Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known by several names, the Barbary macaque, or Macaca sylvanus, is a unique species of primate found only in the hilly regions of North Africa. It is primarily found in Algeria's and Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Because of its distinct appearance-it lacks a tail, unlike most other macaques-the Barbary macaque is commonly mistaken for an ape. Males of these macaques tend to be larger than females, making them heavy-set animals. Their body length is between 55 and 75 cm, and they weigh between 10 and 16 kg. Women are smaller, weighing between 5 and 11 kg. Their dark brown to grayish fur, which is thick, protects them from the freezing conditions of their mountain habitats. Their face is hairless, soft pink, and expressive. It is capable of producing a range of facial expressions that are significant in their social interactions. Gregarious primates, barbary macaques usually reside in groups of one to several dozen. These troops are matriarchal, with females remaining in their natal groups for life and males moving between groups often. Their omnivorous diet consists of leaves, fruits, seeds, and insects that they find in their wooded habitat. In terms of behavior, Barbary macaques are well known for their close-knit social networks and grooming routines that promote group cohesion. They communicate using a complex system of facial expressions, vocalizations, and body language. Their sociable and smart nature makes them fascinating animals, but they may be very challenging to manage as pets. The History of Barbary Macaques as Pets For many years, Barbary macaques have been kept as pets due to their typically peaceful nature and human-like traits. In the past, affluent people and members of royalty frequently kept them as exotic pets. Because of their novelty and the prestige symbol they represented, Barbary macaques were highly prized by the Roman Empire's upper classes. More recently, Barbary macaques have been brought to Europe and other parts of the world through trade and the exotic pet industry. Their charming appearance and fascinating attitude have made them appealing to pet owners looking for interesting and intelligent companions. However, both the owners and the animals have had numerous problems as a result of this method. The transportation and capturing of Barbary macaques for the pet trade has been implicated in part in the decline of natural populations. Young macaques experience extreme stress and trauma when they are taken out of their natural habitats because it disrupts their social systems. The travel to their new homes is sometimes challenging because to high mortality rates from filthy facilities and inadequate care.

Book excerpt: The Macaca sylvanus, also referred to as the Barbary macaque, is a distinct species of primate that is indigenous to the hilly regions of North Africa. It is mostly found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria. The Barbary macaque is frequently confused for an ape due to its unique look, which includes a body lacking a tail, in contrast to most other macaques. These macaques are heavy-set animals, with males usually larger than females. They weigh between 10 and 16 kg and have a body length of 55 to 75 cm. Females weigh between 5 and 11 kg, making them smaller. Their thick fur, which varies in hue from light brown to grayish, insulates them from the chilly temperatures of their alpine environments. Their face is expressive, pale pink, and hairless. It can make a variety of facial emotions that are important in their social interactions. Barbary macaques are gregarious primates that typically live in groups of one to several dozen members. These troops are matriarchal, with males frequently migrating between groups and females staying in their natal groups for life. They graze on leaves, fruits, seeds, and insects found in their woodland habitat, making up an omnivorous diet. Behavior-wise, Barbary macaques are renowned for their close-knit social networks and grooming habits, which support the cohesiveness of the group. They use a sophisticated system of body language, facial gestures, and vocalizations to communicate. They are intriguing animals because of their gregarious and intellectual character, but they may be very difficult to keep as pets. The Background of Pet Barbary Macaques Because of their generally calm disposition and human-like tendencies, Barbary macaques have been kept as pets for several centuries. They were frequently kept as exotic companions by royalty and wealthy people in the past. The affluent class of the Roman Empire adored Barbary macaques because of their novelty and the status symbol they signified. Through trade and the exotic pet industry, Barbary macaques have more recently been introduced to Europe and other regions of the world. Pet owners searching for unusual and intellectual companions have found them alluring due to their endearing looks and captivating personality. But this approach has caused a lot of issues for the animals as well as their owners. The loss of wild populations has been attributed in part to the capture and transportation of Barbary macaques for the pet trade. When young macaques are removed from their natural environments, their social structures are upset, leading to severe stress and trauma. With high mortality rates from unsanitary facilities and insufficient care, the journey to their new homes is frequently difficult. Even for those that make it through, having a pet can be extremely difficult. It is challenging to give complex stimulation and a highly social environment to barbary macaques in a regular home. Their inability to engage in socializing, grooming, and foraging-all of which are natural behaviors-causes bodily and mental problems. Furthermore, because of their strong social ties, when they lack sufficient socialization or company, they may act out or become upset.

Book excerpt: The concept of this book arises from a symposium entitled “Human-Macaque Interactions: Traditional and Modern Perspectives on Cooperation and Conflict ” organized at the 23rd Congress of the International Primatological Society, that was held in Kyoto in September 2010. The symposium highlighted the many aspects of human-macaque relations and some of the participants were invited to contribute to this volume. The volume will include about 11 chapters by a variety of international authors and some excerpts from published literature that illustrate cultural notions of macaques. Contributions from invited authors will engage with four main perspectives – traditional views of macaques, cooperative relationships between humans and macaques, current scenarios of human-macaque conflict, and how living with and beside humans has affected macaques. Authors will address these concerns through their research findings and reviews of their work on the Asian, and the lone African, macaques.

