Book Basic and Clinical Neurocardiology

Download or read book Basic and Clinical Neurocardiology written by J. Andrew Armour and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progression of heart disease is associated with changes in the neurohumoral mechanisms that control cardiac function. The degree to which this neurohumoral remodeling occurs, even before overt signs of cardiac disease become manifest, is important for prognosis. To determine why some patients experience sudden death while others sustain life in the presence of severely compromised cardiac function, the neuronal control of cardiac electrical and mechanical events must be considered. Starting at the level of individual neurons and building upwards, this book describes the synergistic interactions that occur among intrathoracic and CNS feedback loops to permit precise control of regional cardiac behavior. On this basic science foundation, subsequent clinical chapters explore the remodeling that occurs in this system with aging, with the evolution of specific cardiac pathologies, and with the psychological concomitants of heart disease. Most importantly, these chapters provide unique insights into how specific therapies like beta-andrenergic receptor blockade not only affect cardiomyocytes directly but also mitigate the adverse neurohumoral changes that accompany disease processes, such as heart failure and essential hypertension. The paradigm advanced in this volume is that heart disease is a multifaceted phenomenon involving the interplay of neurohumoral, cardiomyocyte and structural elements, each of which depends on the other. With our cumulative understanding of these interdependent processes, new avenues for time-appropriate, targeted methods of treating heart diseases can be developed.

Book Essentials of Neurophysiology

Download or read book Essentials of Neurophysiology written by Michel J.A.M. van Putten and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we approach neurophysiology at the interface of neurology and clinical neurophysiology. The medical disciplines of the nervous system, n- rology and clinical neurophysiology, rest heavily on other sciences, notably cellular biology, neuro-anatomy, neuro-physiology, applied physics and ma- ematical biology. Existing medical textbooks on neurophysiology, neurology and clinical neurophysiology are an excellent source of the phenomenology of various principles and diseases. Here, we choose to elucidate some of the under- ing physiological, physical processes and experimental methods, intended for a broad audience – medical residents and students, as well as students in the emerging area of medical technical sciences. We feel that a good understanding of fundamentals may signi?cantly - hance insight into various aspects of clinical neurology and clinical neu- physiology. This book, therefore, is focused on a selection of clinical signs and symptoms to highlight basic principles of neurology, (neuro-)physiology and neuroanatomy. While we believe this text to be of interest to medical students or residents in neurology or clinical neurophysiology, we speci?cally aim at students - terested in contributing to new developments and innovations in neurology and clinical neurophysiology. These students are involved with patients, even though they are not trained for routine patient care.

Book Pheochromocytoma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hendrik Lehnert
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 3805576242
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Pheochromocytoma written by Hendrik Lehnert and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pheochromocytomas are rare, mostly benign tumors of the adrenal medulla whose symptoms are caused by a tumor-induced secretion of catecholamines. This book provides an overview of current knowledge on the clinical situation, diagnosis and therapy of the disease as well as an extensive discussion of novel aspects in the molecular basis of this disease such as the recognition of new tools in molecular biology. The endocrine diagnosis is based on precise knowledge of tumor metabolism of catecholamines and their metabolites and today comprises laboratory methods with a high sensitivity and specificity. As approximately one quarter of these tumors arise in the context of a familial disease, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1 or familial paragangliomas, the genetic diagnosis is becoming increasingly relevant. Equally indispensable are imaging methods such as 123I-MIBG scintigraphy or octreotide scintigraphy, which can be employed as a complementary approach in e.g. malignant tumors. The surgical therapy is clearly based on the nature of the disease; in sporadic unilateral as well as familial bilateral pheochromocytoma a lateral endoscopic approach is chosen. The treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma is mainly based on the use of nuclear medical techniques and selected chemotherapeutic approaches. This book is essential reading for clinicians and scientists in the fields of endocrinology as well as oncology, surgery and nuclear medicine.

Book Human Cardiovascular Control

Download or read book Human Cardiovascular Control written by Loring B. Rowell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new analysis of reflex and hormonal control of the human cardiovascular system developed from questions raised in Human Circulation: During Physical Stress (Rowell, 1986) and from recent findings. The goal is to help students, physiologists and clinicians understand the control of pressure, vascular volume, and blood flow by examining the cardiovascular system during orthostasis and exercise, two stresses that most affect these variables. A discussion of the passive physical properties of the vascular system provides a basis for explaining how vascular control is modified by mechanical, neural, and humoral factors. Interactive effects of the vasculature on cardiac performance are emphasized; they reveal the importance of autonomic control, supplemented by muscle pumping, in maintaining adequate ventricular filling pressure. The author's detailed analysis of how total oxygen consumption is restricted focuses on limitations in cardiac pumping ability, oxygen diffusion from lungs to blood and from blood to active muscle, oxidative metabolism and neural control of organ blood flow. An unsolved mystery is the nature of the signals that govern the cardiovascular responses to exercise. This is discussed in a new and critical synthesis of ideas and evidence concerning the "error signals" that are sensed and then corrected by activation of the autonomic nervous system during exercise.

Book Autonomic Failure

Download or read book Autonomic Failure written by Roger Bannister and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this classic text, extensively revised, is now available in paperback, priced so that all interested physicians can have their own copy. The autonomic nervous system regulates, without conscious awareness, the function of the heart and all other bodily organs. Autonomic failure can cause a variety of seemingly strange symptoms, which may present to general physicians or a wide spectrum of specialists. This book shows how these symptoms can be studied scientifically in order to reach a precise diagnosis and instigate rational treatment.

Book Marriott s Practical Electrocardiography

Download or read book Marriott s Practical Electrocardiography written by Galen S Wagner and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the strengths of Marriott's Practical Electrocardiography through its more than 50-year history has been its lucid foundation for understanding the basis for ECG interpretation. Again, in this revision, we have attempted to retain the best of the Marriott tradition--emphasis on the concepts required for everyday ECG interpretation and the simplicities, rather than complexities, of the ECG recordings. During preparation of the 9th and 10th editions, Tobin Lim coauthored many of the 11th edition chapters and served as the primary developer of the digital content associated with that edition. Tobin Lim's input continues into this 12th edition, and David Strauss has led even further into the electronic-based interactive learning experiences. More than 30 of the figures that evolved through previous editions have now been converted through the creative expertise of Mark Flanders into animated movies accessed via QR codes imbedded in the book. David has also collaborated with electrocardiographic educators who are especially skilled in e-based education to add interactive video content to many of the 12th edition chapters. Each of the now 24 chapters is divided (as indicated in the table of contents) into discrete, compact "learning units." Each learning unit begins on a new page to provide blank space for the reader's notes. The purpose of the learning units is to make this book easier to use by allowing the reader to be selective regarding the material to be considered at a particular time. Because the modern student of electrocardiography is primarily oriented to a visual perspective, we have typically begun each page with an illustration"--Provided by publisher.

Book Stress Catecholamines and Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Stress Catecholamines and Cardiovascular Disease written by David S. Goldstein and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for understanding the roles of stress and catecholamines in cardiovascular disorders is a theory defining stress. This book presents a new homeostatic theory of stress and distress and uses it to explain how systems using the endogenous catecholamines - norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine - and other effector systems maintain the internal environment during stress. The theory proposes coordinated activation of the body's several stress systems in primitively specific patterns during exposure to various stressors. Comparator homeostats interpret afferent information about specific physiological or chemical variables and regulate operations of the effector systems. Via a hierarchical mosaic of central nerve cell clusters, the brain constantly redefines homeostasis by resetting homeostats, especially during stress.
