Book excerpt: Based on the premise that many, if not most, reactions in organic chemistry can be explained by variations of fundamental acid–base concepts, Organic Chemistry: An Acid–Base Approach provides a framework for understanding the subject that goes beyond mere memorization. Using several techniques to develop a relational understanding, it helps students fully grasp the essential concepts at the root of organic chemistry. This new edition was rewritten largely with the feedback of students in mind and is also based on the author’s classroom experiences using the first edition. Highlights of the Second Edition Include: Reorganized chapters that improve the presentation of material Coverage of new topics, such as green chemistry Adding photographs to the lectures to illustrate and emphasize important concepts A downloadable solutions manual The second edition of Organic Chemistry: An Acid–Base Approach constitutes a significant improvement upon a unique introductory technique to organic chemistry. The reactions and mechanisms it covers are the most fundamental concepts in organic chemistry that are applied to industry, biological chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacy. Using an illustrated conceptual approach rather than presenting sets of principles and theories to memorize, it gives students a more concrete understanding of the material.

Book Mannich Bases Chemistry and Uses

Download or read book Mannich Bases Chemistry and Uses written by Maurilio Tramontini and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-09-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the remarkable development of the chemistry and applications of Mannich bases within the last 30 years. Synthesis and reactions of Mannich bases are systematically treated in the first two chapters, which include a thorough review of the most recent advances on the topic. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to the macromolecular chemistry and the chemistry of natural compounds, two emerging areas of application of the chemistry of Mannich bases. Chapter 5 deals with structure/property relationships that enable the production of tailor-made molecular structures suited to different practical applications. A survey of the main uses of individual Mannich bases according to the type of industrial branch is also reported.

Book Acids and Bases

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian G. Cox
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-01-31
  • ISBN : 0191649341
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Acids and Bases written by Brian G. Cox and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acids and bases are ubiquitous in chemistry. Our understanding of them, however, is dominated by their behaviour in water. Transfer to non-aqueous solvents leads to profound changes in acid-base strengths and to the rates and equilibria of many processes: for example, synthetic reactions involving acids, bases and nucleophiles; isolation of pharmaceutical actives through salt formation; formation of zwitter- ions in amino acids; and chromatographic separation of substrates. This book seeks to enhance our understanding of acids and bases by reviewing and analysing their behaviour in non-aqueous solvents. The behaviour is related where possible to that in water, but correlations and contrasts between solvents are also presented. Fundamental background material is provided in the initial chapters: quantitative aspects of acid-base equilibria, including definitions and relationships between solution pH and species distribution; the influence of molecular structure on acid strengths; and acidity in aqueous solution. Solvent properties are reviewed, along with the magnitude of the interaction energies of solvent molecules with (especially) ions; the ability of solvents to participate in hydrogen bonding and to accept or donate electron pairs is seen to be crucial. Experimental methods for determining dissociation constants are described in detail. In the remaining chapters, dissociation constants of a wide range of acids in three distinct classes of solvents are discussed: protic solvents, such as alcohols, which are strong hydrogen-bond donors; basic, polar aprotic solvents, such as dimethylformamide; and low-basicity and low polarity solvents, such as acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran. Dissociation constants of individual acids vary over more than 20 orders of magnitude among the solvents, and there is a strong differentiation between the response of neutral and charged acids to solvent change. Ion-pairing and hydrogen-bonding equilibria, such as between phenol and phenoxide ions, play an increasingly important role as the solvent polarity decreases, and their influence on acid-base equilibria and salt formation is described.

Book Hard and Soft Acids and Bases Principle in Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Hard and Soft Acids and Bases Principle in Organic Chemistry written by Tse-Lok Ho and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard and Soft Acids and Bases Principle in Organic Chemistry deals with various phenomena in organic chemistry that are directly related to or derived from the hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle. Topics covered range from chemical reactivity to displacement reactions, along with various HSAB principle applications. This text consists of 11 chapters and begins with a historical overview of the HSAB concept, followed by a classification of hard and soft acids and bases and their theoretical descriptions. The reader is methodically introduced to the stability of organic compounds and complexes; displacement reactions of HSAB; and the chemistry of alkenes, aromatic, and heterocyclic compounds. The reactivity of organophosphorus and carbonyl compounds; organosulfur compounds and other chalcogenides; and organoboranes is also considered. The book concludes with an evaluation of other applications of the HSAB principle, paying particular attention to solubility and protonation; carbenes and nitrenes; the organic chemistry of group IV elements; and the reactions of organohalides, Grignard, and related agents. This book is intended for senior undergraduates or graduate chemistry majors, as well as organic chemists who are not familiar with the HSAB concept.
