes of MDD cause significant morbidity and mortality, but when they occur with ADHD, such episodes are more prolonged, more likely to result in suicidal behaviors and hospitalizations, and more likely to convert from unipolar to bipolar mood disorders. The impact of comorbid depression on ADHD response has not been assessed, but studies of patients with bipolar disorders suggest that ADHD treatment may exacerbate untreated mood disorders. Because ADHD typically begins several years before the first unipolar depressive episode, earlier identification and treatment of ADHD may affect the risk of depression.Because children and adults with ADHD struggle with focusing, organizing tasks, and feeling restless, they might experience sadness, guilt, irritability, low self-confidence and helplessness. In some cases, these symptoms can signal depression. Some experts assert that up to 70% of people with ADHD will seek treatment for depression at least once. One study at the University of Chicago reported that adolescents with ADHD are ten times more likely to suffer from depression than adolescents without an ADHD diagnosis.

Book excerpt: A new understanding of ADD, along with practical information on how to recognize and treat the disorder A leading expert in the assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder dispels myths and offers reassuring, practical information about treatments. Drawing on recent findings in neuroscience and a rich variety of case studies from his own clinical practive, Dr. Thomas E. Brown describes what ADD syndrome is, how it can be recognized at different ages, and how it can best be treated. This is the first book to address the perplexing question about ADD: how can individuals, some very bright, be chronically unable to "pay attention," yet be able to focus very well on specific tasks that strongly interest them? Dr. Brown disputes the "willpower" explanation and explains how inherited malfunctions of the brain's management system prevent some people from being able to deal adequately with challenging tasks of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. His book is an authoritative and practical guide for physicians and psychologists, parents and teachers, and the 7 to 9 percent of persons who suffer from ADD/ADHD.

Book RSD and Emotional Triggers A Survival Guide for ADHD

Download or read book RSD and Emotional Triggers A Survival Guide for ADHD written by Theresa Alfonzo and published by Kill the Star. This book was released on 2024-08-23 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is a complex emotional condition often associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It refers to an extreme emotional response to perceived rejection or criticism, which can lead to intense feelings of shame, worthlessness, and anxiety. RSD is not classified as a mental disorder but rather as an emotional experience that many individuals with ADHD report. Understanding RSD is crucial for those managing ADHD, as it adds a significant layer to the already challenging emotional landscape they navigate. The psychological underpinnings of RSD are still being explored, but research suggests a strong connection to the emotional regulation challenges commonly associated with ADHD. Many individuals with ADHD struggle to manage their emotions effectively, leading to heightened sensitivity toward social dynamics. This heightened sensitivity can result in a cycle of avoidance, where individuals may withdraw from social situations or avoid potential rejection altogether, further exacerbating feelings of isolation and loneliness. This book explores the emotional triggers and how to survive them.

Book The Essential Guide to ADHD and Anxiety

Download or read book The Essential Guide to ADHD and Anxiety written by William Barron and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows someone with adult AD/HD. Yet we misattribute the symptoms to anxiety, depression, or even laziness, selfishness, or moodiness. Moreover, we assume AD/HD means "little boys with ants in their pants." In fact, childhood hyperactivity goes "underground" as the person matures, resulting in a mentally restless state. (By the way, the former, and still better-known, official term is ADD, plus or minus Hyperactivity. The new term, AD/HD, uses a slash mark to indicate that hyperactivity is not central to the diagnosis.)Meticulously researched by award-winning writer, This book is a comprehensive guide to recognizing the behaviors where you least expect them (on the road and in the bedroom, for example) and developing compassion for couples wrestling with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. It also offers the latest information from top experts, plenty of real-life details, and easy-to-understand guidelines for finding the best treatment options and practical solutions. The revolutionary message is one of hope for millions of people--and a joyous opportunity for a better life.
