It is one of the most widely distributed bird species, breeding in North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa and wintering in South America, southern Africa, southern Asia and even northern Australia. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Robin, The Wren and The Twelve Birds of Christmas. With around 700,000 breeding pairs, the swallow is one of the most familiar birds in Britain. Though we consider the swallow to be 'our' bird, we also share this beloved creature with millions of others across the globe. Whilst we see it on a daily basis for half the year, the swallow then flies south to Africa, living on only in our memory in the long, dark winter. In The Swallow Stephen Moss documents a year of observing the swallow close to home and in the field to shed light on the secret life of this extraordinary bird. We trace the swallow's life cycle and journey, including the epic 12,000-mile round trip it takes every year, to enable it to enjoy a life of almost eternal sunshine, and the key part the swallow plays in our traditional and popular culture. With beautiful illustrations throughout, this captivating year-in-the-life biography reveals the hidden secrets of this charismatic and beautiful bird. PRAISE FOR STEPHEN MOSS: 'A superb naturalist and writer' Chris Packham 'Inspired, friendly and blessed with apparently limitless knowledge' Peter Marren 'Moss has carved out an enviable niche as a chronicler of the natural world' Daily Mail

Book Swallow

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Swallow written by Angela Turner and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as heralds of spring and beautiful, elegant flyers, swallows are among the most beloved of familiar birds. Because they return with the spring, swallows, as Angela Turner explains, have long been associated with the renewal of life, love, fidelity, and fertility, while their ability to travel incredible distances has given them associations with freedom and speed. That freedom, however, hasn’t kept them from becoming familiar figures in towns and cities. They often seem to even seek out human company—for example, barn swallows are known for nesting in our buildings and purple martins in our back yards. Destruction of their natural habitat, however, has proved dangerous to some species of swallow, and recent years have seen some populations dwindling to the point of near-extinction. Turner outlines the reasons for these declines as part of her engaging account of the natural and cultural history of this beloved bird.

Book Birding Hot Spots of Santa Fe Taos and Northern New Mexico

This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their second guide to birding in New Mexico, Judy Liddell and Barbara Hussey share their experiences and intimate knowledge of the best places to find birds in and around Santa Fe and other areas in northern New Mexico. Following the same format as their book on the Albuquerque area, the authors describe 32 sites organized by geographic regions. Along with a general description of each area, the authors list target birds; explain where and when to look for them; give driving directions; provide information about public transportation, parking, fees, restrooms, food, and lodging; and give tips on availability of water and picnic facilities and on the presence of hazards such as poison ivy, rattlesnakes, and bears. Maps and photographs provide trail diagrams and images of some of the target birds and their environments. A “helpful information” section covering weather, altitude, safety, transportation, and other local birding resources is included along with an annotated checklist of 276 bird species seen with some regularity in and around Santa Fe.

Book Bonding with the Barn Swallows

Download or read book Bonding with the Barn Swallows written by Adele Barger Wilson and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replete with captivating photos and descriptions of Barn Swallow activity, this book's 186 pages convey the discovery, excitement, and wonder of three pairs of Barn Swallows nesting at arm's length from the only outside doorway to the author's home. This true-life adventure, illustrated by 117 full-color photos, occurs over two summers in the central Appalachian Mountains of the eastern US. A pair of Barn Swallows builds a nest, successfully defends it, and raises five chicks in it, all photographically documented. The following summer, two different pairs of Barn Swallows use the same nest to raise a total of nine more chicks. Fascinating details of the nesting behavior of these birds are provided. The author painstakingly clarifies her observations in light of research on this species and on passerines in general. Many of the observations fit into the molds of typical Barn Swallow behavior, yet others present topics for future studies. There are photos showing a male swallow perching at interesting locations at night to guard his mate while she is on the nest. Also included are numerous photos of hatchlings, chicks, and soon-to-be fledglings, both alone in the nest and being fed by their parents. Aside from presenting what she has learned about the behavior of her local Barn Swallow population, the author goes to great lengths to describe the visual nature of their plumages. First-year and adult plumages are contrasted, as well as male versus female. An extra bonus is the inclusion of photos of five juvenile Barn Swallows taken just nine to ten days after fledging, showing remarkable differences between their plumage patterns. Yet the author goes one step beyond describing mere observations. She shares real-life accounts of her personal interactions with these charming birds. There is one male swallow in particular who demonstrates unusual tameness. At first bewildered and perplexed by the swallow's behavior, the author eventually ascertains the reason for his friendliness. The male swallow chatters to the author one morning while perching on the porch rail at a distance of only three feet. Nine days later, from the utility wire, he again attempts to communicate with her through his unmistakable body language. Two days later, the mystery is solved. Circumstances reveal the content of the male swallow's message to her. Throughout the course of the book, the author discerns twelve different teachings, or lessons, that Barn Swallows impart to us by their behavior. These lessons consist of principles of daily living that we humans could do well to replicate. Both adults and children can enjoy this book. Regardless of one's reading level, the photos alone are certain to provide a valuable learning experience.

Book Living on the Edge

    Book Details:
  • Author : Le Zwarts
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2016-10-18
  • ISBN : 9004278133
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Living on the Edge written by Le Zwarts and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Living on the Edge' examines the function of the Sahel region of Africa as an important wintering area for long-distance migrant birds. It describes the challenges the birds have to cope with – climate change, of course, and rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands. How have all these changes affected the birds, and have birds adapted to these changes? Can we explain the changing numbers of breeding birds in Europe by changes in the Sahel, or vice versa? Winner of the BB/BTO Best Bird Book Award 2010 The Jury commented: "It is a tremendous book in every department. It marks a step-change in our knowledge of the ecology of this critically important region in the European-African migration system and of the many species (familiar to us on their breeding grounds) that winter there. The authors combine the latest scientific information with vivid descriptions of landscapes and animals. Their book is richly illustrated with large numbers of drawings, maps and photographs by acclaimed experts. The wealth of coloured graphics has been particularly well thought out and encourages readers to delve into the figures and learn more about the region, rather than having the (all-too-common) opposite effect. Summing up, the jury praises not just the high quality of the texts, the information and the illustrations, but also the sheer pleasure of reading the book: "One of the key attributes of a good book is to be able to grip the reader's attention and transport him or her to another place. We feel confident that [Living on the edge] will have that effect."
