Download or read book The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins written by Dr. Seuss and published by RH Childrens Books. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As topical today as when it was first published in 1938, this book tells of Bartholomew Cubbins (from Caldecott Honor winner Bartholomew and the Oobleck) and his unjust treatment at the hands of King Derwin. Each time Bartholomew attempts to obey the king’s order to take off his hat, he finds there is another hat on his head. Soon it is Bartholomew’s head that is in danger . . . of being chopped off! While The 500 Hats is one of Dr. Seuss’s earliest works, it is nevertheless totally Seussian, addressing subjects that we know the good doctor was passionate about: abuse of power (as in Yertle the Turtle), rivalry (as in The Sneetches), and of course, zany good humor!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartholomew Stovall, fatherless as an infant and orphaned at the age of ten, was born during the worst of times in English history. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds against him, he dared to do the extraordinary and embarked on a journey that not only changed his life but also reshaped the future of his family. In Bartholomew Stovall - The English Immigrant, author William Robert Stovall Sr., a descendant of Bartholomew, traces the remarkable life of this man, capturing both his hardships and conquests, while painting a portrait of life in 17th century England and America. On July 7, 1684, Bartholomew boards the Booth, a slave-hauling ship bound for Jamestown, Virginia. The transatlantic voyage is fraught with uncertainty, and its end marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Before boarding the ship, Bartholomew had signed an indenture agreement to serve four years in the New World, a decision that would prove to be life changing. In Virginia, Bartholomew serves plantation owner Richard Kennon and his infamous wife, Elizabeth Worsham Kennon, who quickly recognizes that he is a remarkable person. By the time he completes his indenture obligation a trust bond forms between master and servant. When offered a secure life working for the Kennon's he refuses and opts for land and tools, and begins the task of attaining his foreseen destiny. This compelling chronicle is based on the known facts of an English immigrant and his adventure filled journey to a new life and future. It relays a powerful message of hope, courage, and the sacrifice that must be made in order to achieve one's dreams. This is the story of Bartholomew Stovall - The English Immigrant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ORIGIN OF THE NAME BARTHOLOMEW. Bartholomew is the English form of the Syriac name of the apostle Bartholmai, which is derived from Bar, the Syriac term, as Ben is the Hebrew, for son; see Psalms ii, 12, translated "Kim the Son;" and Tholmai or Talmai (the same in Hebrew) is often found in the Old Testament, see Numbers xiii, 22; Joshua xv, 14; 2 Samuel iii, 3 and Chronicles xiii, 37, as Talmai. Its signification is "furrowed" from a Hebrew root meaning "to furrow" or "cut." The process by which Bartholmai or Bartalmai in Hebrew becomes Bartholomew in English, is through the regular Greek and Latin forms Bartholonmeos and Bartholommus, the second o being an intercalation, thence possibly through the French. The Latin ae being treated as a simple ē, as in all the other Romance languages.

Download or read book This Old Monmouth of Ours written by William S. Hornor and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hampshire County was formed from the Virginia counties of Augusta and Frederick in 1754. Later, during the American Civil War, it became the first Virginia county wholly in the territory that is now West Virginia. Mrs. Vicki Horton is the compiler of a number of Hampshire County genealogical source record collections, six of which are now available from Clearfield Company (see also items 9734, 9339, 9147, 9336, and 9335). Hampshire County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists consists of alphabetically arranged lists of all persons who paid a property tax for every year between 1800 and 1814, except for 1808, when no tax was collected. For each taxpayer Mrs. Horton has coded the number of white tithables in the household, the number of horses owned, and the number of slaves, if any. On occasion, persons are identified with supporting information, such as occupation. All the taxpayers are readily identified in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume. Since this volume contains more than 20,000 entries, it is hard to imagine a better census approximation of Hampshire County residents for this time period.
