Book excerpt: The Internet Book, Fifth Edition explains how computers communicate, what the Internet is, how the Internet works, and what services the Internet offers. It is designed for readers who do not have a strong technical background — early chapters clearly explain the terminology and concepts needed to understand all the services. It helps the reader to understand the technology behind the Internet, appreciate how the Internet can be used, and discover why people find it so exciting. In addition, it explains the origins of the Internet and shows the reader how rapidly it has grown. It also provides information on how to avoid scams and exaggerated marketing claims. The first section of the book introduces communication system concepts and terminology. The second section reviews the history of the Internet and its incredible growth. It documents the rate at which the digital revolution occurred, and provides background that will help readers appreciate the significance of the underlying design. The third section describes basic Internet technology and capabilities. It examines how Internet hardware is organized and how software provides communication. This section provides the foundation for later chapters, and will help readers ask good questions and make better decisions when salespeople offer Internet products and services. The final section describes application services currently available on the Internet. For each service, the book explains both what the service offers and how the service works. About the Author Dr. Douglas Comer is a Distinguished Professor at Purdue University in the departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has created and enjoys teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on computer networks and Internets, operating systems, computer architecture, and computer software. Book BASIC COMPUTER SCIENCE

Download or read book BASIC COMPUTER SCIENCE written by Prabhu TL and published by NestFame Creations Pvt Ltd.. This book was released on with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Science is one of the disciplines of modern science under which, we study about the various aspects of computer technologies, their development, and their applications in the present world. Likewise, Computer Science includes a wide range of topics such as the development of Computer Technology (hardware and software), application of Computer technology in today’s life, information technology, computer threat, computer security, etc. However, we have segregated this tutorial into different chapters for easy understanding. Computer Science is the study of computers and computational systems. Unlike electrical and computer engineers, computer scientists deal mostly with software and software systems; this includes their theory, design, development, and application. Principal areas of study within Computer Science include artificial intelligence, computer systems and networks, security, database systems, human computer interaction, vision and graphics, numerical analysis, programming languages, software engineering, bioinformatics and theory of computing. Although knowing how to program is essential to the study of computer science, it is only one element of the field. Computer scientists design and analyze algorithms to solve programs and study the performance of computer hardware and software. The problems that computer scientists encounter range from the abstract-- determining what problems can be solved with computers and the complexity of the algorithms that solve them – to the tangible – designing applications that perform well on handheld devices, that are easy to use, and that uphold security measures. It’s a good idea to start with the basics of how computers and networks work, then find areas of study you may be further interested in. It is also recommended for anyone interested in coding to get a handle on the basics of computer science before diving into coding. If you’re thinking of entering into the computer science field, good choice! Check out why computer science jobs matter, and read on for more computer science basics.
