This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 Baron vom Stein, Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein, to give him his full name, was born in the ancestral home, a castle only by courtesy, in the little city of Nassau on the Lahn, October 26, 1757. He has left us a sketch of his life,1 which industrious biograph ers have supplemented so that we have a fairly satis factory picture of his youth and preparations for his life work. His ancestors for centuries had been nobles in the ranks of the imperial knights and for many genera tions had lived in the Lahn valley, one of the most picturesque of the side valleys of the Rhine. Here they had been the retainers and staunch defenders of the counts of Nassau, from whom William of Orange was descended, and many of the name of Stein had done good work in the service of other states within and without Germany. The ruins of their old castle stand today on the jutting rock which gave them their family name, on the hill above the city of Nassau. The crest of the hill is crowned with the ruined castle of the counts of Nassau. Both families, Nassau and Stein, had joined their cause with that of Luther. Indeed, the surviving line of the Steins was founded by a mem ber who broke his vows as a canon at Trier and mar ried in the same year that Luther did. Book The Politics of Technological Change in Prussia

Download or read book The Politics of Technological Change in Prussia written by Eric Dorn Brose and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1800s the process of industrialization contributed to painful social upheaval and wrenching political readjustments in the Kingdom of Prussia, traditionally viewed as Europe's great, modernizing, economic leader. This book illuminates the early years of this transition by examining the contradictory economic policies adopted by the state after Prussia's defeat by Napoleon. A fascinating history of modernization emerges as Eric Dorn Brose explores competing visions among soldiers, businessmen, and bureaucrats, who, largely influenced by the ideals of classical antiquity, conceived of industry in ways quite different from what it actually came to be. Brose focuses on the varying attitudes of Prussians toward their own times, the nature of the Prussian state, and the ways the state both helped and hindered early industrialization. In a highly nuanced analysis of the rivaling intrastate agencies, cultures, and political factions that shaped state policy, he accords a pivotal role to Frederick William III. Included is an investigation of the political struggle over ownership, control, and promotion of the forces of production--a crisis that was only gradually resolved at the end of the century. Book Modern Prussian History 1830 1947

Download or read book Modern Prussian History 1830 1947 written by Philip G. Dwyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of Prussia and subsequent unification of Germany under Prussia was one of the most important events in modern European history. However, the fact that this unification was brought about as a result of the Prussian military has led to many misconceptions about the nature of Prussia, and consequently of Germany, which persist to this day. This collection sets out to correct them. Beginning in 1830, and finishing with the official dissolution of Prussia by the Allies in 1947, the book takes a broad approach: chapters cover the conservatives and the monarchy, industrialisation, the transformation of the rural and urban environment, the labour movement, the tensions between Catholics and Protestants within the state, and the debate about the links between Prussian militarism and the final tragedy of Nazi Germany. By focusing on the social, religious and political tensions that helped define the course of Prussian history, the book also throws light on the development of modern German history.

Book Disobedience and Conspiracy in the German Army 1918 1945

Download or read book Disobedience and Conspiracy in the German Army 1918 1945 written by Robert B. Kane and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines, among other topics, the personal oath of loyalty that the officers of the German army swore to Adolf Hitler on August 2, 1934. It discusses how the majority of officers--those who did not become conspirators against him--complied with Hitler's orders until May 1945 despite his cruel treatment of soldiers, militarily unsound strategy and tactics, and the widespread destruction and crimes he and his forces committed. The oath taken by the officers had a strong psychological effect among a proud corps with a long history of obedience and honor. They followed Hitler to the end even though they knew they were fighting a losing battle. The author also examines why and how only a few officers, the conspirators, began to break away, lose trust in Hitler, oppose him and finally stage an assassination attempt. This history traces the development within the German army from 1918 of the philosophies of loyalty and disloyalty--and obedience and disobedience--as challenged by the Hitlerian oath of loyalty.

Book Friedrich Schleiermacher

Download or read book Friedrich Schleiermacher written by Jerry F. Dawson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationalism was a driving, moving spirit in the nineteenth-century Germany of Friedrich Schleiermacher. Jerry F. Dawson, through his thoughtful and well-wrought study of Friedrich Schleiermacher, provides an insight into contemporary nationalistic movements and the people who have a part in them. Schleiermacher, a prominent theologian and educator, was also a leading contributor to the tide of nationalism which swept Germany during the Napoleonic era. Dawson does not present Schleiermacher as an archetype for nationalists, but rather as an example of one man who was willing to sacrifice everything for the good of the nation. Examining the influence of Pietism, rationalism, and romanticism on Schleiermacher, the author explains the origins of his subject's nationalistic activities and traces the evolution of his patriotic point of view. Dawson depicts the development of Schleiermacher's patriotism from Prussian particularism to German nationalism—an allegiance to an idealized Germany unified in religion, language, folkways. He describes the diverse approaches utilized by Schleiermacher to achieve a patriotic awakening among his countrymen: "...he preached nationalistic sermons; he delivered scholarly lectures; he repeatedly risked his life on dangerous missions which would help free Germany from France; he used his journalistic talents to try to stimulate the national consciousness of the German people; and he even served in the government of Prussia in an attempt to reconstruct the educational system so that nationalism might be advanced."