Book The Comeback Kids Book 9 The Barbary Macaques of Gibraltar

Download or read book The Comeback Kids Book 9 The Barbary Macaques of Gibraltar written by Penelope Dyan and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barbary Macaque population in Gibraltar is doing well, but it wasn't always that way. This is why they are comeback kids! And unlike in North Africa, they are thriving! It is estimated there are three hundred monkeys in five troupes occupying the Upper Rock of Gibraltar. Their occasional trips into town sometimes result in damage to personal property, but they are protected; and no one can do anything about it. Tailless, and known locally as Barbary Apes or Rock Apes, they are really monkeys! (Locals call them monos, which means monkeys). All Gibraltar Barbary Macaques are descended from the North African populations of Barbary Macaques, and DNA evidence has established that the present population of Gibraltar macaques is of relatively recent Algerian and Moroccan origin. The presence of the monkeys is documented as being on the Rock before it was captured by the British in 1704. The original introduction of the macaques was most likely orchestrated by the Moors who occupied southern Iberia, also including Spain and Portugal, between 711 and 1492, and who kept them as pets. The popular belief is that as long as the famed Gibraltar Barbary Macaques exist on Gibraltar, the territory will remain under British rule. In 1942, during World War II, after they dwindled to a mere handful of just seven monkeys, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill ordered their numbers be restored immediately from forests in Morocco and Algeria, because of this belief. It is surmised Gibraltar is linked to Africa by a subterranean passage of 15 miles that begins at Lower St. Michael's Cave and passes under the great Strait of Gibraltar, and that this is how the Gibraltar Barbary Macaques originally migrated to the rock. After WWII they were protected and cared for by the British Military, and today they are cared for by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society. They are now comeback kids!

Download or read book Macaque Societies written by Bernard Thierry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal and human societies are multifaceted. In order to understand how they have evolved, it is necessary to investigate each of the constituent facets including individual abilities and personalities, life-history traits, mating systems, demographic dynamics, gene flows, social relationships, ecology and phylogeny. By exploring the nature and evolution of macaque social organization, this book develops our knowledge of the rise of societies and their transformation during the course of evolution. Macaques are the most comprehensively studied of all monkey groups, and the 20 known species feature a broad diversity in their social relationships, making them a particularly good group for exploring the evolution of societies. This book will be of primary interest to those studying animal behaviour and primatology, but will also be useful to those involved in the study of human societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barbary macaque (all too often mistakenly called an ape) was first brought to the attention of the Conservation Working Party of the Primate Society of Great Britain late 1979 when John Fa reported that 'surplus' animals were being sent from Gibraltar to dubious locations, such as an Italian safari park. Since there had been no scientific input into the Army's management of the monkey colony on Gibraltar, and there was concern about inbreeding, nutrition and health - about the long-term viability of the colony, it was felt that the Society could help. The Gibraltar Scientific Authority and the Army were very receptive to our offer and ideas, and this topic occupied successive chairmen over the last few years - Robin Dunbar and Richard Wrangham, myself and now Miranda Stevenson - with constant prompting and help from John Fa. Considerations soon extended to the status of the species as a whole, so that there have been three main aspects:- (1) the improved health of a larger self-sustaining population on Gibraltar, (2) the status and behavioural biology of natural populations in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), and (3) the breeding achievements in European parks and zoos, and their potential for reintroduction to suitable areas in North Africa, along with other possibilities. Robin Dunbar organized the compilation of recommendations for managing the Gibraltar colony with regard to numbers, age-sex struc ture and behavioural relationships, with some observations on diet to avoid obesity and infertility.

Book Pretending and Imagination in Animals and Children

Download or read book Pretending and Imagination in Animals and Children written by Robert W. Mitchell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-02-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that children's activities are full of pretending and imagination, but it is less appreciated that animals can also show similar activities. Originally published in 2002, this book focuses on comparing and contrasting children's and animals' pretenses and imaginative activities. In the text, overviews of research present conflicting interpretations of children's understanding of the psychology of pretense, and describe sociocultural factors which influence children's pretenses. Studies of nonhuman primates provide examples of their pretenses and other simulative activities, explore their representational and imaginative capacities and compare their skills with children. Although the psychological requirements for pretending are controversial, evidence presented in this volume suggests that great apes and even monkeys may share capacities for imagination with children, and that children's early pretenses may be less psychological than they appear.

Book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque

Download or read book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque written by Jin-Hua Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book summarizes the multi-disciplinary results of one of China’s main primatological research projects on the endemic Tibetan macaque (Macaca thibetana), which had continued for over 30 years, but which had never been reported on systematically. Dedicated to this exceptional Old World monkey, this book makes the work of Chinese primatologists on the social behavior, cooperation, culture, cognition, group dynamics, and emerging technologies in primate research accessible to the international scientific community. One of the most impressive Asian monkeys, and the largest member of its genus, the Tibetan macaque deserves to be better known. This volume goes a long way towards bringing this species into the spotlight with many excellent behavioral analyses from the field. - Frans de Waal, Professor of Psychology, Emory University, USA. Macaques matter. To understand primate patterns and trends, and to gain important insight into humanity, we need to augment and expand our engagement with the most successful and widespread primate genus aside from Homo. This volume focuses on the Tibetan macaque, a fascinating species with much to tell us about social behavior, physiology, complexity and the macaque knack for interfacing with humans. This book is doubly important for primatology in that beyond containing core information on this macaque species, it also reflects an effective integrated collaboration between Chinese scholars and a range of international colleagues—exactly the type of collaborative engagement primatology needs. This volume is a critical contribution to a global primatology. - Agustín Fuentes, Professor of Anthropology, University of Notre Dame, USA. I have many fond memories of my association with Mt. Huangshan research beginning in 1983, when together with Professor Qishan Wang we established this site. It is such a beautiful place and I miss it. It is gratifying to see how far research has progressed since we began work there, becoming more internationalized and very much a collaborative endeavor under the long-term direction of Professor Jin-Hua Li and colleagues. This book highlights the increased interest in this species, representing a variety of disciplines ranging from macro aspects of behavior, cognition and sociality, to micro aspects of microbes, parasites and disease, authored by a group of renowned Chinese and international primatologists. I applaud their efforts and expect more interesting work to come from this site in the years ahead. - Kazuo Wada, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University, Japan.
