Book excerpt: Man-machine communication is presently undergoing an important evolution which is influenced both by technological advances and by the progress made in various fields such as signal processing, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. This book emphasizes relevant aspects of man-machine dialogue by voice (acoustic-phonetic decoding, multi-speaker aspects, dialogue architectures, etc.) and presents analogies with the related fields of computer vision and natural language processing. It also introduces the fundamentals of knowledge-based and expert systems which are widely used in this field. The book is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration of international experts who worked together for an advanced course sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities and Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique. The course was held in Paris in May 1985.

Other areas of interest, such as Hyper-Text and Multimedia application, together with the classical field of Information Retrieval are also considered. FinaIly, Implementation Apects are reflected in very concrete fields. A total of of nearly 200 papers submitted from all over the world were sent to DEXA 92. Only 90 could be accepted. A Poster session has also been establishcd. DEXA 90 was held in Vienna, Austria; DEXA 91 in Berlin, Germany; and DEXA 92 will take place in Valencia, Spain, where we are celebrating the discovery of thc New World just five centurics ago, in Leonardo's age. Both the quality of the Conference and the compromise between Practice and Thcory are duc to the credit of all the DEXA 92 authors.

The series was started in 1969 to publish proceedings of important meetings on geomathematics and computer applications. The first two volumes recorded proceedings ofthe Colloquia (1969,1970) sponsored by the Kansas Geological Survey at The University ofKansas in Lawrence. The third volume was proceedings ofthe 8th International Sedimentological Congress (1971) held in Heidelberg, West Germany; the fourth was preceedings ofthe 8th Geochautauqua (1979) at Syracuse Universityin Syracuse, New York; and the fifth was selected papers from the 27th International Geological Congress (1989) held in Washington, D.C. All meetings were cosponsored by the International Association for Mathematical Geology. These special publications are important in the development of quantitative geology. Papers by a wide range of authors on a wide range of topics gives the reader a flavor for recent advances in the subject -in this volume, those advances in the use ofmicrocomputers. Nous avons été amenés à construire une telle base comme une coopération entre une base de données relationnelles d'une part, et une base de documents organisée suivant un mode hypertexte, et intégrant des connaissances grâce à un environnement expert, d'autre part. Dans ce cadre, nous proposons un modèle de gestion d'informations de types hypertexte par la base de données qui permet de mettre en oeuvre une partie de cette association. Nous définissons une information de type hypertexte comme un objet documentaire, permettant à la base de documents de manipuler une unité informative référencée par un lien. La base de documents devant intégrer des connaissances à l'intérieur de ses documents, les techniques particulières utilisées mêlent celles des systèmes experts et des systèmes hypertextes, de manière à créer un système hypertexte expert. Nous définissons un système hypertexte expert comme étant capable d'exploiter et de consulter un réseau d'informations construit à partir d'objets hypertextes classiques, auxquels sont associés des connaissances formalisées. Nous avons alors cherché à formaliser un modèle de document hypertexte expert. Cette facette expert, intégrant des connaissances aux documents hypertextes, permet d'adjoindre le dynamisme aux informations. En effet, les documents consultés peuvent évoluer en fonction de l'environnement de la base documentaire. La présence de connaissances permet d'offrir par exemple à l'utilisateur une navigation experte au sein de la base de connaissances généralisées.
