Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Americans have shown interest in Italian Baroque art since the eighteenth century—Thomas Jefferson bought copies of works by Salvator Rosa and Guido Reni for his art gallery at Monticello, and the seventeenth-century Bolognese school was admired by painters Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley—a widespread appetite for it only took hold in the early to mid-twentieth century. Buying Baroque tells this history through the personalities involved and the culture of collecting in the United States. The distinguished contributors to this volume examine the dealers, auction houses, and commercial galleries that provided access to Baroque paintings, as well as the collectors, curators, and museum directors who acquired and shaped American perceptions about these works, including Charles Eliot Norton, John W. Ringling, A. Everett Austin Jr., and Samuel H. Kress. These essays explore aesthetic trends and influences to show why Americans developed an increasingly sophisticated taste for Baroque art between the late eighteenth century and the 1920s, and they trace the fervent peak of interest during the 1950s and 1960s. A wide-ranging, in-depth look at the collecting of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian paintings in America, this volume sheds new light on the cultural conditions that led collectors to value Baroque art and the significant effects of their efforts on America’s greatest museums and galleries. In addition to the editor, contributors include Andrea Bayer, Virginia Brilliant, Andria Derstine, Marco Grassi, Ian Kennedy, J. Patrice Marandel, Pablo Pérez d’Ors, Richard E. Spear, and Eric M. Zafran.

Book Bob Jones University Collection of Religious Art

Download or read book Bob Jones University Collection of Religious Art written by D. Stephen Pepper and published by BJU Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief overview is intended to give the sense of the historic comprehensiveness of the Italian collection, not to give a complete review of the Collection's strengths. It runs the gamut from famous masterpieces to little known figures; from metropolitan to provincial schools. Throughout this variety runs the continuity of religious themes, the highest ambition of Italian art for five centuries. The Italian collection is very likely to be the most representative in the country. - Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of South Carolina's thriving upstate Since the Cherokee Nation hunted the verdant hills in what is now known as Greenville County, South Carolina, the search for economic prosperity has defined the history of this thriving Upstate region and its expanding urban center. In a sweeping chronicle of the city and county, A. V. Huff traces Greenville's business tradition as well as its political, religious, and cultural evolution. Huff describes the area's Revolutionary War skirmishes, early settlement, and mix of diversified agriculture, small manufacturing operations, and summer resorts. Calling Greenville atypical of much of the antebellum South, the author tells of the strong Unionist sentiment, relative unimportance of slavery, and lack of staple agriculture in the region. He recounts Greenville's years of Reconstruction, textile leadership, depression, and postwar industrial diversification. In addition fo tracing Greenville's economic growth, Huff identifies the region's other hallmarks, including the fierce independence of its residents. He assesses Greenville's peaceful end to segregation, strong evangelical Protestant tradition, conservative arts programs, and influential role in South Carolina politics.

This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers together recent research from leading scholars specializing in the history of collecting. American Southern art collections, both public and private, contain rich and representative holdings of Renaissance and Baroque art which remain understudied, compared to the collections bracketing the east and west coasts of the United States. This anthology considers how these works of art were acquired for both prominent public and private collections, how they have been curated and displayed in exhibitions, and how they have also been preserved historically. Individual essays address a variety of art media representative of the early modern period in Europe and the Americas. Case studies of specific works of art, collections, and collectors address the broad geographic scope of Southern collections, inclusive of Washington, DC, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas.

Book A Guide to Dutch Art in America

Download or read book A Guide to Dutch Art in America written by Peter C. Sutton and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The need for a guidebook enabling all those interested in Dutch art to find out at a glance which paintings and drawings by particular artists or which works of applied art of various periods are to be found in the major American public collections is so obvious that it comes as a surprise to discover that none as ever been written. Until now anyone wishing to know where Dutch art from past centuries or the not-so-distant past could be seen or studied had to rely on memory or hearsay, or had to consult the countless catalogues and publications of the far flung individual museums. Since a fundamental goal of American collecting has been to educate people about all cultures, Dutch art, like the art of so many other nations, is found in virtually every city and town across the country. . . Now we have a guide that tells us where to find the art that we seek and that gives us a lively but professional analysis of the historical significance of these treasures."--Preface

Book Encyclopedia of Religion in the South

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Religion in the South written by Samuel S. Hill and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of the Encyclopedia of Religion in the South in 1984 signaled the rise in the scholarly interest in the study of Religion in the South. Religion has always been part of the cultural heritage of that region, but scholarly investigation had been sporadic. Since the original publication of the ERS, however, the South has changed significantly in that Christianity is no longer the primary religion observed. Other religions like Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism have begun to have very important voices in Southern life. This one-volume reference, the only one of its kind, takes this expansion into consideration by updating older relevant articles and by adding new ones. After more than 20 years, the only reference book in the field of the Religion in the South has been totally revised and updated. Each article has been updated and bibliography has been expanded. The ERS has also been expanded to include more than sixty new articles on Religion in the South. New articles have been added on such topics as Elvis Presley, Appalachian Music, Buddhism, Bill Clinton, Jerry Falwell, Fannie Lou Hamer, Zora Neale Hurston, Stonewall Jackson, Popular Religion, Pat Robertson, the PTL, Sports and Religion in the South, theme parks, and much more. This is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the South, religion, or cultural history.
